The Effect of the #FreeBritney Movement on Bipartisanship Legislation: How a Pop Star’s Battle for Freedom Exposed Corruption in the American Conservatorship System
Get PDFPop singer Britney Spears was at the peak of her career when she was forcibly placed under a conservatorship arrangement by her father, Jamie Spears. Conservatorships, also referred to as guardianships in some states, are a legal arrangement in which a judge appoints a person or an organization to care for another adult who is unable to manage themselves or their finances. Conservators are responsible for managing the personal matters and/or estate of a conservatee, and the system is designed to act in the best interest of incapacitated individuals. For decades, conservatorships have been criticized by legal scholars and activists who have called for the urgent need for reform within the legal system. Varying state laws, a lack of federal regulation, and insufficient oversight of conservators are among the concerns that lead to abuse or exploitation under the legal arrangement.
The unique circumstances of Britney Spears’ conservatorship case sparked mainstream attention to conservatorships. The #FreeBritney movement gathered attention and calls to free the pop star from the allegedly abusive arrangement. In response, United States lawmakers from across the political spectrum have shared support for Britney Spears, who has inspired lawmakers to create bipartisan legislation towards conservatorship reform. Each state in the United States has its own conservatorship laws and the federal government does not have nationwide regulations of conservatorships. Based on varying state laws and a lack of federal policies, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the inconsistencies in existing conservatorship laws and determine where these gaps leave room for alleged abuse to happen in the system, as well as the steps being taken to address concerns of reform
Investigating the Association Between Trauma, Dissociation, and Aberrant Cognitive Experiences in Psychiatrically Hospitalized Adolescents
No full textExposures to trauma can occur throughout adolescence and are especially reported by those with psychiatric hospitalizations. A fairly common side effect of trauma -dissociation -- may be used by trauma survivors to avoid painful emotions or memories.Literature has noted that individuals with higher levels of dissociation have also reported higher levels of aberrant cognitive experiences (ACEs) on the psychotic spectrum (such as reality testing difficulties or thinking disturbance). To date, however, there is limited information on the interplay between trauma, dissociation, and these aberrant cognitive experiences in inpatient adolescent populations. For this study, participants were recruited from a local psychiatric hospital and archival test data was used. At the time of test administration, each participant was provided measures to rule out Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Findings indicated that nearly 30% of participants met clinical cutoff for posttraumatic stress (PTS) or dissociation scores, as measured by self-report. When correlated with the MMPI-A-RF\u27s RCS scale, those with higher PTS or dissociations cores were found to have higher levels of ACEs. While the presence of PTS alone did not predict ACEs, the presence and acknowledgement of dissociation did. Given this,further examination of the relationship between these variables is warranted to aid in reducing risk of trauma and its impact on psychological functioning in youth
Pognalysis: An Analysis of Gender and Language on Twitch.tv
Get PDFWith the success of the video game and eSports industries, comes the rise of Twitch.tv (also known as Twitch), the most popular live-streaming platform today. Being that the most popular activity to stream on Twitch.tv is video games, there is a lot of overlap between those who play video games or are avid eSports fans and those who watch Twitch. However, these communities are notorious for their hostility towards women. The goal of this study is to assess, if any, the differences in atmosphere, as well as the differences in the presence of gendered language/harassment, profanity, and non-gaming/non-activity related words between male and female Twitch streamers. In this study, I web-scraped live Twitch chats, pulled statistically overrepresented words, and ran various probit regressions to accomplish this. Findings indicate that there is somewhat a presence of gendered language/harassment and profanity on Twitch.tv. There is also a slight but statistically significant difference in probability of profanity, and environment between male and female Twitch streamers. The specific marginal effects of gender showed that for a male streamer, the likelihood of presence of harassment or profanity increased by 1.26%, while the likelihood of presence of harassment decreased by .08% in comparison to female streamers. Lastly, for a male streamer, the likelihood of presence of profanity increased by 1.42% in comparison to female streamers. Harassment, however, showed to be statistically insignificant, possibly due to various caveats

No full textIn order to better understand the place of the Dysrégulation Profile (DP; Achenbach, 2001) in the context of affect and behavioral regulation, this study explored the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-A; Butcher et al., 1992) and Rorschach (Exner, 1974) correlates of the DP in a sample of 817 inpatient adolescents. Results revealed significant relationships between the DP and the Affective Ratio (Aft) on the Rorschach, as well as between the DP and the Aggressiveness and Disconstraint Psychopathology Five (PSY-5) scales on the MMPI-A. These findings have important implications for better understanding what the DP is measuring in clinical assessment and how it can be used to inform diagnosis and treatment
