Momentum Periods of Feedback Trading toward Exchange Rate Volatility

    No full text
In this study, researcher provides empirical evidence of the importance of positive feedback trading factor for the behavior of the exchange rate. By relying on the model of the exchange rate Laopodis (2005) which is GARCH augmented feedback model, researcher analyzed autocorrelation parameters and volatility of exchange rates to gain more insight into the characteristics of the exchange rate induced by traders who follow positive feedback trading strategy. The alleged researcher are Positive feedback traders have an influence on the exchange rate volatility of ASEAN Countries and induce negative autocorrelation return during periods of high volatility. Results of the study are during the period 1995-2014, only Singapore that there is positive feedback trading significantly, while in the period 1997-1998 crises, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Brunei, Singapore, there are any positive feedback trading significantly

In defense of epicycles: Embracing complexity in psychological explanations

As simpler scientific theories are widely considered preferable to more convoluted ones, it is plausible (and widely assumed, especially in recent Bayesian models of cognition) that biological learners are also guided by simplicity when acquiring mental representations, and that formal measures of complexity might indicate which learning problems are harder and which ones are easier. However, the history of science suggests that simpler scientific theories are not necessarily more useful if more convoluted ones make calculations easier. Here, I suggest that a similar conclusion applies to mental representations. Using case studies from perception, associative learning, word and rule learning as well as causal inference, I show that formal measures of complexity critically depend on assumptions about the underlying representational and processing primitives, and are generally unrelated to what is actually easy to learn and process in humans. When simpler hypotheses are preferred, they are preferred because they are also easier to process. Empirically viable notions of complexity thus need to build on the representational and processing primitives that are available to actual learners even if this leads to formally complex explanations

Phonological variation and prosodic representation: clitics in Portuguese-Veneto contact

    No full text
In a variety of Brazilian Portuguese in contact with Veneto, variable vowel reduction in clitic position can be partially accounted for by the phonotactic profile of clitic structures. We show that, when phonotactic profile is controlled for, vowel reduction is statistically more frequent in non-pronominal than in pronominal clitics, which indicates that these clitic types are represented in separate prosodic domains. We propose that this difference in frequency of reduction between clitic types is only possible due to contact with Veneto, which, unlike standard BP, does not exhibit vowel reduction in clitic position. Contact thus provides speakers with the possibility of producing clitic vowels without reduction, and the resulting variation is used to signal prosodic distinctions between clitic types. We show that the difference in frequency of reduction is larger for older speakers, who are more proficient in Veneto and use the language regularly

The Usual Suspects: How psychological motives and thinking styles predict the endorsement of well-known and COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs

    No full text
Research on belief in conspiracy theories identified many predictors, but often failed to investigate them together. In the present study, we tested how the most important predictors of beliefs in conspiracy theories explain endorsing COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 conspiracy theories, and conspiracy mentality. Apart from these three measures of conspiratorial thinking, participants (N = 354) completed several measures of epistemic, existential, and social psychological motives, as well as cognitive processing variables. While many predictors had significant correlations, only three consistently explained conspiratorial beliefs when included in one model: higher spirituality (the most important predictor), higher narcissism, and lower analytical thinking. Compared to the other two conspiratorial measures, predictors less explained belief in COVID-19 conspiracy theories, but this depended on items’ content. We conclude that the same predictors apply to belief in both COVID and non-COVID conspiracies, and identify spirituality as an important, but previously overlooked contributor to such beliefs

Development of synaesthetic consistency: repeated autonomous engagement with graphemes and colours leads to consistent associations

    No full text
Synaesthetic consistency is the hallmark of synaesthesia and plays an important role in the definition and validation of synaesthesia. It has been hypothesised that the acquisition of initially unspecified synaesthetic associations is based on consolidation processes. Thus, we investigated in non-synaesthetes whether repeatedly engaging with grapheme-colour associations mimics the developmental trajectory of synaesthetic consistency in genuine grapheme-colour synaesthesia. This was the case for the two tested experimental groups, irrespective of whether they were instructed to memorize their chosen associations, but not for the passive control group. Moreover, consolidated associations of the experimental groups resembled those frequently found in genuine synaesthesia. Furthermore, the acquisition of consistent grapheme-colour associations resulted in a transfer of benefits to performance in recognition memory for abstract stimuli, as also found in genuine synaesthesia. Our findings suggest that consistent synaesthetic associations are based on consolidation processes due to repeated engagement with graphemes and colours

