    Antibacterial Efficacy of Myrtus communis Nanoemulsion Against Multidrug-Resistant, ESBL-Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Its Association with β-Lactam Resistance Profiles

    General Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major opportunistic pathogen responsible for severe hospital-acquired infections and is increasingly associated with multidrug resistance mediated by extended-spectrum and metallo-β-lactamases. Specific Background: The rapid dissemination of ESBL- and MBL-producing P. aeruginosa has compromised the efficacy of third-generation cephalosporins and carbapenems, creating an urgent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies. Knowledge Gap: Evidence remains limited regarding the effectiveness of phytochemical nanoemulsions against genetically characterized MDR P. aeruginosa isolates. Aims: This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of a Myrtus communis essential oil nanoemulsion against clinical ESBL-producing P. aeruginosa and examined its association with β-lactam resistance profiles. Results: Among 350 clinical samples, 40 P. aeruginosa isolates showed high resistance to cephalosporins and carbapenems, with prevalent VIM, IMP, CTX-M, and SHV genes. The formulated nanoemulsion exhibited a mean droplet size of 96.15 nm and demonstrated strong antibacterial activity, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.07 mg/µL and a minimum bactericidal concentration of 0.2 mg/µL, effectively inhibiting most MDR isolates. Novelty: This study integrates molecular resistance profiling with nanoemulsion-based phytotherapy against MDR P. aeruginosa. Implications: Myrtle nanoemulsion represents a promising adjunct or alternative antimicrobial approach for managing life-threatening MDR infections, particularly in settings with limited therapeutic options.Highlight : ESBL and MBL genes were highly prevalent in multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa.     The Importance of Endolymphatic Administration of Drugs In The Treatment of Persistent Postoperative Peritoniti

    Persistent postoperative peritonitis remains a major challenge in abdominal surgery due to high rates of septic complications, antimicrobial resistance, and insufficient drug concentrations at the site of inflammation, making optimization of regional drug delivery clinically relevant. This study aims to evaluate the clinical and immunological effectiveness of endolymphatic drug administration in the comprehensive treatment of appendicular peritonitis. A retrospective and comparative clinical study was conducted on 66 patients with appendicular peritonitis treated in surgical departments of Tashkent city clinics, divided into a main group receiving endolymphatic therapy and a control group managed with conventional treatment. Clinical severity scores, biochemical parameters, intoxication indices, and immunological markers were analyzed using non-parametric statistical methods. The results demonstrate that endolymphatic drug administration achieved higher local therapeutic concentrations, significantly improved lymphocyte subpopulations, enhanced humoral immunity indicators, reduced endogenous intoxication, and accelerated recovery compared with standard therapy. Unlike prior studies that focused primarily on systemic antibiotic regimens, this research provides empirical evidence on the immunomodulatory and detoxifying advantages of targeted endolymphatic therapy in postoperative peritonitis. These findings contribute to the theoretical understanding of lymphatic system involvement in inflammatory control and support practical and policy-oriented implications for integrating endolymphatic drug administration into surgical infection management protocols to reduce complications and improve patient outcomes.Keywords : Endolymphatic antibiotic therapy, appendicular peritonitis, immunomodulation, lymphatic drug delivery, surgical sepsis prevention, postoperative complicationsHighlight : Endolymphatic therapy increases total T-lymphocytes 1.41-fold and improves immunoglobulin levels significantly.     Exploiting Klebsiella pneumoniae Arginine Deiminase: Purification, Characterization, and Selective Anticancer Activity

