    The Fast Fashion Industry: Formulating the Future of Environmental Change

    This Note focuses on the harmful environmental impacts the fast fashion industry has created, and continues to create, on our planet. In the 1960s, consumer attitude towards clothing shifted drastically when demand for new, disposable clothing skyrocketed. These choices led fashion retailers to give life to the environmentally detrimental breed of “fast fashion.” Moving production from a domestic to an international level, increasing the amount of clothing collections on a yearly basis, and lack of transparency in supply chain are just a few examples of the dangers this industry has created for our planet. The fast fashion industry in particular is one that has been overlooked for decades, now only in focus due to the almost irreparable harm it has caused on a transnational level. No clear, collective legal definition exists for “sustainability” in the fashion industry. This Note explores, analyzes and compares current and potential fashion-specific legislation, domestically and internationally, that has not only created definitions but policies going forward for collective action. This Note focuses on the “four c’s”: compliance, caliber, consumers and circularity. These “c’s” create a broad answer as to how some of this environmental damage can be stopped going forward. The solution lies in collective transparency as well as a circular economy. The growth of investment in companies who value environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards has allowed consumers to change past behaviors toward a circular economy.     Exploring the antikythera mechanism through augmented reality.

    The Antikythera mechanism is the oldest known analogue computer. Discovered off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera, the Antikythera mechanism predicts and displays the position of astronomical bodies as well as astronomical phenomena. Due to its complexity, visualization of the gears movement can be very difficult. For my project I created an interactive Augmented Reality (AR) model of the Antikythera mechanism using Unity game engine. I hope this AR application exposes people to the Antikythera mechanism and its inner workings

    Predicting flux data for exoplanet detection.

    This paper will focus on utilizing five different methods of machine learning models to properly classify celestial bodies orbiting a star as an exoplanet or a false positive. We will be utilizing a recurrent neural network (RNN), a logistical regression model (LR), and a Random Forest Classifier (RF). The focus of the data set was to improve access to balanced data in the form of extracted features and time series graphs, as well as looking into potential solutions for previous shortcomings outlined in prior work, specifically relating to logistical regression models. Training data was assembled from Astronet, a pipeline that included data from the Kepler satellite and the transiting exoplanet survey satellite (TESS). 6,000 different stars were analyzed, with 3,000 being systems without any exoplanets confirmed, and 3,000 being confirmed instances of an exoplanet. The random forest model was optimized with GridSearch for performance, as well as one of the logistical regression models. Two logistic regression models were also used, with logistical regression as the base and a C4.5 Decision Tree and Support Vector Machine used as different models stacked on top of the predictions, respectfully. In addition, a recurrent neural network was also trained on a smaller subset of the data to account for the necessary computational power, with the class split remaining the same. The metrics used for analysis were accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUCROC). The results showed all machine learning models trained having at least 90% accuracy, with improvements shown in logistical regression from the stacking methods used. The results also showed the benefits of using LSTM to optimize recurrent neural networks to solve the disappearing gradient problem

    Early childhood is often referred to as a sensitive period of development due to the critical nature of skills a young child is expected to acquire across a short period of time. It is a time when foundational social-emotional and academic skills can set the trajectory for later successful outcomes. It is also a time when the lack of critical skill development can increase a child’s risk for future mental health and other long-term negative outcomes. Therefore, it is always pressing that early childhood institutions and stakeholders are abreast of evidence-based practices that promote the healthy development of a child’s social-emotional and academic well-being. The focus of the second volume of this two-part special issue in Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education is aimed at providing effective practices to help relevant stakeholders promote positive pro-social outcomes throughout early childhood.     Aligning Classroom Management Strategies with a Social Emotional Learning Curriculum in Early Childhood

    Traditionally, school-based preventative frameworks have been implemented in isolation with little consideration of alignment and integration of practices throughout the school day. The present study aims to address this gap by increasing school psychologists’ preventative involvement with consultation in early childhood school settings. Using an integrated approach through a multiple baseline design, four Head Start educators were trained in classroom management practices, to increase opportunities throughout the day for teaching, prompting, and reinforcing key skills taught through the Second Step Early Learning (SSEL) social emotional learning curriculum. Findings suggest that a brief professional development session (1-hour) followed by weekly performance feedback (15 minutes) largely increased educator use of aligning classroom management strategies with weekly SSEL lessons (ES = .94, p-value

    Interdisciplinary Collaborative Practice in Early Childhood

    Young children often present with challenging behaviors such as tantrums, aggression, and noncompliance. Rates of expulsion for behavior concerns in early childhood are alarming and can have long-term negative implications for children and their families (Early Childhood Learning and Knowledge Center, 2022). Implementation of a systematic multi-tiered system of supports framework can improve behavioral outcomes of young children. To effectively meet child and family needs within these frameworks, it is integral for members of the team to collaborate. Interdisciplinary teams within early childhood might include families, teachers, school psychologists, behavior analysts, speech language pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other related mental health and medical providers. The Interprofessional Education Collaborative outlined competencies for interdisciplinary collaborative practice that are organized within four domains: values and ethics, roles/responsibilities, interdisciplinary communication, and teams/teamwork. To facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration (IC) in practice, it is important to provide opportunities for collaboration across disciplines within coursework and field experiences. In this paper, we provide an example of an interdisciplinary training program to support behavioral and mental health needs of children. The training includes graduate students in applied behavior analysis, school psychology, and special education. Scholars participating in the program complete coursework for their specific programs in addition to joint coursework, seminars, and practicum activities in school settings. Throughout the program, scholars gain knowledge and skills in eight competencies identified for the program. Based on the literature and our training experience, we also outline insights and actions for training at the university-level and practitioner-level to implement interdisciplinary teaming

    Perspectives for the Delivery of Early Intervention Services via Telemedicine in Rural States: Outcomes from the COVID-19 Pandemic

    The current study describes outcomes for seven families who participated in telehealth services from an early intervention clinic in a rural state during the COVID-19 pandemic. Families received different levels of care from a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA®) over three months, ranging from one hour to 20 hours per week. The telemedicine sessions primarily focused on teaching caregivers to implement protocols that focused on rapport-building (i.e., Time-In [TI]), increasing child compliance with instructions (i.e., Effective Instruction Delivery [EID]), and language acquisition programs selected from the Promoting Emergence of Advanced Knowledge (PEAK) Comprehensive Assessment and Curriculum. At the conclusion of the telemedicine sessions, parents implemented the protocols with high degrees of treatment integrity, and improvements in skill acquisition on a standardized language assessment were observed for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Implications for providing telemedicine services to rural and underserved communities without access to early intervention services and future directions for research are discussed
