    Vicarious Dissonance : Meta-analysis

    No full text
Vicarious dissonance is the phenomenon that describes the possibility that individuals may experience cognitive dissonance vicariously when they witness an inconsistent act committed by a member of their own group. After more than 15 years of research, uncertainties remain as to the effectiveness of experimental procedures set up in vicarious dissonance to obtain effects, raising the need for a meta-analytic summary of the literature. In this registered report, we conducted a meta-analysis (k = [X], n = [X]) of the effect of vicarious dissonance. We found [empirical support] for the vicarious dissonance effect, [g = X]. Vicarious dissonance is a meaningful effect for [X]. Study heterogeneity was [Low/high]. [Summarize results]. We tested [List of moderators]. We found that [meaningful moderation] moderated vicarious dissonance. Vicarious dissonance was stronger [list of conditions]. [Brief descriptions of strengths and limitations, and future research directions] We registered our meta-analysis here: https://osf.io/t5vs7/?view_only=e9dc20e90a584afbb2456aecd8809c9

Proactive Body Temperature Management Protocol and Lifestyle Interventions as Predictable Cures for COVID-19 Disease: Curative Protocols Discovered from a Century of Medical Discoveries

    No full text
Based on a century of medical discoveries, we propose a methodology of using lifestyle interventions and proactive body temperature management protocol as prevention and cure for COVID-19 disease. We produce robust evidence to show that lifestyle interventions have a 100% “expected response rate”, with a curative power being one to three orders of magnitude larger than that of a single lifestyle factor determined by clinical trials and can deliver immediate benefits to long-term curative benefits. On basis of a large number of studies, we propose that the local blood flow along the inner surface of the respiratory track works like an anti-viral shield, which is capable of robustly prevent and terminate viral and other infections. Breathing cold temperature from 26 °C to a frigid temperature can dramatically reduce local temperatures along the track and thus cripples the protective shield by reducing local blood flow to as little as 3-10%. A proactive body temperature management protocol (PBTM or PRTPM), which comprises pre-exposure, during-exposure, and post-exposure measures, are capable of boosting innate immune functions, anti-viral defenses, and vital organ functions. We estimate that pre-exposure and during-exposure measures can reduce temperature drops along the tract by 5°C to 20 °C, and that a series of post-exposure measures can increase local blood flow rates along the track by 2 to 20 times. The proposed measures can completely restore the anti-viral shield. All kinds epidemiological data support our estimated curative power that the protocol can prevent 90% to 97% infection incidences and deaths. We show that the protocol is even more powerful than vaccine, and maintaining a reasonable local temperature along the respiratory track is a required condition for delivering and boosting vaccine’s protection. Current medical researches have excluded temperature and air as treatments in all on-going clinical trials. This misplaced priority is an inevitable result of the financial arrangement of all parties in medicine. Such financial arrangement provides too much incentive for medicalization, the key elements of which include finding revenue-making treatments, producing good data for promoting the treatments, and finding more patients for using treatments. Since lifestyle interventions and proactive body temperature management protocol cannot be studied by flawed research model and cannot be patented for monopoly, no entity has incentives to explore their extraordinary benefits. We also found that the reason of failure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic is same as failure to find cures for cancer and AIDS. Several studies imply that best solutions for cancer, AIDS and all chronic diseases are not revenue-generating medical treatments, but things that cannot sold for revenues and things that are born and carried in human genome. Based on a century of medical discoveries in disease causes, we propose for the federal government that the most cost-effective measures are finding and eliminating a large number of disease causes hidden in food production lines, family kitchens, cooking culture, personal cooking habits, home appliances, etc. This is the only way to root out causes for more than 90% chronic diseases incidences

Racial Disparities in COVID-19 Impacts in Michigan, USA

    No full text
Racial disparities have been observed in the impacts of COVID-19 in the United States. In this paper, we used a representative sample of adults in Michigan to examine differences in COVID-19 impacts on Blacks and Whites in four domains: direct, perceived, political, and behavioral. We found that in the initial wave of the outbreak in May 2020, Blacks experienced more severe direct impacts: they were more likely to be diagnosed or know someone who was diagnosed, and more likely to lose their job compared to Whites. Additionally, Blacks differed significantly from Whites in their assessment of COVID-19's threat to public health and the economy, the adequacy of government responses to COVID-19, and the appropriateness of behavioral changes to mitigate COVID-19's spread. Although in many cases these views of COVID-19 were also associated with political ideology, this association was significantly stronger for Whites than Blacks. Continued investigation of racial disparities in COVID-19's impact is necessary, however these preliminary findings of a race-by-ideology interaction are important because they suggest some racial disparities are restricted to conservatives, while more liberal Whites and Blacks exhibit few differences

1/f Fluctuations on a Chain of Causal Relationships (Ⅱ); Computer Simulations

    No full text
Computer simulations are used to test how the branching process model is available to discuss the 1⁄f problem with the equations described in my previous paper, where a particle may branch into several particles, be absorbed, or be observed by a detector along a chain of causal relationships. In this paper, it is assumed that exactly two particles are produced by a branching process. The simulations show that the power spectrum of a series formed by the time intervals between successive particle detections is characterized by a 1⁄f distribution over a wide range of frequencies (more than eight decades). It is also discussed that the familiar 1⁄f fluctuations are strongly related to a chain of causal relationships in a natural phenomenon, reminiscent of the law of karma in Buddhism

