Prayer and Psychological Well-being: The Mediating Role of Mindfulness

    No full text
Two hundred and eighty-one men and women participated in a study that examined the mediating role of mindfulness in the relationship between prayer and psychological well-being. Scales that measured prayer, dispositional mindfulness, and psychological well-being were given out. Mindfulness mediated the positive correlation between three prayer types (adoration, thanksgiving, and reception) and psychological well-being but not between the other three prayer types (supplication, confession, and obligation) and psychological well-being. These findings have broad implications for integrating prayer and mindfulness based-interventions in treatment for religious/spiritual individuals

Blockchain Technology: An Analysis of Potential Applications and Uses

    Get PDF
This paper will focus on explaining what blockchain technology is, the fundamentals of how it works, and applications of it. By utilizing sophisticated cryptography, a distributed network, a specified order of events the technology is able to create a ledger that cannot be altered due to its existence on many computers that able to detect if the data has been changed or tampered with. To help illustrate the uses of blockchain technology the technical explanation is complemented with real and hypothetical ways that the technology it being used. The use of blockchain technology originated with financial application and has expanded to many industries as new and creative ideas come to fruition

Cyberbullying and Attachment Theory: Predictors of Cyberbullying Behaviors in an Undergraduate Population.

    No full text
As reliance on technology and the internet has increased over the years, it is important to analyze how individuals use these technologies for positive and negative social contact. Research has examined predictors of cyberbullying behaviors for various age groups, with the majority of research focusing on middle school and high school aged children (Doane, Kelley, Chiang, & Padilla, 2013; Sevcikova & Smahel, 2009; Burton, Florell, & Wygant, 2013). Specifically, numerous studies have shown a connection between insecure attachment to caregivers and increased rates of bullying, cyberbullying, aggressive behaviors, antisocial traits, etc (Allen, Porter, & McFarland, 2007; Constantino et al., 2007). Similarly, research on middle school youth has shown that individuals who reported positive peer and parent attachment displayed less cyberbullying behaviors (Burton, Florell & Wygant, 2013). Doane, Kelley, Chiang, and Padilla (2013) created the cyberbullying experiences survey (CES) specifically as a measure to quantify cyberbullying behaviors for this population. Finn (2004), discovered that approximately 1 in 10 young adults engage in cyberbullying and the present study seeks to add to the growing literature on cyberbullying with older populations to corroborate previous studies demonstrating a relationship between bullying and cyberbullying behaviors and adult attachment. Results suggest a mediation relationship exists between cyberbullying victimization, aggression, and age of first cyberbullying experience

The Relationship between Highly Analytical Marketing Practices and Marketing Performance

    No full text
Marketing Analytics is a relatively new but increasingly prominent field in which data tools are applied to quantify and monitor marketing performance and customer information to optimize investments in marketing programs and maximizing customer interaction. Marketing Analytics is a sub-discipline of broader analytics and includes the people, processes and technology to generate insights that improve marketing performance. In this B2B study, the author established a set of predictors that help determine the degree to which a firm’s marketing function is analytically driven. The research builds on extant theories of market orientation by establishing the presence of a new construct known as Marketing Analytics Orientation (MAO) through qualitative and quantitative research methods including factor analysis and structured equation modeling. Firms in the study are scored on the MAO Index and the characteristics of the more analytical firms are discussed. Furthermore, the study explores the relationship between the factors that comprise Marketing Analytics Orientation (MAO) and Marketing Performance (MP)

The WTO Agreements and the Regulation of Energy Markets: Is There a Good FiT?

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on this second wave of WTO RE disputes. It will assess whether or to what extent policy instruments requiring increased use of RE in national electricity grids, notably FiT, RPS and EA regulations, are consistent with WTO legal obligations. Part II of this paper will discuss energy markets, and the issues that are presented through incorporation of RE into national grids. Part III will shift focus to the WTO. It will introduce the WTO and relevant WTO law, with a particular emphasis on the Appellate Body’s conclusion in its Canada – RE/FiT report. Part IV will assess whether or to what extent WTO Member States can enact FiT, RPS and EA regulations without fear of possible WTO litigation. Part V will conclude with recommendations

E Pluribus Unum – Out of Many, One Common European Sales Law?

    Get PDF
In light of the fragmentation due to the nationalization of civil and commercial law and the growing intensity of cross-border trade in manufactured goods, arguments for the unification of private law surfaced already from the early 20th century. Such attempts resulted in, among others, the CISG, the UPICC or the PECL. In line with this pattern, as an attempt to make Out of Many, One Common European Sales Law, a Proposal for a Regulation on a Common European Sales Law (CESL) was published in 2011. The aim of the present contribution is to explore the background of the Proposal and to assess its significance for the future, with specific attention to the challenges of the digital age. Section I of the paper provides an overview of the process in the first decade of the 21st century leading to the publication of the Proposal, identifying the various stages of making an instrument. This is followed by the description of the Proposal and its evaluation in Section II. Although the immediate implementation and application of the instrument are not feasible, the text contains some promising elements to build on. According to the main findings of the paper, in the new millennium no longer merely international trade in manufactured goods is a chief factor triggering the implementation of international instruments of contract law. The innovations which pose new challenges and regulatory needs, also addressed in the CESL, are trade in digital content and e-commerce. Considering a digital key to the success of regulatory aspirations, the paper thus outlines ways European and international legislation might go in terms of regulating cross-border trade in the age of information technology. Accordingly, the areas to focus on for a start are transactions for the supply of digital content and e-commerce transactions

Friends or Foes? The Problem of South Florida’s Invasive Mangroves

    Get PDF
A recent global review on the impacts of climate change on mangroves concluded that different regions will experience varying degrees of impacts due to the variability of expected changes in climate (shifts in precipitation, frequency and intensity of storms, droughts, sea level rise, change of ocean currents, increases in CO2 concentrations, etc.) and the variety of types and mangrove assemblages growing in these regions, including different species composition of mangrove forests. In North America and the Caribbean, these changes are dependent upon a predicted higher frequency (and intensity) of tropical storms, sea level rise, changes in patterns of precipitation, and higher temperatures. Located at the land-sea interface, mangroves in this region are expected to expand their ranges poleward (towards North Florida), or migrate into other coastal ecosystems (e.g., the Everglades), provided no natural or urban center barriers are present to prevent this expansion. If rains increase, as is anticipated, along the United States-Mexico border, mangroves may likely begin to thrive in places currently occupied by unvegetated salt flats. However, a lack of rain may also be of benefit in areas such as Louisiana where marsh diebacks have been linked to droughts, which directly increases the likelihood of mangrove migrations into these ecosystems. Given the services that mangroves provide and the legal protections that mangroves receive, it is shocking to discover that their future existence may be compromised or threatened. Certainly, the greatest threats to mangroves in Florida are from direct and indirect human impacts of development, including pollution and habitat destruction. Mangroves may also be naturally damaged and destroyed from disturbance events such as tropical storms and hurricanes. However, a new threat to native mangroves has recently emerged: the introduction of invasive mangrove species. These non-native species may threaten the ecosystem dynamics of mangrove forests and may alter the natural coastal landscape of South Florida unless eradicated
