    Prevalence of sexual abuse in men with mental illness: a Bayesian meta-analysis

    Background Patients suffering from mental illness (MI) have a higher risk of being victims of sexual abuse, yet few studies investigate the proportion of male victims in this population. This underrepresentation in research is a barrier in understanding the negative outcomes associated with sexual abuse in men. Aims We aim to estimate the prevalence of sexual abuse in male MI patients, both for recent (past year) and lifetime abuse. Methods In order to model the prevalences and heterogeneity arising from reports, we use Bayesian random-effects estimation, along with additional meta-regression analyses to investigate differences in results arising from the design choices used by individual studies. We estimate separate prevalences for mixed-diagnosis samples, substance abuse samples and samples reporting specifically on intimate partner violence in MI patients. Results Victimisation rates were estimated to be high across all samples. Lifetime victimisation for mixed-diagnosis samples was estimated at 21%, for substance abuse samples 13%, and for mixed-diagnosis samples reporting on intimate partner violence at 5%. Past year victimisation for mixed-diagnosis samples was 4%. Considerable heterogeneity was present across all study groups, particularly so for the substance abuse sample. Discussion Sexual abuse prevalence in MI samples was found to be much higher than for men in the general population (1-7%). These results provide important implications about the proportion of undetected or untreated sexually abused men there are in clinical practice

    Celebrity status, sex, and variation in psychopathy predicts judgements of and proclivity to generate and distribute deepfake pornography

    With the advent of means to generate and disseminate fake, sexualised images of others for the purposes of financial gain, harassment, or sexual gratification, there is a need to assess and understand the public’s awareness and judgements of said behaviour. In two independently-sampled studies, we used moderation (Study 1) and linear mixed effects (Study 2) analyses to investigate whether judgements of deepfaking differed as a function of victim status (celebrity, non-celebrity), victim and participant demographics, and image use (sharing, own sexual gratification), whilst controlling for the potential covariates of psychopathy and beliefs about a just world. We consistently observed more lenient judgements of deepfake generation and dissemination for victims who were celebrities and male, and when images were created for self-sexual gratification rather than being shared. Moreover, lenient judgements, as well as proclivity to act were predicted by greater levels of psychopathy. We discuss our findings in the context of needing to qualitatively understand the general public’s rationale for said disparity in judgements, as well as identifying and combating barriers to disclose victimisation.     Can people detect the trustworthiness of strangers based on their facial appearance?

    Although cooperation can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes, cooperative actions only pay off for the individual if others can be trusted to cooperate as well. Identifying trustworthy interaction partners is therefore a central challenge in human social life. How do people navigate this challenge? Prior work suggests that people rely on the facial appearance of strangers to judge their trustworthiness. However, the question of whether these judgments are actually accurate remains debated. The present research examines accuracy in trustworthiness detection from faces and three moderators proposed by previous research. We investigate whether people show above-chance accuracy (a) when they make trust decisions vs. provide explicit trustworthiness ratings, (b) when judging male vs. female counterparts, and (c) when rating cropped images (with non-facial features removed) vs. uncropped images. Results of two studies showed that incentivized trust decisions (Study 1, n = 131 university students) and incentivized predictions of counterparts’ trustworthiness (Study 2, n = 266 university students) were unrelated to the actual trustworthiness of counterparts. Moreover, accuracy was not moderated by stimulus type (cropped vs. uncropped faces) or counterparts’ gender. Overall, these findings suggest that people are unable to detect the trustworthiness of strangers based on their facial appearance, when this is the only information available to them

    Innovative digitale Versorgungsformen zur Personalisierung der stationsäquivalenten Behandlung in der alltäglichen Lebenswelt bei schweren psychischen Erkrankungen [Innovative digital forms of service delivery for personalized crisis resolution and home treatment for people with severe mental health problems]

