    A Poetry Reading by Kwame Dawes

    Kwame Dawes is the author of twenty books of poetry and numerous other books of fiction, criticism, and essays. Currently, he teaches at the University of Nebraska and the Pacific MFA Program and acts as Glenna Luschei Editor for Prairie Schooner magazine. Throughout his long career, Dawes has received many accolades including the Forward Poetry Prize: Best First Collection in 1994, the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize in Poetry in 2019, and an Emmy for New Approaches to News & Documentary Programming: Arts, Lifestyle & Culture in 2009. Most recently, Dawes was named Literary Person of the Year by Brittle Paper, an honor that recognizes artists’ contributions to the advancement of the African literary industry and culture. Dawes latest collection, City of Bones: A Testament, is the author’s twentieth collection and brings together lyrical, narrative, and elegiac poems that consider the existence of a historical African soul that resides within present day African-American and Caribbean sensibility.     The role of school-home communication in supporting the development of children’s and adolescents’ digital skills, and the changes brought by COVID-19

    School-home communication is a growing research field in social sciences, particularly in education sciences and communication studies. While previous studies have paid much attention to the importance of school-home interaction in supporting primary academic socialisation and progress of elementary school pupils, the role of teacher-parent communication and collaboration in influencing the development of children’s and adolescents’ digital skills remains an under-researched area. This paper employed thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with education experts in six European countries, providing an insight into their opinions and views on the problems in communication between homes and schools. The analysis identified main problems in and obstacles to school-home collaboration on children’s digital skills development, and the changes the COVID-19 pandemic brought along in this field of education. The paper provides five policy recommendations for enhancing school-home collaboration on digital skills development

    Lying by telling the truth – the risks of deception by paltering and hypocrisy in corporate social responsibilities context

    This research investigated how fashion corporations’ paltering-based deceptive marketing, specifically related to corporate social responsibility (CSR), might influence consumers. Specifically, it investigated if it evokes hypocrisy perceptions to influence consumers’ purchase decisions and how the mediating roles of consumer-corporation-relationship and consumer-based corporate-reputation can explain such influences. Using a two-factor online experiment (paltering x message replications), data were collected from 252 US consumers. PROCESS results indicated that CSR-paltering positively evoked hypocrisy and, in turn, dampened consumer-corporation-relationship and corporate-reputation. Such hypocrisy significantly reduced purchase-intentions, but only when mediated through consumer-corporation-relationship. No significant negative relationships between deception and purchase-intentions were observed when mediated by hypocrisy alone or combined with corporate-reputation. Additionally, paltering directly influenced relational and reputational evaluations. The novelty of this research lies in its focus on paltering-based deception, prevalent within the fashion industry, and how technically true yet misleading CSR marketing influences consumers. This study also responds to the urgent scholarly calls for investigating deception’s role in consumers’ hypocrisy and adds how this new type of deception is also an attributing factor. Further, it provides corporations insight into how CSR paltering, despite its technically true information, can damage consumers’ relational and reputational attachments and their behavioral intentions if discovered

    Price Analysis of Aquafeed Containing Microalgae (Dunaliella salina (Dunal) Teodoresco 1905 Meal for Color Enhancement in Shrimp

    The price of aqua feed containing Dunaliella salina meal was calculated. Also, the formulated feed’s protein, lipid, and total carotenoid content were examined. The price of shrimp feed containing D. salina meal was higher than commercial feed with better protein and carotenoid content in the feed. This indicated that the inclusion of microalgae meal may increase coloration and growth in shrimp. We recommend using these formulated fish in shrimp aquaculture with necessary investment in microalgae meal and aqua feed production

    Electric Vehicle User Behavior: An Analysis of Charging Station Utilization in Canada

    For a user-centered deployment of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) infrastructure, it is vital to understand electric vehicle user charging behavior. This study identifies user behavioral patterns by analyzing data from more than 7000 charging stations in Canada, comparing residential vs. public Level 2, and public direct current fast (DCFC) vs. public Level 2 charging. A novel algorithm, CHAODA, was applied to identify differences between DCFC and other Level 2 charging options. Through a multivariate and holistic methodology, various patterns emerge, identifying differences in the utilization and seasonality of different EVSE types. The study provides evidence of an “EV Duck Curve” that amplifies the baseline of the power production “Duck Curve,” confirming future challenges for grid stability. Implementations of this study can support future EVSE infrastructure planning efforts and help improve the overall service of electric vehicle supply equipment and grid stability

    ReclaimingSTEM: A healing-centered counterspace model for inclusive science communication and policy training

    The dominant U.S. cultural norms shape science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and in turn, these norms shape science communication, further perpetuating oppressive systems. Despite being a core scientific skill, science communication research and practice lack inclusive training spaces that center marginalized identities. We address this need with a healing-centered counterspace grounded in the key principles of inclusive science communication: ReclaimingSTEM. ReclaimingSTEM is a science communication and science policy training space that centers the experiences, needs, and wants of people from marginalized communities. ReclaimingSTEM problematizes and expands the definitions of “what counts” as science communication. We organize ReclaimingSTEM with intentionality, emphasizing inclusion at every part of the process. Since initiating in 2018, five ReclaimingSTEM workshops have been held in multiple locations, both in-person and virtually, reaching more than 700 participants from all over the globe. In this paper, we share our model for ReclaimingSTEM, reflections of workshop participants and speakers, barriers faced during organizing, and recommendations for creating truly inclusive practices in science communication spaces

