Making Space in Geographical Analysis
In this commentary we reflect on the potential and power of geographical analysis, as a set of methods, theoretical approaches, and perspectives, to increase our understanding of how space and place matter for women. We emphasize key aspects of the field, including accessibility, urban change, and spatial interaction and behavior, providing a high-level research agenda that indicates a variety of gaps and routes for future research that will not only lead to more equitable and aware solutions to local and global challenges, but also innovative and novel research methods, concepts, and data. We close with a set of gender, representation, and inclusion challenges to our discipline, researchers, and publication outlets
An International, Cross-Sectional Survey of Pediatrics Researchers and Clinicians: Perceptions of Complementary, Alternative, and Integrative Medicine
Complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine (CAIM) encompass a broad array of non-conventional health practices and products used alongside or instead of Western medicine. Ranging from acupuncture to yoga, these therapies have gained popularity due to their holistic approach, patient-centered care, and desire to avoid conventional treatment side effects. In the pediatric realm, CAIM is particularly prevalent, with over 10% of pediatric patients utilizing these methods. This percentage rises substantially among children with chronic illnesses, reaching more than 50%. CAIM adoption spans various conditions, such as cancer (6%-91%), autism spectrum disorder (28%-95%), and gastrointestinal issues. Pediatricians' attitudes toward CAIM are diverse, ranging from openness to incorporation in treatment plans to a lack of knowledge and evidence-based concerns. Such divided opinions impede efforts to integrate CAIM effectively and hinder research progress. To comprehend these perspectives comprehensively, a large-scale international survey is proposed. This survey will encompass both pediatric researchers and clinicians, gathering data across diverse healthcare settings and global regions. By assessing attitudes, barriers, and preferences regarding CAIM, the study aims to illuminate hindrances to evidence-based integration and identify educational needs. With CAIM's growing popularity and its intricate reception within the pediatric medical community, the survey outcomes will hold significance in bridging the gap between conventional and unconventional practices. The results will provide important insights on how clinicians and researchers, including both those familiar or largely unfamiliar with CAIM, interact with these practices and products. Additionally, the study will inform which educational initiatives might be most appealing and relevant to this group
Does depicting consequences of actions in narratives bolsters the formation of propositional beliefs? First results from an experimental approach
We explored (i) whether narratives can influence viewers’ attitudes towards alcohol through evaluative learning and (ii) compared predictions from dual-process and single-process models of evaluative learning.
In study 1, participants had to read vignettes, while they were exposed to TV show excerpts in study 2. Both studies (nstudy1 = 147; nstudy2 = 150) followed a 2 (valence: positive vs negative) x 2 (drinking consequences: yes vs no) study design. Implicit associations and propositional beliefs were then measured by an Implicit Association Test (IAT) and a Relational Responding Task (RRT) respectively. A multilevel meta-regression was conducted to provide cumulative evidence for our hypotheses.
Our first study did not yield robust significant results in the direction of associative or propositional processes. Conversely, the results of study 2 and meta-analytic findings showed stronger evidence for (i) an effect of exposure to narratives on alcohol-related attitudes and (ii) in favor of propositional models. Simply presenting a stimulus within a valenced content had no effect on the IAT or RRT. We conclude that these results are more in line with inferential propositional models of evaluative learning than with dual-process models
Strategic Interdependence and Preferences for Debt Mutualization in the Eurozone
Existing research argues that a “democratic constraint” blocks the path towards fiscal integration in the eurozone: Voters in creditor countries are fundamentally opposed to debt sharing, while voters in debtor countries are unwilling to leave the euro, which constrains the ability of their politicians to negotiate a more equitable distribution of the burden of adjustment. However, this literature neglects that preferences are strategically interdependent across countries and are affected by the type of information processed by individuals. Based on two linked survey experiments in Germany and Italy, conducted at a crucial moment during the COVID-19 pandemic, we show that Germans respond to information that highlights the possibility of a break-up of the euro as a result of Italexit by increasing their support for debt mutualization. In contrast, Italians are more affected by information about the costs of remaining in the euro than of exiting it and drastically reduce their support for the euro if they are told that austerity and structural reforms are required to remain in it. Our results help to explain why German politicians relaxed their hostility to joint debt and agreed to the introduction of the EU’s pandemic recovery fund in 2020
Validation of Chinese version of Exercise Dependence Scale-Revised (EDS-R)
The Exercise Dependence Scale-Revised (EDS-R) has been suggested as screening tool for exercise dependence (ED), however, a validated Chinese version of this instrument is currently lacking. To this end, the present study translated and evaluated the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of the scale. Following a forward-backward translation of the EDS-R, the Chinese version (EDS-C) as well as validated scales assessing associated constructs were administered to a large sample of habitual exercisers (N=1447, 52.4% male) in universities and communities. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was employed and invariance test across gender was carried out. Additionally, internal consistency and test-retest reliability were determined. Furthermore, construct validity was tested by investigating associations of ED with exercise variables and related constructs. We observed that the EDS-C confirmed the original seven-factor structure (TLI = .94, CFI = .95, RMSEA = .068, SRMR = .032) and showed invariance across genders. Moreover, we observed good internal consistency, with Cronbach alpha ranging from 0.73 to 0.93 for sub-scales and a moderate test-retest reliability (r: 0.45-0.82). The construct validity was additionally supported given that higher levels in EDS-C associated with a higher frequency of exercise and higher levels of eating disorder symptoms, body image inflexibility and generalized anxiety symptoms. In summary, EDS-C is a reliable and valid screening tool for ED in Chinese universities as well as communities
Beyond the interpersonal core of Schizotypal Personality and Autism: Associations between autism and schizotypal traits are not merely due to Social Anxiety.
