Mechanisms of Cannabidiol (CBD) in Cancer Treatment: A Review

    Get PDF
Cannabis sativa L. (Cannabis) and its bioactive compounds, including cannabinoids and non-cannabinoids, have been extensively studied for their biological effects in recent decades. Cannabidiol (CBD), a major non-intoxicating cannabinoid in Cannabis, has emerged as a promising intervention for cancer research. The purpose of this review is to provide insights into the relationship between CBD and cancer based on recent research findings. The anticancer effects of CBD are mainly mediated via its interaction with the endocannabinoid system, resulting in the alleviation of pain and the promotion of immune regulation. Published reviews have focused on the applications of CBD in cancer pain management and the possible toxicological effects of its excessive consumption. In this review, we aim to summarize the mechanisms of action underlying the anticancer activities of CBD against several common cancers. Studies on the efficacy and mechanisms of CBD on cancer prevention and intervention in experimental models (i.e., cell culture- and animal-based assays) and human clinical studies are included in this review

    Supply Chain

Supply chain issues have plagued the textile and apparel industry throughout the pandemic due to worker shortages, crowded ports, and cargo ships getting stuck. Some decisions go beyond concerns about the pandemic; specifically, deciding which model to use for which product. Functional products with stable predictability may be transported from offshore production facilities via container ship while innovative products are worth higher transportation costs to assure on-time delivery. Teresa McCarthy explained many aspects of the supply chain as they affect fashion retail in her presentation with special attention to Zara

The Influence of Pre-College Behaviors and Parenting Practices on Alcohol Misuse, Sexual Risk-Taking, and Adverse Outcomes Among First-Year College Women

Objective: Although numerous reports document college students’ risk-taking behaviors, few examine these behaviors in a developmental context. The purpose of this study was to examine female freshmen college students’ pre-college experiences and parenting influences on first semester experiences with alcohol misuse, sexual risk-taking, and adverse outcomes, including violence. Methods: We surveyed 229 female freshman residential college students at the end of their first semester in college. Results: Participants who drank frequently in high school were more likely to binge drink in college and regret doing something while drinking. Mother-daughter closeness and parental discussions of sexual risks, personal safety and danger avoidance were associated with a reduced likelihood of regretting doing something while drinking, experiencing sexual violence, and having sex without a condom. Parental provision of alcohol was associated with alcohol misuse. Conclusion: These findings provide a life course perspective on the development of risk behaviors and adverse outcomes during emerging adulthood

Modification of lithium electrodeposition behavior by variation of electrode distance

Developing a better understanding and control over the lithium electrodeposition behavior will assist with the commercial application of lithium metal anodes for rechargeable batteries. Despite intensive research over the past decade, our understanding of the deposition of lithium is limited. Here a new observation on the effect of distance between the working electrode and the counter electrode for electrochemical lithium deposition behavior is reported. From this fundamental investigation of distance, the high lithium ion concentration regions formed by release of lithium ions from the counter electrode modify the lithium deposition behavior on the working electrode, resulting in the generation of non-uniform lithium dendrites with a thick diversely composed surface film. Alternatively, increasing the distance between the electrodes results in the deposition of a spherical lithium morphology with a thin LiF rich surface film. This fundamental study provides a deeper understanding of correlation between lithium deposition behavior and electrode separation and provides insight to inhibit lithium dendrite formation

Minding Braess Paradox amid third-party logistics hub capacity expansion triggered by demand surge

    No full text
Third-party logistics (3PL) in the U.S. has been declared essential by the government and 3PL firms are tasked to continue their operations amid the pandemic. Meanwhile, demand for e-commerce deliveries have exploded due to strict enforcement of lockdowns and the public\u27s preference to avoid physical contacts. To process the record increase in volume, 3PL firms have expanded capacities of their consolidation hubs. However, expansion in a hub capacity might risk delay propagation through the hub\u27s conveyer systems and lead to a counterintuitive phenomenon known as Braess Paradox (BP). We present two layouts (Two-Way Secondary Sort and Direct Sorting) that are commonly employed in the 3PL hubs to accommodate high volumes. We then extend by differentiating 3PL\u27s traffic into Regular and Express packages and include penalty cost in the model. The results show that the BP may occur in 3PL hub settings. However, both layouts are impacted differently. We compare the performances of the two sorting layouts and present value ranges where the benefits of one layout might outweigh the other in hub operations. We also expand the two-tier model by adding an extra tier of package type (i.e., Critical Package) and provide findings that are more generic to any multiple-tier model. Our findings help in identifying the conditions that 3PLs can avoid BP and improve their hub performances with suitable configurations of flow layout