    General Background: Arginine deiminase (ADI) represents a promising therapeutic enzyme for treating arginine-auxotrophic cancers by catalyzing L-arginine conversion to citrulline and ammonia, exploiting the metabolic vulnerability of cancer cells deficient in arginosuccinate synthetase (ASS). Specific Background: Colorectal cancer, ranking second in mortality and third in global incidence, demonstrates heterogeneous arginine metabolism with certain tumor subtypes exhibiting impaired ASS expression, rendering them susceptible to arginine deprivation therapy. Knowledge Gap: Despite ADI's therapeutic potential, comprehensive characterization of Klebsiella pneumoniae-derived ADI and its selective cytotoxicity against colorectal cancer remains insufficiently explored. Aims: This study isolated, purified, and characterized ADI from clinically isolated K. pneumoniae strains and evaluated its selective anticancer activity against HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells versus NCM460 normal colon cells. Results: Isolate No. 5 demonstrated optimal ADI production (12 U/mg), achieving 11-fold purification through three-step chromatographic procedures yielding 32.9 U/mg specific activity with 40.9% recovery; optimal enzymatic performance occurred at pH 7 and 37°C, with Mn²⁺ and Fe³⁺ enhancing activity (120% and 105% respectively) while EDTA inhibited it (73%), confirming metalloenzyme properties; cytotoxicity assays revealed selective anticancer activity with IC₅₀ values of 390 µg/mL against HCT-116 cells and >800 µg/mL against NCM460 cells, demonstrating 2.3-fold selectivity. Novelty: This investigation provides the first comprehensive biochemical characterization of K. pneumoniae-derived ADI with demonstrated selective cytotoxicity parameters specifically targeting colorectal cancer.     General Background: In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, critical reading is a core competency for developing higher-order thinking, yet many classrooms, particularly in East Kalimantan, still rely on outdated, passive methods. Specific Background: While multimedia and interactive tools offer potential for enhancing engagement, their integration into EFL critical reading remains inconsistent and often misaligned with learning goals. Knowledge Gap: Limited empirical studies apply the Triple E Framework—Engage, Enhance, Extend—in under-resourced, culturally diverse, and large EFL classrooms to specifically foster critical reading skills. Aims: This study investigates how multimedia and interactive tools, guided by the Triple E Framework, influence engagement, comprehension, and motivation in EFL critical reading. Results: Using a mixed-methods approach with 32 students, findings show that over half of the observed lecturers achieved an “exceptional connection” between learning goals and technology use, leading to improved focus, comprehension, and extended learning beyond class. Novelty: This research offers empirical validation of the Triple E Framework in large, diverse EFL contexts, linking teacher digital literacy to effective critical reading instruction.     Inclusive education serves as a cornerstone in promoting equitable learning opportunities for all, especially for Children with Special Needs (ABK). In Gresik Regency, the implementation of Regent Regulation No. 42/2013 reflects a local commitment to this ideal. However, despite formal policies, significant challenges persist. A lack of teacher training, inadequate infrastructure, and entrenched social stigma continue to obstruct meaningful inclusion. Existing studies have yet to comprehensively explore the interplay between these constraints and the policy’s intended outcomes, exposing a critical knowledge gap. This study aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities inherent in implementing inclusive education in Gresik and evaluate the effectiveness of support programs. Using a qualitative literature review approach, the findings reveal that while barriers are significant, notable opportunities exist through the empowerment of Special Guidance Teachers (GPK), enhanced training, strong policy backing, and multisectoral collaboration. The novelty lies in the synthesis of policy analysis with community and educational dynamics to propose an integrated strategic framework. The implications underscore the necessity of strengthening educator capacity, infrastructure, and social attitudes to achieve inclusive education goals—providing a foundation for developing future policies and localized best practices.     General Background: Corporate financial performance is intricately linked with governance structures and financial strategies. Specific Background: In Indonesia’s mining sector, understanding how Good Corporate Governance (GCG) and Leverage influence performance through risk management remains underexplored. Knowledge Gap: Prior studies lack clarity on whether GCG and Leverage directly or indirectly impact financial outcomes via risk mitigation. Aim: This study investigates the effects of GCG components (institutional ownership, independent board of commissioners, audit committee) and Leverage (debt-to-equity ratio) on Return on Assets (ROA), incorporating risk management as an intermediary variable. Results: Utilizing SPSS 25 for descriptive analysis, classical assumption tests, and path analysis across 27 IDX-listed mining companies from 2019–2023, the results show that no independent variable significantly affects ROA collectively. However, the independent board of commissioners significantly influences risk management, which itself has no subsequent impact on financial performance. Novelty: This study highlights the limited mediating role of risk management, challenging assumptions about its integrative influence on financial outcomes. Implications: The findings enrich corporate finance theory and suggest organizations must realign risk governance frameworks to enhance budget execution and capitalize on strategic opportunities. Specific Background: In the context of SMPN 1 Gedangan and SMPN 1 Porong, the role of principals as digital leaders remains underexplored, particularly in influencing teacher performance.Knowledge Gap: Prior studies often overlook the qualitative implications of digital leadership in middle schools with evolving technological infrastructure. Aims: This study investigates the impact of school principals' digital leadership—including digitized systems, innovation programs, and collaboration—on enhancing teacher performance. Methods: Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews and observations, analyzed descriptively, and validated via Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and data triangulation. Results: Findings reveal that digital leadership significantly improves teacher capabilities, as evidenced by improvements in PMM E-performance reports, attendance tracking, training participation, digital program initiatives, and principal supervision.     General Background: Long-span buildings are essential in accommodating wide, unobstructed interior spaces, commonly applied in structures such as stadiums and assembly halls. Specific Background: One effective structural system for such buildings is the space truss with barrel vault configurations, known for their strength and spatial efficiency. Knowledge Gap: However, limited comparative studies exist on the seismic performance and material efficiency of various barrel vault space truss models. Aims: This study aims to analyze and optimize seven barrel vault space truss models spanning 192 m by 120 m with a height of 50 m, focusing on earthquake load response and structural tonnage. Results: The analysis reveals that model 1 has the lowest base shear (V = 3142.50 kN) and structural tonnage, while model 6 exhibits the highest tonnage—62.24% heavier than model 1—and base shear of 4881.18 kN. Novelty: The study provides a comparative seismic performance assessment of large-span space truss models under identical geometric and loading conditions. In contrast, green synthesis utilizing plant extracts offers a sustainable alternative. Knowledge gap: Despite growing interest, a comprehensive understanding of how different plant species and zinc salts affect ZnO NP morphology and functionality remains limited. Aims: This review aims to consolidate recent studies on the green synthesis of ZnO NPs using diverse plant extracts and zinc precursors, focusing on synthesis parameters and resulting nanoparticle characteristics.