Several lines of research have established overlap between autistic and schizotypal traits but there have been limited attempts to identify variables that might explain this overlap. As both sets of traits are individually associated with social anxiety, we investigated whether social anxiety traits could explain the overlap between them. To this end, the Autism Quotient (AQ), Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire Brief-Revised (SPQ-BR) and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale-Self Report (LSAS-SR) were administered to a non-clinical population of 345 adults. Correlational analyses revealed strong, positive correlations between autistic, schizotypal, and social anxiety traits. After controlling for social anxiety, the association between total AQ and SPQ-BR scores remained modest and significant, suggesting that their association is not simply due to a shared association with social anxiety
Effects of substrate quality on carbon partitioning in a temperate grassland soil as influenced by microbial activity
Using organic amendments, including livestock slurry, in intensively managed agricultural grasslands may potential lead to multiple benefits, including plant nutrient supply to soils and long-term accumulation of soil organic matter. There is increasing interest in the extent to which biological slurry additives (mixtures of selected living or latent microorganisms added to slurry) are able to enhance soil fertility through mobilisation of key elements in the slurry
and in the soil. However, little is known about the impacts of slurries amended with biological additives on carbon (C) partitioning within three pools: respired CO2, microbial biomass C (Cmic) and C retained in the soil. We report data from incubation experiments in which soils
received livestock slurry treated with a commercial biological additive, alongside 14C-labelled carbohydrates of different lability (14C-glucose, 14C-glucose 6-phosphate (G6P), and 14C-cellulose). The aim of this experiment was to understand how slurry that has received a biological additive ultimately affects the partitioning of C within these pools, alongside how
slurry additives influence soil microbial biomass and the priming effect (PE) in soil. The addition of slurry alongside carbohydrates to soil resulted in lower 14C biomass uptake and greater residual 14C activities in soil, as well as to lower cumulative respiration and PE, compared to the corresponding carbohydrate-only treatments. Competition in the soil between the indigenous microbial community and the microbial community associated with slurry is proposed to account for the apparent suppression of biomass uptake of added C-substrate and of cumulative respiration. Our findings also seem to indicate that the addition of a biological additive to slurry resulted in higher cumulative CO2 efflux from soil compared to the unamended slurry, both for glucose and G6P treatments. This suggests that biological slurry additives may have the potential to reduce the suppressive effect of slurry microorganisms on native soil microorganisms
Induction of acute stress through an internet-delivered Trier Social Stress Test as assessed by photoplethysmography on a smartphone
Recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility of administering the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) through the internet, with major implications for promoting international inclusivity in research participation through extending typical sampling procedures beyond traditional geographical boundaries. However, online TSST studies to date are limited by the lack of a control group, which may be particularly problematic for studies administered through video mediated platforms, given evidence these interactions may be inherently stressful due to a minimization of nonverbal cues and overemphasis on facial expression. Furthermore, there is a need for biological measures of stress reactivity that can be fully implemented online, as extant research has relied upon laboratory measures that must be shipped back and forth between laboratory and participant. Here, we test smartphone-based photoplethysmography as a measure of heart rate reactivity to an online variant of the TSST. Results demonstrate significant acceleration in heart rate and self-reported stress and anxiety in the TSST condition relative to a placebo version of the TSST. The placebo procedures lead to a significant increase in self-reported stress and anxiety relative to baseline levels, but this increase was smaller in magnitude than that observed in the TSST condition. These findings highlight the potential for smartphone-based photoplethysmography in internet-delivered studies of cardiac reactivity and demonstrate that it is critical to utilize random assignment to a control or stressor condition when administering acute stress online
The power of Dionysus – Effects of red wine on consciousness: a naturalistic study in a wine bar
There is lack of research on effects of red wine on consciousness when drank in wine bars designed to enhance the pleasurableness of wine drinking experience. Effects of a moderate dose of red wine (≈ 40.98 g of ethanol) on consciousness were examined in a naturalistic study taking place in a wine bar located in one of the most touristic areas of Lisbon, Portugal. One hundred two participants drank in one of three conditions: alone, in dyad, or in groups up to six people. Red wine increased pleasure and arousal, decreased the awareness of time, slowed the subjective passage of time, increased the attentional focus on the present moment, decreased body awareness, slowed thought speed, turned imagination more vivid, and made the environment become more fascinating. Red wine increased insightfulness and originality of thoughts, increased sensations of oneness with the environment, spiritual feelings, all-encompassing love, and profound peace. All changes in consciousness occurred regardless of volunteers drinking alone, in dyad or in group. Men and women did not report different changes in consciousness. Older age correlated with greater increases in pleasure. Younger age correlated with greater increases in fascination with the environment of the wine bar. Drinking wine in a contemporaneous Western environment designed to enhance the pleasurableness of the wine drinking experience may trigger changes in consciousness commonly associated with mystical-type states
