Evaluation of Anomaly Detection-Based Tools in an Industrial Control Systems Environment
This study evaluates Behavioral Anomaly Detection Tools used in an Industrial Control System environment. The goal is to show the usefulness of Behavioral Anomaly Detection-Based capabilities in an Industrial Control Systems (ICS) environment as they are used in their manufacturing processes. Implementing machine learning behavioral anomaly detection devices can provide a key security component in sustaining business operations, particularly those based in ICS. One of the ways to interrupt operations in an industrial control systems environment is to introduce anomalous data into their manufacturing processes, whether knowingly or accidentally. Although the example solutions will focus on cybersecurity, it may also produce benefits to manufacturers in detecting anomalous environments not related to security such as failing parts. Using an Industrial Control Robotics environment, I will evaluate Anomaly Detection Tools used in critical infrastructure, such as public works systems, critical manufacturing systems, and other industrial control systems. The research produced from the use of the environment will support the efforts of industry and government to develop more secure industrial control systems as well as improve the security of existing infrastructure
Defending Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) Attacks on Web Applications
This work presents the most current and comprehensive understanding of a not very well understood web vulnerability known as the CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery) and provides specific solutions to identify and defend CSRF vulnerabilities. The immediate benefits of this work include tangible and pragmatic application framework for use by individuals, organizations and developers, either as consumers or providers of web services. This work responds directly to the challenges of keeping pace with the evolving cyber technologies and vulnerabilities that increasingly expose businesses towards privacy and identity theft specific attacks, where the traditional anti-virus and anti-spyware approaches fail. The urgency to come up with appropriate detection and defense mechanism against the lethal CSRF attacks is indicated due to expanding cloud based technologies, HTML5, Semantic Web, and various emerging security frameworks comprised of inchoate vestigial of “Big Data” that demand exceedingly evolved defense mechanisms. A methodical approach is used to investigate CSRF attacks and remedies are proposed by introducing a novel distinctive set of algorithms that use intelligent assumptions to detect and defend CSRF. In this work, design details of a CSRF Detection Model (CDM), implantation and experimentation results of CDM are elaborated to detect, predict and provide solutions for CSRF attacks on contemporary Web Applications and Web Services environment. Establishing Climate Change Standing: A New Approach
Climate change is one of the thorniest political, legal, and economic issues of our time. Therefore, a new legal approach to the issue is required. This Note proposes a streamlined approach for climate change standing, one that assumes injury in fact and causation for a class of discernible climate change harms. A streamlined approach will enable litigants harmed by climate change to seek redress in court, providing an outlet for redress where there has previously been none. Part II of this Note discusses the constitutional doctrine of standing. It begins with a summary of Article III and the logic behind the case or controversy requirement, it then goes on to analyze each element of standing, (1) injury in fact, (2) causation, and (3) redressability. Part III analyzes the doctrine of standing in environmental cases, discussing notable cases such as Lujan v. Defenders of Wildlife and Juliana v. United States. Part IV compares the American approach to judicial standing to other countries with more liberalized standing requirements, such as the Philippines. Part V argues for a new, streamlined approach for climate change standing. This Note concludes with the hypothesis that establishing standing using the three-part test is largely an academic exercise, one with illogical constraints that can be overcome with simple fixes (such as the purchase of a plane ticket) and that a new, streamlined approach for climate change standing, should be adopted. Judging During Crises: Can Judges Protect the Facts?
With the advent of instantaneous information and the trend toward shrinking adherence to the truth, the conversation surrounding the ability of judges to conduct outside research into the matters before them is gaining urgency. In a “post-truth” world, the role that the judiciary plays in our democracy must shift from trier of fact to guardian of factual integrity. And to do this, the professional ethics rules assigned to the judiciary may need re-evaluation.
This Essay argues that the judiciary\u27s ambivalence to its role as fact finder must be overcome, and where appropriate, judges may be empowered to seek out supplemental information to be shared with the parties to better identify the truth at the center of the controversy. Further, in light of the many powers judges already possess to investigate the facts, including to elicit witness testimony, further expanding the courts\u27 powers to research the matters before them will not undermine the unbiased nature of the judiciary. It will, rather, strengthen previously sanctioned powers of investigation to better protect against the ever-shifting political tides keen to influence the judicial outcomes handed down from the court
Shock Events - Examining the Effects of Firm Responsibility, Crisis Response Communication and Reputation-repair Actions on Shareholder Value
This study examines a unique hand-collected database of ninety-six significant and unexpected (shock) events to examine the following research questions: i. Is there a relationship between a company\u27s attributed level of responsibility for an event and the magnitude of its reputational losses? ii. Does a company\u27s adherence to a crisis-response framework help to mitigate reputational losses? iii. Does a company\u27s announcement of reputation-repair actions help to mitigate reputational losses, and does the number, and the number of different types of company-announced reputation-repair actions vary with a company\u27s attributed responsibility for the event? This study extends the literature on the shareholder effects of shock events and is unique in utilizing events with a full continuum of attributed-firm responsibility and in examining how a company\u27s adherence to a crisis-response framework helps to mitigate reputational losses. This also study extends the literature on the shareholder effects of reputation-repair actions and is unique in examining these effects with a sample of events with a full continuum of attributed-firm responsibility. The results of this study reveal a significant relationship between a company\u27s attributed level of responsibility for an event and the magnitude of its reputational losses. The results also reflect that while communication appears to mitigate reputational losses, the relationship of a firm\u27s adherence to a crisis-response framework and the level of recovery was not significant. Finally, the results of the study show that significant relationships exist between both the number and the number of different types of reputation-repair actions that firms announce and their attributed level of responsibility for the event, and that such announcements help to significantly mitigate reputational losses

Evaluating an MLB General Manager’s Bang for their Buck
With my passion for baseball, I decided to calculate the value of each player on an MLB active roster and determine whether they are underpaid or overpaid. I then used that information to evaluate and rank how efficient each MLB general manager utilizes their money on players. With the luxury tax becoming more of an issue for teams with high payrolls, there has been an emphasis on general managers to construct a team that will be highly competitive at a reasonably low price. In my report, I imported data that reflected the position for each player as well as their adjusted salary. The key metric used to determine the value is known as wins above replacement (WAR). A player\u27s WAR was applied to the average salary for their position to get an estimated value. Using the salary error and percentage error for the whole team, I ranked each general manager. There are numerous ways that statisticians have come up with to apply to the valuation of players. WAR is a relatively new metric that is considered to be one of the best when comparing players. Usually, valuations have been done using traditional statistics such as batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. My method provides a newer and hopefully more accurate way to determine the true value of each player. The results showed that better-rated teams usually had a higher salary error. This means they were getting more production from players than their salary would suggest. When analyzing the data, I noticed that calculations such as a team\u27s percentage salary error can be misrepresented by having some outliers in the data. Ultimately my method gives a different perspective to create a player\u27s valuation. My future research include multiple statistics in order to get a more accurate representation of one\u27s salary based on their production
