Kerri Besse made the point that there is more to a career than climbing the corporate ladder. Besse is a 2003 graduate of URI’s Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Department with a minor in Art. After graduating, Besse began her career working in high-end fashion. After returning to school to learn about textiles and surface design, Besse developed an interest in the weaving and rug industries. Today, she is self-employed and does freelance work for multiple interior textile companies. She noted that the pandemic has caused longer lead times and higher prices. Communicating virtually has become normalized. New innovations are helping the industry to adapt to the virtual business environment

TEACHER PERCEPTIONS OF CRITICAL MEDIA LITERACY

Critical media literacy (CML) is vital for students to navigate the current proliferation of misinformation and disinformation. Despite what is known about the influence of teacher beliefs on classroom practice, little research to date has looked at what teachers perceive about the importance of CML. The researchers administered a survey to teachers throughout the U.S. (N = 362) on their perceptions of the importance of teaching CML as part of their instruction. Using quantitative methods, the researchers found CML as the primary factor underlying the survey data and a strong awareness of the importance of teaching CML to students. While years of teaching experience, subject areas, being a primary, elementary, or middle school teacher, geographic area, and being politically conservative or progressive were not significant predictors of CML factor scores, three covariates showed significant differences—gender, educational level, and being a high school teacher. Implications for teacher education programs and professional learning initiatives and other suggestions for improvement are included in the discussion

Recycling of Pretreated Polyolefin-Based Ocean-Bound Plastic Waste by Incorporating Clay and Rubber

Plastic waste found in oceans has become a major concern because of its impact on marine organisms and human health. There is significant global interest in recycling these materials, but their reclamation, sorting, cleaning, and reprocessing, along with the degradation that occurs in the natural environment, all make it difficult to achieve high quality recycled resins from ocean plastic waste. To mitigate these limitations, various additives including clay and rubber were explored. In this study, we compounded different types of ocean-bound (o-HDPE and o-PP) and virgin polymers (v-LDPE and v-PS) with various additives including a functionalized clay, styrene-multi-block-copolymer (SMB), and ethylene-propylene-based rubber (EPR). Physical observation showed that all blends containing PS were brittle due to the weak interfaces between the polyolefin regions and the PS domains within the polymer blend matrix. Blends containing clay showed rough surfaces and brittleness because of the non-uniform distribution of clay particles in the polymer matrix. To evaluate the properties and compatibility of the blends, characterizations using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) rheology were carried out. The polymer blend (v-LDPE, o-HDPE, o-PP) containing EPR showed improved elasticity. Incorporating additives such as rubber could improve the mechanical properties of polymer blends for recycling purposes

The Waning Influence of the Pandemic on Decision Making

The notion that the present value of cash flows is often improperly estimated in financial models concerning capital improvements and abandonments is a fundamental problem in decision analysis in management and associated decisions and affects the estimation of and valuation of intellectual property. Previous studies indicate the usefulness of estimation theory in financial accounting. During the Covid Pandemic of the past few years, decisions by governmental and health authorities in the United States and the World were often dictated during the Pandemic by short-term political influences which included disinformation by some who wished to take advantage of the misuse of the health Pandemic for political gain and/or financial power and short-term financial gain. Previously this was shown to be true as the media with the aid of self promotional activities by many who were attempting this kind of gain. Furthermore, the Pandemic in the United States and other nations is receding in dramatic ways and many restrictions of the Endemic era are no longer in use. This was the result of Mask restrictions and increasing but not universal vaccine programs in many states and nations
