The Effects of Personality on Intertemporal Choice
This dissertation attempts to unveil new information concerning intertemporal choice, by trying to find a correlation between personality and the temporal choices that people make. The methodology for doing so is as follows: a survey was distributed and responses were regressed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). Given that there were two questions (one formatted using a calendar date and the other using a word format) about intertemporal choice (subjects were asked to choose a certain payoff corresponding to a specific point in time), there were two models constructed. Each model had the following variable structure: the dependent variable was the expected payoff, while the independent variables were gender, grade, and most importantly, the point total corresponding to the questions about personality. The results of the regression were not statistically significant, most likely majorly due to the smaller sample size of 204 observations as well as a possible presence of a sample bias of college students; however, interesting coefficient sign changes in gender and grade occurred between the two models. Furthermore, the coefficient sign on both models for the point total variable was negative, showing that the more self-interested someone is (according to a personality test), the more present-gain oriented they seem to be. A repetition of the experiment on a grander scale will either confirm or deny these variables’ role in deciding expected payoffs involving intertemporal choices
The Constitution and Revenge Porn
While the Supreme Court has recognized a number of circumstances that justify government impingements on free expression, the Court has been extremely reluctant to permit speech restrictions that discriminate based on a message’s content, its viewpoint, or the speaker. It has nearly always refused to tolerate such discrimination unless the case falls within one of the several historically established exceptions to First Amendment protection. Because of the special place that the modern First Amendment cases accord to content discrimination (and the allied discriminations based on viewpoint and speaker), any statutes designed specifically to outlaw revenge porn as such would seem to face some very tough sledding—if indeed they can be written in ways that are constitutionally permissible at all.
At the end of this paper, I propose a possible approach to crafting a law that addresses the primary harms of revenge porn, but which seeks avoid the direct affront to the First Amendment of the revenge porn laws currently proposed and enacted. Whether this approach would actually work is a question that cannot be answered with certainty but, unless the Supreme Court changes the application of the First Amendment to accommodate revenge porn, I think its chances are at least better than the statutes, drafts and proposals to date
The Relationship Between Depression, Sleep Disturbance, and Cognitive Inefficiency in a Child Psychiatric Sample
The present study examined the relationship between depression, sleep problems, and cognitive inefficiency in a sample of 1445 child psychiatric inpatients. The study utilized an archival data set of assessment measures completed by patients during their psychiatric hospitalizations. This study explored three general areas of inquiry: therapist ratings of sleep disturbance within the child psychiatric population and its relationship with other psychiatric diagnoses, the relationship between therapist and parent ratings of sleep disruption and the presence of depressive symptoms, and finally the relationship between sleep disruption, depression, and cognitive inefficiency. An exploratory factor analysis of therapist rated sleep variables was first gathered from the sample to examine focal measures of sleep disruption. The factor analysis revealed two factors, however, one of the factors included hypersomnia and sleepwalking, which both have extremely low rates of occurrence in the psychiatric population. Thus, future analyses were conducted using the different components of sleep instead of using factor scores. Comparisons of the frequencies of various types of sleep disturbance across groups with depressive disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, and behavioral disorders revealed three significant associations: children with psychotic disorders were more likely than children without psychotic disorders to report hypersomnia, and children with anxiety disorders were more likely than children without anxiety disorders to report both early awakening as well as initial insomnia. Correlational analyses revealed no significant relationships on therapist and parent ratings across symptoms of both depression and sleep. Using therapist ratings, correlational analyses showed that sleep problems and cognitive inefficiency showed that children with symptoms of restless sleep and initial insomnia showed significantly lower scores on attention scales. Correlational analyses between ratings of depression and cognitive inefficiency also revealed significant relationships: children with more depressed moods were found to have higher general cognitive abilities (GAI) and a larger discrepancy between their GM and their cognitive processing abilities (CPI), children with increased psychomotor activity were found to have lower general cognitive abilities, and children with higher likelihood of suicidality were found to have higher GM, and increased planning and attention abilities. Regression analyses were performed to predict cognitive inefficiency from sleep and depression variables. These results revealed that several variables of sleep and depression were found to be predictive of different measurements of cognitive inefficiency. Children reported to have either a prevailing depressed mood state or interrupted sleep predicted to have a larger GAI and CPI discrepancy. Children reported to have more restless sleep were predicted to have lower scores on the Attention scale of the CAS. Lastly, children reported to have more symptoms of initial insomnia showed more omissions on the CPT

1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-1Η-imidazole (metronidazole, MET) is a medication that is used to treat infections by a variety of anaerobic organisms, but there are relatively few reports of the structures of metal compounds that exhibit coordination of metronidazole. We have demonstrated that MET reacts with AgBF4 to give [Ag(MET)2]BF4•CH3OH, in which the AgI cation is coordinated by two MET ligands with a trans arrangement. The structure of [Ag(MET)2]BF4 exhibits some interesting differences from its nitrate counterpart, [Ag(MET)2]NO3 [Fun et al. (2008). Acta Cryst. E64, m668]. For instance, although the two MET ligands of both [Ag(MET)2]BF4 and [Ag(MET)2]NO3 are almost coplanar, the former compound has an anti-like geometry with a molecular inversion center, but the latter has a syn-like arrangement. In the crystal, the BF4− anion is linked by an O—H•••F hydrogen bond to the methanol solvent molecule, which is, in turn, linked to the cation by an O— H•••O hydrogen bond; the components of the structure are linked by O—H•••O hydrogen bonds, forming chains along [001]. One of the MET ligands and the BF4 − anion are disordered over two sets of sites with ratios of refined occupancies 0.501 (17):0.499 (17) and 0.539 (19):0.461 (19), respectively
Driving Public Cloud Adoption through Qualitative and Quantitative Modeling
CIO’s and IT managers alike are looking at cloud technologies as a way to reduce IT costs, add flexibility, and reduce their overall IT landscape. Public cloud platforms at leading cloud service provider’s, including Microsoft, AWS, and IBM, offer an attractive cost model that promises to reduce IT costs. However, there are issues that concern CIO’s and IT managers regarding the risks that a public cloud platform may inherently have. There are assumptions and general guidelines concerning public cloud adoption (e.g., security, data leaks, etc.) that are used as determining factors to migrate to a public cloud. Many of the guidelines recommend not migrating critical IT assets to a public cloud for a number of reasons, most relating to risk and security. As a result, IT organizations tend to stay away from migrating critical IT assets to a public cloud; possibly losing the maximum economic benefits that a public cloud can offer. When using assumption and general guidelines to decide public cloud migration strategies, risk and reward is not fully analyzed in a comparative model (i.e., on-premise and cloud service provider comparison), which may result in lost opportunity to migrate critical IT assets to a public cloud and reduce IT costs. The lack of qualitative and quantitative modeling leaves (de facto) assumption and generally accepted guidelines as the decision-making model. This research focuses on enabling IT managers to do quantitative and qualitative analysis through modeling, where IT assets can be analyzed through comparative and sensitivity analysis to understand risk and reward, in an effort to drive public cloud adoption, and enable more economic benefits for reducing IT costs
