    This is a book review of How to Succeed as an Entrepreneur in Africa: A Practical Guide and Cases by Professor John Kuada and Madei Mangori. Despite what is going on about the region, the entrepreneurial success story in African environment is not at all an oxymoron. Across African continent, individuals in several countries, such as Botswana, Ghana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, have enacted entrepreneurial triumphs, and the success stories are largely untold. Kuada and Mangori now tell the story of successful entrepreneurial ventures across Africa

    The relationship of physical activity and dietary quality and diabetes prevalence in US adults: Findings from NHANES 2011-2018

    This study aimed to examine the relationship of physical activity and/or dietary quality and diabetes prevalence in the general population and within specific age groups. It was a cross-sectional study using 2011–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Patterns Equivalents data (n = 15,674). Physical activity was measured by Global Physical Activity questionnaire; dietary quality was analyzed using the Healthy Eating Index 2015; diabetes prevalence was determined by reported diagnosis and glycohemoglobin or fasting glucose. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression adjusted for demographic variables and weight status. Results revealed that although no statistically significant or non-substantial relationships were observed between dietary quality or physical activity and diabetes prevalence, respondents who did not meet physical activity recommendations regardless of dietary quality had a higher odds of diabetes prevalence than those who met physical activity recommendations and had a higher dietary quality (p \u3c 0.05). In conclusion, meeting physical activity recommendations is an important protective factor for diabetes especially in combination with a higher quality diet. A healthy lifestyle appears to have the greater impact on diabetes prevention in middle-aged men and women

    The Future is Female

    Historically, both within the United States and globally, women have not entered into science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) associated fields at the same rate as men. Several explanations have been set forth to understand this gender gap, most of them centering around women not being encouraged to go into STEM. In recent years, the percentage of women STEM workers has exponentially increased, but women still make up a minority of STEM workers. However, with women’s enrollment in college and graduate school increasing, and men’s enrollment dropping, STEM fields may start becoming predominantly women. Thus, the goal of this study was to examine whether any trends exist between gender and enrollment in STEM majors

    Multicopy Suppression of Ribosomal Protein Deletion Mutants

    To suppress the ribosome assembly defective phenotype of a ribosomal protein uS17- deficient mutant, various ribosomal proteins were used to act as multicopy suppressors. Ribosomal protein uS17 is a highly conserved component of the 30S (small) ribosomal subunit and is important for 30S subunit assembly. Mutants with a deletion of rpsQ (the gene encoding uS17) are viable but have a severe 30S subunit assembly defect and a temperature-sensitive (ts) phenotype. While fully assembled 30S subunits do form, incomplete ( 20S ) particles lacking several proteins accumulate. We hypothesized that increasing the intracellular concentration of one or more of the proteins missing from the 20S particles could drive the binding assembly process forward, thereby partially suppressing the temperature sensitive phenotype

    Cost Misperception and Voting for Public Goods

    Public good provision is often determined through referendums by voters, who weigh benefits against costs. We evaluate voter perceptions of the private costs of providing public goods by conducting three exit polls of New England voters and an online survey of California voters. By comparing cost perceptions to actual tax incidence, we find pervasive evidence that voters misperceive costs. Fewer than 20% of voters in our samples reported perceived costs within 25% of true costs. Further, our analysis suggests that actual costs have no statistical bearing on voter choice, but at least in the New England sample voter approval is affected by perceived costs. Thus, misperceptions of referendum costs can lead to voter choice errors, misallocation of public funds, and casts doubt on nonmarket valuation methods predicated on perfect information using voter behavior

    Bio-Optical Measurements in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, 1999-2000

    This document is based on 2 M.S. theses of former graduate students of Professor Emeritus James Yoder: S. A. Freeman (2001) and M. N. McFarland (2001), Section 1 and Section 2, respectively. Dr. Yoder made some edits and some deletions to both theses and also moved some of their material into Section 3, which also includes some of his own analyses and modeling. The purpose of this document is to merge closely related data and analyses into a single document and then to expand on the original conclusions with some additional calculations. The merged document thus tells a more complete story about the bio-optical measurements in Narragansett Bay that were made by Freeman and McFarland in 1999 and 2000. These were the first bio-optical measurements made in the Bay with modern equipment and may prove in the future be an important data set to help determine changes that may have occurred (be occurring). References cited were not updated from the original theses, which means that the Discussion does not compare the results with more recent studies

    Mechanical response to tension and torque of molecular chains via statistically interacting particles associated with extension, contraction, twist, and supercoiling

    A methodology for the statistical mechanical analysis of polymeric chains under tension introduced previously is extended to include torque. The response of individual bonds between monomers or of entire groups of monomers to a combination of tension and torque involves, in the framework of this method of analysis, the (thermal or mechanical) activation of a specific mix of statistically interacting particles carrying quanta of extension or contraction and quanta of twist or supercoiling. The methodology, which is elucidated in applications of increasing complexity, is capable of describing the conversion between twist chirality and plectonemic chirality in quasistatic processes. The control variables are force or extension and torque or linkage (a combination of twist and writhe). The versatility of this approach is demonstrated in two applications relevant and promising for double-stranded DNA under controlled tension and torque. One application describes conformational transformations between (native) B-DNA, (underwound) S-DNA, and (overwound) P-DNA in accord with experimental data. The other application describes how the conversion between a twisted chain and a supercoiled chain accommodates variations of linkage and excess length in a buckling transition

    Phonon decay in BaSnO3 perovskite

    Wide band-gap semiconducting oxides have strong expectations in providing the high mobility while retaining their properties at heterojunction interfaces that is critical for microelectronic device applications. Recently, measurements in bulk BaSnO3 (BSO) perovskite demonstrated significantly higher room temperature mobility with values within 100- 320 cm2/V · s range1–4. Though ionized impurity scattering is a dominant contribution that limits the mobility at high doping levels, the impact can be avoided by using effective doping techniques. That leaves the inelastic carrier phonon scattering to affect the mobility as only the polar optical (LO) phonons can mediate energy exchanges between the hot carriers and the lattice. In this case, the mobility values can be as high as 500 cm2/V · s for electron concentrations \u3e1 x 1019cm-3. 5Knowledge of mechanisms for polar phonon interactions and phonon decay routes at different temperatures in the system where screening of ionic potential is relatively weak is essential. From the fundamental point of view, lattice vibrations (LO- and TO- phonons) and their characteristics is key in quantifying and modeling the oxide material’s complex dielectric function6,7. The phonon-damping rate (G) is more important and critical parameter than the vibration frequency (W). The damping rate relates straightforwardly to homogeneous linewidth Dn [cm-1] = G/2pc for Raman resonances that are usually studied using traditional(spontaneous) Raman scattering spectroscopy techniques. Transparent oxides have been a subject of a few theoretical and experimental studies. In particular, cubic lattice BSO has been modeled using density functional theory (DFT) to predict lattice parameters, band structure, carrier scattering rates, vibrational spectra, and dielectric function5,7–9. With regard to the experimental studies, some of the earlier optical measurements indicated a presence of strong Raman active modes2,9–11
