Cognitive diagnosis of media and digital literacy knowledge schema in Mexican high school students

This research explored the mental representation of media and digital literacy (MDL) in 242 Mexican high school students through a definitional task based on the natural semantic networks technique. The participants defined ten target concepts related to MDL, using verbs, nouns, and adjectives as definers, and then they rated each definer with a scale from 1 to 10. The smaller the number, the lower the quality of the definer to conceptualize the target, while the higher the rating, the higher the quality of the definer to define it. The participants showed a beginner level in MDL despite their daily navigation through the media space and using some digital devices. These results suggest that simple exposure to information and media technologies does not guarantee the knowledge necessary to use them appropriately and with critical thinking, which points out the need to promote MDL programs in this population, which will empower students to use media and digital tools, with repercussions awareness that its use entails in their academic and social environment

The Politics of Safety: The Black Freedom Struggle

    No full text
Dr. King discusses Black resistance to racial violence outside the South from the Great Depression to the 1990s through the lens of what he calls the “politics of safety.” Building on some of the stories in his new book, The Politics of Safety: The Black Struggle for Police Accountability in La Guardia’s New York, he suggests alternative ways to understand and teach African American history and Black social movements in the United States. King is an Associate Professor of History at Fairfield University. His research focuses on the Black freedom struggle outside the South, particularly New York City during the first half of the twentieth century. His work has appeared in the Journal of African American History (forthcoming), Journal of Urban History, and Reviews in American History; and he has essays in Understanding and Teaching the Civil Rights Movement, The Strange Careers of the Jim Crow North, and Escape from New York

Attentive Listening and Confirmation Key Aspects in Health Promotion Encounters With Patients in Telephone Counselling

Introduction: Health-promoting telephone counselling is a growing but underexplored area of nursing, where district nurses (telenurses) play a key role in supporting patients\u27 health and autonomy without physical presence. While this form of care is widespread, time constraints, emotional strain, and system limitations may challenge telenurses\u27 ability to create meaningful, person-centred encounters. Gaining insight into how telenurses experience health-promoting interactions is essential for improving care quality and support systems. This study contributes new knowledge by exploring the lived experiences of telenurses in such encounters, offering perspectives that can inform education, policy, and practice development. Aim: The study aim was to describe health-promoting encounters with patients in telephone counselling as experienced by telenurses. Methods: A qualitative, phenomenological interview study, grounded in a Reflective Lifeworld Research approach, was conducted with 12 participants in western Sweden. Findings: The findings comprise one key essence with three constituents. The essence of the phenomenon of health-promoting encounters with patients in telephone counselling as experienced by telenurses involves a moment of confirmation and the creation of a sense of security for the patient. The phenomenon is further described with all its variations and nuances through its three constituents: creation of mutual understanding and meaningfulness, attentiveness to patients in their context, and a calm conversation without stress. Conclusion: The results in this study reveal that telenurses have an intention to create mutual understanding and a sense of security to achieve meaningfulness in the encounter with patients. Confirming the patient through attentive listening and being present in the encounter facilitates a holistic perspective based on the patient as a whole, which is in accordance with a person-centred approach. The results in this study contribute to knowledge in the area of health-promoting encounters with patients in telephone counselling, a topic with limited research