    Exploring the performance of Biological Invasions in social media five years after opening its Facebook and Twitter accounts

    Social media can help scientific journals to disseminate and increase the social and scientific reach and impact of their publications. With this goal, the journal Biological Invasions has been active on Facebook and Twitter since 2017. Here, we assess for the first time the performance of Biological Invasions’ Facebook and Twitter accounts. Twitter is the most widely used channel by scientists. Accordingly, scientists were the main followers of Biological Invasions’ Twitter account. The number and geographical diversity of followers and the number of times Biological Invasions was mentioned in social networks were much higher on Twitter than on Facebook. However, Biological Invasions’ Facebook account reaches users from different geographical areas than its Twitter account does (i.e., most followers of Biological Invasions’ Facebook account were located in Europe and South America, while most followers on Twitter were located in Europe and North America). Certain geographical areas (e.g., Africa, Asia, and Central America) were poorly represented among social media followers on both accounts. Social media activities did not affect the number of reads or citations of Biological Invasions’ scientific publications. However, being active on social media is likely to increase the social and scientific impact of the journal and to improve diversity and inclusivity of its scientific publications. We hope that future efforts directed towards increasing the performance of Biological Invasions in social media will help us achieve these goals

    Response of macrophyte litter decomposition in global blue carbon ecosystems to climate change

    Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) are important nature-based solutions for climate change-mitigation. However, current debates question the reliability and contribution of BCEs under future climatic-scenarios. The answer to this question depends on ecosystem processes driving carbon-sequestration and -storage, such as primary production and decomposition, and their future rates. We performed a global meta-analysis on litter decomposition rate constants (k) in BCEs and predicted changes in carbon release from 309 studies. The relationships between k and climatic factors were examined by extracting remote-sensing data on air temperature, sea-surface temperature, and precipitation aligning to the decomposition time of each experiment. We constructed global numerical models of litter decomposition to forecast k and carbon release under different scenarios. The current k averages at 27 ± 3 × 10−2 day−1 for macroalgae were higher than for seagrasses (1.7 ± 0.2 × 10−2 day−1), mangroves (1.6 ± 0.1 × 10−2 day−1) and tidal marshes (5.9 ± 0.5 × 10−3 day−1). Macrophyte k increased with both air temperature and precipitation in intertidal BCEs and with sea surface temperature for subtidal seagrasses. Above a temperature threshold for vascular plant litter at ~25°C and ~20°C for macroalgae, k drastically increased with increasing temperature. However, the direct effect of high temperatures on k are obscured by other factors in field experiments compared with laboratory experiments. We defined “fundamental” and “realized” temperature response to explain this effect. Based on relationships for realized temperature response, we predict that proportions of decomposed litter will increase by 0.9%–5% and 4.7%–28.8% by 2100 under low- (2°C) and high-warming conditions (4°C) compared to 2020, respectively. Net litter carbon sinks in BCEs will increase due to higher increase in litter C production than in decomposition by 2100 compared to 2020 under RCP 8.5. We highlight that BCEs will play an increasingly important role in future climate change-mitigation. Our findings can be leveraged for blue carbon accounting under future climate change scenarios

    Beyond employment: Lower-income participants’ experiences in a healthcare training program for medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, and certified nursing assistants

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of participant experiences in a healthcare training program for medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, and certified nursing assistants in areas beyond employment procurement or retention. During the year 2020, employment rates decreased and the cost of living increased. Those changes ultimately put lower-income populations at risk for not meeting the basic needs of life, as it became increasingly more difficult to obtain an adequately paying job. Healthcare training programs for lower income individuals allow for participants to gain the appropriate knowledge and experience required for working in the healthcare industry while also providing them necessary skills and confidence for securing and maintaining employment. While the primary objective of the Genesis Center Healthcare Training Program was to increase employment rates, this study found the program substantially contributed to participant’s lives in many ways that will contribute to their overall life satisfaction, financial well-being, and mental wellness for many years. Method: This current research adds to existing literature by utilizing a mixed methods sequential exploratory strategy that analyzes quantitative survey data (n=51) and qualitative data from phone interviews with program participants (n=19). Results: Findings from this study provide evidence that healthcare training programs for lower income populations may improve participant lives by increasing financial well-being and financial capability. Participants also reported enhanced opportunities, increased motivation, and improved mental health following participation. Conclusion: Employment programs for future allied health professionals targeting lower income populations should ensure that financial coaching and additional supports are included in their protocols. Future research on these types of training programs should include pre/post measures and ideally experimental design procedures using standardized measures for life satisfaction, financial well-being, and mental health
