Childhood, Identity Politics, and Linguistic Negotiation in the Traditional Chinese Translation of the Picture Book The Gruffalo in Taiwan
Get PDFIn contemporary Taiwan, the identity politics of childhood are interlaced with changing educational policies that follow a winding course through the Chinese cultural legacy, local Taiwanese values, and Western cultures. One important way in which Western values influence children's construction of Taiwanese identity is through the translation of texts from English. The Chinese translation of the award-winning UK picture book The Gruffalo is typical of current practices of translation in Taiwan: it demonstrates the attempts to incorporate, fuse, and negotiate heterogeneous Chinese, Taiwanese, and Western cultural elements.

Ophélie de Charlotte Gingras: évolution du personnage pivot d’un roman intimiste pour adolescents
Get PDFEn appliquant les critères dégagés de recherches théoriques sur les personnages, nous avons effectué une analyse de contenu d’Ophélie de Charlotte Gingras. Publié en 2008, ce roman québécois pour la jeunesse correspond à notre définition d’un roman intimiste, puisqu’il met en scène une adolescente marginale qui dévoile, au moyen de son journal, son mal-être ainsi que les moyens qu’elle choisit pour y remédier. En raison de la possibilité de s’identifier à une narratrice qui évolue et de la présence d’un adolescent porteur d’un message de tolérance, cette œuvre est susceptible d’influencer positivement les conceptions des élèves du secondaire.

“Out by Sixteen”: Queer(ed) Girls in Ginger Snaps
Get PDFThe Canadian cult-horror film Ginger Snaps (2000) was marketed as a wry and wrenching adolescent female version of B-movie transformation narratives, conflating puberty with monstrosity while exposing how excesses of representation alter the effect of gender as a technology of feminine identity. Ginger Snaps complicates horror-film convention by emphasizing the intense relationship between the Fitzgerald sisters, suggesting that lesbian desire is part of the sisters’ resistance to normativity, best revealed by their blood pact to be “out by sixteen or dead in the scene.” By matching the heterosexual male werewolf’s appetite for the female body, Ginger’s teen-lesbian werewolf poses a visual and sexual conundrum in the contemporary Gothic horror film.