Side- and similarity-biases during confidence conformity

    No full text
Memory conformity may develop when people are confronted with distinct memories reported by others in social situations and knowingly/unknowingly adhere to these exogenous memories. Earlier research on memory conformity suggests that (1) subjects were more likely to conform to confederate with high confidence; (2) subjects with low confidence on their memory accuracy were more likely to conform, and; (3) this subjective confidence could be adjust by social manipulations. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how the confidence levels of ours and others may interact and produce a combined effect on our degree of conformity. More importantly, is memory conformity, defined by a complete adoption of the opposite side, the result of a gradual accumulation of subtler changes at the confidence level, i.e., a buildup of confidence conformity? Here, we followed participant’s confidence transformation quantitatively over three confederate sessions in a memory test. After studying a set of human motion videos, participants had to answer simultaneously whether a target or lure video had appeared before by indicating their side (i.e., Yes/No) and their associated confidence rating. Participants were allowed to adjust their responses as they were being shown randomly-generated confederates’ answers and confidence values. Results show that participants indeed demonstrated confidence conformity. Interestingly, they tended to become committed to their side early on and gain confidence gradually over subsequent sessions. This polarizing behavior may be explained by two kinds of preferences: (1) Participant’s confidence enhancement towards same-sided confederates was greater in magnitude compared to the decrement towards an opposite-sided confederate; and (2) Participants had the most effective confidence boost when the same-sided confederates shared similar, but not considerably different, confidence level to theirs. In other words, humans exhibit side- and similarity-biases during confidence conformity

Gang rule: Understanding and Countering Criminal Governance

    No full text
Criminal groups govern millions worldwide. Even in strong states, gangs resolve disputes and provide security. Why do these duopolies of coercion emerge? Often, gangs fill vacuums of official power, suggesting that increasing state presence should crowd out criminal governance. We show, however, that state and gang rule are sometimes complements. In particular, gangs could minimize seizures and arrests by keeping neighborhoods orderly and loyal. If true, increasing state presence could increase incentives for gang rule. In Medellín, Colombia, criminal leaders told us they rule to protect drug rents from police. We test gang responses to state presence using a geographic discontinuity. Internal border changes in 1987 assigned blocks to be closer or further from state security for three decades. Gangs exogenously closer to state presence developed more governance over time. They primarily did so in neighborhoods with the greatest potential drug rents. This suggests new strategies for countering criminal governance

Asian=Machine, Black=Animal? The Racial Asymmetry of Dehumanization

    No full text
While research on racism and dehumanization is extensive, complexities in stigmatization experienced by different racial groups are often understudied. Twelve studies using a wide array of methods (experimental, archival, and computational) and data sources (online samples, word embeddings, and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data) spotlight a racial asymmetry in dehumanization: whereas Black people are more often subjected to animalistic dehumanization, Asian people are predominantly subjected to mechanistic dehumanization. We demonstrate this asymmetry from the vantage point of victims (Studies 1a and 1b) and perpetrators (Studies 2a-2d). We further document the prevalence of this asymmetry across diverse domains, from everyday language (Study 3) to perceptions in the realms of romantic attraction (Study 4a), crime rates (Study 4b), and business skills (Study 4c). Finally, we demonstrate the asymmetry’s real-world consequences in labor market segregation (Studies 5 and 6). Our findings shed light on the distinct experiences of racism encountered by different racial groups, and more critically, introduce a unifying framework that integrates scattered empirical observations on societal perceptions of Asian people

Brief Mindset Intervention Changes Attitudes but Does Not Improve Working Memory Capacity or Standardized Test Performance

    No full text
There has been extensive research conducted on mindset and grit, involving both experimental and observational methods. However, the findings in the literature remain mixed. This should give educators and researchers pause from an intervention perspective—if we still do not have a good understanding of how mindset works, then more research is needed. We implemented a mindset intervention with undergraduate women to improve cognitive performance measures relevant to academic performance—working memory capacity and standardized test performance in math. To better understand how mindset interventions work, we also examined self-report measures (e.g., pertaining to academic attitudes and belonging) as well as post-intervention behavior. We expected the growth mindset intervention to significantly improve cognitive performance and to cause more positive academic attitudes and attitudinal change. The mindset intervention did change students’ beliefs about ability and also caused students to report higher grit overall (no condition difference), and to feel less belonging in terms of connection to their university—which was not in line with our hypotheses. We also found that the growth mindset intervention had no significant effects on improving WMC or standardized test performance. We discuss the implications of these findings and make suggestions for future work in this area

SEEQ-DE: Konstruktion und Überprüfung einer deutschsprachigen Adaption des Instruments “Student Evaluation of Educational Quality” (Marsh)

    No full text
Construction and Confirmation of a German Adaption of the Student Evaluation of Educational Quality Questionnaire (SEEQ) Abstract: The Student Evaluation of Educational Quality Questionnaire (SEEQ) by Marsh (1982, 2007) was adapted to German and tested using assessments from 76,687 students in 3,660 university courses. Internal consistencies and intraclass correlations indicted a high reliability. Two-level CFAs and ESEM analyses confirmed the separability of all original SEEQ dimensions: learning and overall as product factors, and enthusiasm, organization / clarity, group interaction, individual rapport, breadth, examinations / grading, and assignments / readings as factors on the level of instructional behaviors. In this adaption, we additionally proposed student contributions as an optional factor (the extent to which contributions of fellow students are considered helpful, and whether they are effectively controlled by the instructor), especially for contexts – such as those found in Germany – where student-directed teaching methods are prevalent. Additionally, we expanded the overall course rating by adding two items using a grade scale. These two adaptions are optional, and the scale worked equally well without them. We could confirm measurement invariance across different types of courses. Taken together, our findings indicate that the German adaption of the SEEQ measures teaching quality in accordance with established testing standard