Democracy & Demography: Intersectional Issues in Politics

    No full text
Democracy and Demography: Intersectional dimensions of political conflicts Abstract Feminist theory revealed liberal democracy as gendered masculine in an intersectional way that privileges racial-ethnic and economic power, enforces heteronormativity, and constructs gender-binary citizenship. Merely reformed to accommodate women, brotherhood-breadwinner democracies now face deeper challenges. The second demographic transition undermines the hegemonic quality of binary gender relations, and organizes political conflict on an axis of reproductive politics. Germany’s Green and AfD parties exemplify opposite ends of this axis. Intersectional clusters of issues now reflect ideals that de-masculinize democracy, while reactionary populism re-politicizes masculinity to defend the family-state relations of the breadwinner-brotherhood gender system

Following the Master in Integrated Environmental Management, held at the European School for Advanced Studies of IUSS (University Institute of Advanced Studies), University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy, I worked as a trainee at the consulting company Eco Auditing Ltd. Genoa, Italy. Eco Auditing is an Italian leading environmental consultancy to public and private institutions and it is specialised in environmental certifications, with expert consultants to assist in the design and implementation of environmental management systems applied to public bodies. Specifically, I was interested in the environmental certification of the municipality of Maratea, in the province of Potenza, in compliance with UNI EN ISO 14001

Phoneme Identification in Bilingual Children in Singapore – A preregistered investigation using the CROWN Game

    No full text
Phoneme identification is critically involved in alphabetic reading, and weak skills in phoneme perception are known to correspond to the development of reading skills in children around the age of reading instruction. However, current models of phoneme perception have been established in monolingual populations, and these relationships may not hold for bilingual children. We developed a phoneme identification task, the CROWN Game, as part of a comprehensive assessment package for identifying potential reading difficulties. In the task, children perform a phoneme identification task, using familiar words with onset consonants spanning a voice-onset time continuum from /b/ to /p/ (-60ms to 90ms). 138 English-Chinese bilinguals in Singapore kindergartens were tested on phoneme perception for English words ‘beach’ and ‘peach’. We fitted individual responses to a psychometric function and measured individual VOT threshold and the slope of the transition between categories. The task showed a wide spread of scores and good split-half reliability, suggesting the CROWN game is suitable for identifying stable individual differences between children. In a preregistered subgroup analysis, we examined whether a child’s language background (input ratios and age of acquisition) influenced phoneme perception. GLMMs showed no influence of language exposure on phoneme perception in this task. This suggests the CROWN Game, as part of a broader assessment package, is valid for use with bilingual children with different rates of exposure to their languages in evaluating phoneme perception skills relevant to reading development

Why Online does not Equal Offline: Comparing Online and Real-World Political Support Among Politicians.

    No full text
Are offline political relations and endorsements established or maintained with online interactions? We examine the external validity of data on political behavior exhibited online and compare it to offline behavior. We overlay two data sets on political support among members of the Swiss parliament to estimate the explanatory power of online endorsements on offline cosponsorship signatures among members, using a gHypEG network regression model. Whereas offline support behavior is driven by a broad range of factors, such as network and homophily effects, online endorsement is less diverse. Our findings show that online endorsement is predominantly driven by partisanship, calling into question the use of online political behavior data to study real-world politics

Nested or Networked? Future Directions for Ecological Systems Theory

    No full text
Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory (EST) is among the most widely adopted theoretical frameworks for studying individuals in ecological contexts. In its traditional formulation, different levels of ecological systems are viewed as nested within one another. In this paper, we use Simmel’s notion of intersecting social circles and Bronfenbrenner’s earlier writing on social networks to develop an alternative “networked” model that instead views ecological systems as an overlapping arrangement of structures, each directly or indirectly connected to the others by the direct and indirect social interactions of their participants. We redefine each of the systems discussed by EST – micro, meso, exo, macro, and chrono – based on patterns of social interaction, and then illustrate how this alternative model might be applied in the classic context of the developing child. We conclude by discussing future directions for how the networked model of EST can be applied as a conceptual framework, arguing that this approach offers developmental researchers with a more precise and flexible way to think about ecological contexts. We also offer some initial suggestions for moving a networked EST model from theory to method
