    Get PDF
The rapid development of digital media has changed communication patterns, making YouTube a competitive space to attract and retain audiences. However, the study of creators' linguistic strategies in the context of digital marketing communication through speech act theory is still limited. This study aims to examine the linguistic strategies used by YouTube content creators to attract attention and increase the number of subscribers, using a pragmatic approach based on Searle speech act theory. The main focus of this study is to identify the types of speech acts such as assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives that appear in various YouTube videos, as well as their strategic roles in building relationships with audiences. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through observation and video transcription from seven relevant YouTube sources. The results of the study show that directive and assertive speech acts dominate the speech used by creators, especially in invitations to like, subscribe, and follow the links provided. Commissive and expressive speech acts also play an important role in creating emotional attachment and building trust. These findings indicate that linguistic strategies through speech acts are an effective tool in digital communication to influence audience behavior and expand the reach of content. These findings also expand the application of pragmatic theory in digital media and creative content, and contribute to the study of applied linguistics and media literacy. However, limited data, subjectivity of interpretation, and the lack of consideration of multimodal aspects indicate the need for further research with a broader scope and approach

Retaining Wall Innovation of Stone and Reinforced Concrete to Stand Guard Against Landslides and Earthquakes

    Get PDF
In the landslide–prone terrains of Puri District, East Java, engineers have crafted a groundbreaking solution to a life–threatening problem: a hybrid retaining wall that fuses traditional batu kali masonry with reinforced concrete, designed to outlast both relentless soil creep and violent earthquakes. Standing 4.25 meters tall and stretching 20 meters across a fragile slope, this structure—embedded 1.5 meters into the earth—defies seismic forces amplified by climate change, withstanding horizontal accelerations of 0.19g and shear forces that spike 388% during quakes. Rigorous analysis reveals its secret: D16 steel bars, spaced as tight as 100 mm at stress hotspots, work in concert with locally quarried stone to balance cost and resilience. The wall’s success lies in numbers—sliding safety factors of 4.02 (normal) and 1.78 (seismic), bearing pressures grazing 99.9% of limits without failure—but its true victory is human. Shielding a riverside community from catastrophic landslides, it ensures roads stay open, homes remain intact, and daily life flows uninterrupted. As Indonesia battles rising rainfall and tectonic unrest, this innovation offers a replicable blueprint: marrying ancestral building wisdom with 21st–century engineering to turn vulnerability into durability. Keywords: Retaining Wall; Seismic Condition; Landslide Mitigation; Masonry Structure; Sustainable Infrastructure.

Beyond self-defense: A just war theory critique of Israel’s military conduct in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, attack

    Get PDF
This article evaluates Israel’s military operations in Gaza from 2023 to 2024 through the lens of Just War Theory (JWT), focusing on both the justification for war (jus ad bellum) and conduct in war (jus in bello). Although Israel invokes Article 51 of the UN Charter to justify its actions as self-defense, the analysis reveals ethical and legal concerns regarding Just War principles, particularly proportionality, discrimination, and military necessity. A qualitative case study approach is employed, drawing on primary and secondary sources, including Israeli government declarations, international human rights reports, and civilian casualty data. The data is analyzed using thematic analysis, structured around the principles of Just War Theory. The study finds that while Israel’s self-defense rationale may fulfill some jus ad bellum criteria, its military actions raise ethical and legal concerns under jus in bello. Evidence points to disproportionate force, inadequate distinction between combatants and civilians, and questionable military necessity in several operations conducted in Gaza. International reactions are divided, with some countries, like the United States, supporting Israel’s right to self-defense, while others, like South Africa, condemn its actions as potential violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). This study makes a unique contribution to the literature by applying classical JWT to a contemporary asymmetric conflict complicated by technological warfare. It advances academic discourse on the ethics of state conduct in irregular wars and offers practical insights on aligning military necessity with moral responsibility in future conflicts

    Get PDF
Research on emotional geographies in EFL learning has been extensively carried out. However, the studies have mostly focused on the context of teachers' rather than students' emotional geographies. Informed by the emotional geographies framework, this study investigated the ways in which three EFL students construct and experience their emotional geographies while engaging in group work assignments. It specifically focuses on the participants’ past, present, and future experiences of participating in group work and how they deal with emotional issues. The study employed a narrative inquiry to elicit participants' lived experiences with in-depth interviews to collect the data. This method is considered appropriate for research designs that allow exploration of the emotional dimensions and experiences of participants in their past, present, and future through storytelling. For the data collection, this study conducted interviews in two ways, including direct interviews and online interviews. The findings show various negative emotional geographies experienced by EFL students in their group assignment participation, such as frustration, anxiety, insecurity, and disappointment. It also reveals that participants overcome those emotional issues in several ways, including adjusting their personalities, taking on more responsibility than others, and asking for help from third parties. The limitation of this study is the single data collection method, namely, interviews, which may affect the generalizability of the data. This study suggests more supportive learning environments by providing more information about group emotions and dynamics to students. Future research is encouraged to explore EFL students’ emotions in different contexts

    No full text
Wall gardening is a matching method of planting that utilizes walls both inside and outside the room. This urban farming model has become a trend in various urban areas. This study aims to find out the impact of the interaction of the composition of the growing media and the fermentation of the plant media on the growth, yield and quality of celery crops. (Apium graveolens L.). This study uses Factorial Group Random Planning (RAK). The first factor is the composition of various porous plant media (raw rice husks, rice husks charcoal, volcanic sands, cocopeat, chopped fern, andam, manure) (M) with 4 different compositions (M1 = 5: 0,5:2:0,5:0,5::0,5:5:0,5), (M2 = 3:1:1:1:2:1:1), ( M3 = 1:1:1:1:1:1) (M4 = 5:1:0,5:1:1:0), the second factor is fermentation of plant media. (F1 fermentation dan F2 non fermentation). The results of the study show that the treatment of composition of plant media (M) and fermentation of plant medium (F) only affects the variable length of plant and the number of leaf stems. Generally speaking, M3 treatment (porous plant media composition 1:1:1:1:1:1) is a medium composition that has the best growth, yield and quality compared to other compositions. Fermentation on the growing medium only affects the number of breeds and number of leaf sticks.
