Global Trends in Youth Employment: Key Statistics and Cultural Commentary

The issue of youth employment receives constant attention of global organizations, governments, and researchers. Young people have the potential to positively reshape the national and global economies. Furthermore, the youth also constantly reshape the social, cultural, technological, and political environments. Global unemployment rate among youth, however, is three times higher than among older workers. In 2023, one in five young people did not work, study, or acquire professional skills. The negative factors of the Ukrainian youth labor market have been significantly exacerbated by the war, which has caused an economic crisis in the country, a huge migration of young people, and growing uncertainty for the remaining youth. This article identifies global trends in the youth labor market to formulate promising directions for the transformation of Ukraine\u27s youth employment policy. The article uses analytical and statistical sources from the ILO, UN, UNESCO, UNICEF, OECD, WB, IMF, YBI, and leading international consulting organizations, as well as research by Ukrainian and global authors on current changes and contours of youth employment policy transformations

Capstone Final Report: Coal to Nuclear – Nuclear Power Solutions

This project focuses on repurposing the retired Brayton Point coal plant into a next-generation clean energy facility by integrating a small modular reactor (SMR) to power a 250 MW AI data center. The purpose is to demonstrate a sustainable and technically sound solution that addresses both the rising demand for computational power and the need to decarbonize legacy infrastructure. Our objectives include designing and validating the NuScale SMR process, ensuring reliable integration with existing site assets, maintaining strict safety and licensing standards, and achieving zero net carbon emissions. The scope of work encompasses the complete system design, site retrofit planning, power distribution analysis, and evaluation of the data center’s operational demands, paving the way for a scalable and job-generating energy transition model. Through a site analysis of Brayton Point, research into SMR technologies and AI data centers, engineering analysis, and process design, the team was able to design a Nuclear Power Plant on the decommissioned Brayton Point area that is designed to power both the grid and an AI data center. The plant is powered by the Nuscale Power Module SMR and is proven to be safe and effective through the team’s designs and NRC licensing

Navigating the Open-Loops: Actor Dynamics and Bottlenecks in the Transition towards Circular Household Waste Supply Chains

    No full text
Household waste supply chains (HWSCs) in developing countries often suffer from fragmented actor structures, weak coordination, and informal practices that limit their overall performance and circularity potential. Existing studies tend to focus on isolated aspects such as waste types, technologies, or individual actors, without systematically examining the broader network and interdependencies shaping HWSC outcomes. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the key components (e.g. actors and waste processes) and bottleneck points that hinder the structure and functioning of current HWSCs to transform into circular systems. Drawing on industrial network theory, the research analyzes how actor relationships and system configurations influence waste flows and hinder circularity outcomes. Based on forty-seven semi-structured interviews and field observations, the study maps the existing HWSC framework and identifies major bottleneck points related to role ambiguity, institutional disconnections, and limited inclusion of informal actors. Content analysis reveals that actor misalignment and lack of collaboration are central bottleneck points to effective and circular household waste systems. The findings contribute to the literature by offering a network-based perspective on HWSC and diagnosing the relational bottlenecks that hinder circular transition. The study provides a foundation for rethinking HWSC frameworks through improved coordination, actor engagement, and systemic redesign adapted to the conditions of emerging economies

Aging and the Screen: Toxic Commodification of the Female Body in The Substance (2024)

    No full text
Representations of the aging female body have increased in media, but their presence is still shaped by social norms and market-driven ideals. On the contrary, The Substance (2024), an absurd, postmodern body horror, provides us a provocative critique of contemporary society’s obsession with youth and beauty and the way our culture defines and commodifies aging, especially in relation to women’s bodies and identities. Our review of The Substance incorporates consumer culture theory with Julia Kristeva’s concept of the abject (1982), Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze (1975), and Barbara Creed’s notion of the monstrous-feminine, (1993) to explore the toxic commodification of the female body. We discuss representations of female aging bodies in the media in comparison to the body horror and self-hate in The Substance. Through examination of the visual language and the male gaze reflected in the film, we discuss the marketization and the commodification of the female body and the consumption of youth

The Consequences of Fear: How Media Literacy Teachers Adapt to Teaching in an Autocratic Regime

    No full text
While media literacy education experienced significant growth in Turkey during the early part of the decade, since the attempted coup on July 15, 2016, Turkish educators have struggled with uncertainty and social mistrust generated by the disappearance of independent journalism and the arrests of many thousands of educators, judges, and researchers. This longitudinal study of media literacy teachers in Turkey examines the professional challenges that media literacy teachers experienced between 2015 and 2020 as they adapted to increased fear and the risks associated with teaching about media. Unable to use media materials beyond the state-sanctioned textbook, teachers now evaluate the credibility and quality of news media primarily on its proximity to government power. Because teachers are agents of the state, a new form of protectionism in media literacy education is being used to reinforce ideologies in the culture that maintain the political status quo

PFAS in drinking water, wastewater and surface water in Reykjavik, Iceland

    No full text
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent contaminants with global environmental and health implications. This study evaluated PFAS concentrations in drinking water, wastewater, and surface water in Reykjavik, Iceland, focusing on seasonal variability and potential pollution sources. Thirty-three samples from groundwater, wastewater, and surface water were analysed for up to 54 PFAS. Results reveal that PFAS concentrations in Reykjavik\u27s drinking water were minimal, which most compounds below detection limits, and the sum of 18 PFAS below 0.5 ng L−1. These levels were significantly below EU Drinking Water Directive and European Food Safety Authority health limits, indicating effective source water protection. In contrast, elevated PFAS levels were detected in wastewater and surface water, with concentrations reaching 14 ng L−1 for sum 18 PFAS. The most prevalent compound was perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA). The highest contamination occurred at firefighting training sites, particularly at Reykjavik Airport, where PFAS concentrations exceeded 2000 ng L−1, dominated by PFOS. A comparison to prior results implied an about 10-fold decrease of PFOS in Reykjavik\u27s wastewater treatment plant since 2017. These findings emphasize the need for continued monitoring, and further investigation into historical and active contamination sources to safeguard environmental and public health in Iceland. Given the presence of PFAS-contaminated sites in Iceland, targeted PFAS management strategies are needed to prevent contamination of drinking water resources