    Die stationsäquivalente psychiatrische Behandlung (StäB) wurde 2018 als neue Krankenhausleistung für Menschen eingeführt, die die Indikation für eine stationäre Behandlung erfüllen. Die rasanten Fortschritte im Bereich der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologie bieten völlig neue Chancen für innovative digitale Versorgungsangebote wie telemedizinische, eHealth oder mHealth Verfahren. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es einen umfassenden Überblick über neue digitale Versorgungsformen zu geben, die zur Personalisierung der StäB in der alltäglichen Lebenswelt bei schweren psychischen Erkrankungen beitragen und somit klinische und soziale Outcomes verbessern sowie direkte und indirekte Kosten reduzieren könnten. Es lassen sich vier primäre digitale Versorgungsformen identifizieren, die in diesem Sinne in der StäB gewinnbringend genutzt werden könnten: (1) Kommunikation, Behandlungskontinuität und -flexibilität durch Online-Chat und Videotelefonie; (2) Monitoring von Symptomen und Verhaltensweisen in Echtzeit durch Anwendung des ambulatorischen Assessments (Engl. Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA)); (3) Nutzung von multimodalen EMA-Daten für die Generierung und Darbietung von personalisiertem Feedback über subjektives Erleben und Verhaltensmuster sowie (4) auf Person, Moment und Kontext zugeschnittene, adaptive ambulatorische Interventionen (Engl. Ecological Momentary Interventions (EMIs)). Neue digitale Versorgungsformen haben erhebliches Potential die Effektivität und Kosteneffektivität der aufsuchenden fachpsychiatrischen und psychotherapeutischen Behandlung zu steigern. Ein wichtiger nächster Schritt besteht nun darin, die Anwendung dieser Versorgungsformen im Bereich der StäB zu modellieren und deren Qualität aus Patientensicht, Sicherheit, und initiale Prozess- und Ergebnisqualität sowie Implementierungsbedingungen sorgfältig zu untersuchen. Abstract: Ward-equivalent treatment (StäB), a form of crisis resolution and home treatment in Germany, has been introduced in 2018 as a new model of mental health service delivery for people with an indication for inpatient care. The rapid progress in the field of information and communication technology offers entirely new opportunities for innovative digital mental health care such as telemedicine, eHealth, or mHealth interventions. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of novel digital forms of service delivery in the daily lives of help-seeking individuals for personalized delivery of StäB that may contribute to improving clinical and social outcomes as well as reducing direct and indirect costs. Four primary digital forms of service delivery have been identified that can be used for personalized delivery of StäB: (1) communication, continuity of care, and flexibility through online chat and video call; (2) monitoring of symptoms and behaviour in real-time through ecological momentary assessment (EMA); (3) use of multimodal EMA data to generate and offer personalized feedback on subjective experience and behavioural patterns as well as (4) adaptive ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) tailored to the person, moment, and context in daily life. New digital forms of service delivery have considerable potential to increase the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of crisis resolution, home treatment, and assertive outreach. An important next step is to model and initially evaluate these novel digital forms of service delivery in the context of StäB and carefully investigate their quality from the user perspective, safety, feasibility, initial process and outcome quality as well as barriers and facilitators of implementation

    The social basis of referential communication: Speakers construct reference based on listeners' expected visual search.

    A foundational assumption of human communication is that speakers should say as much as necessary, but no more. In referential communication, the pressure to be efficient is typically formalized as an egocentric bias where speakers aim to minimize production costs. While intuitive, this view has failed to explain why people routinely produce redundant adjectives, particularly color words, or why this phenomenon varies cross-linguistically. Here we propose an alternative view of referential efficiency, whereby speakers create referential expressions designed to facilitate the listener's visual search for the referent as they process words in real time. We present a computational model of our account, the Incremental Communicative Efficiency (ICE) model, which generates referential expressions by considering listeners' expected visual search during online language processing. Our model captures a number of known effects in the literature, including cross-linguistic differences in speakers' propensity to over-specify. Moreover, our model predicts graded acceptability judgments with quantitative accuracy, systematically outperforming an alternative, brevity-based model. Our findings suggest that reference production is best understood as driven by a cooperative goal to help the listener identify the intended referent, rather than by an egocentric effort to minimize utterance length

    The values of survival: Socio-cultural values predict COVID-19-related mortality

    Preexisting conditions affect disease susceptibility. Here, I show that socio-cultural values are population-level risk factors for disease. Using data from the World Values Survey, I show that, between 2 weeks and 6 months after the first COVID-19-related death in a country, COVID-19-related mortality is increased in countries endorsing values related to political participation, but decreased in countries with more trust in institutions and materialistic orientations. After controlling for income, age, urbanicity, smoking, overweight, private health expenditure and lockdown delay, these socio-cultural values were consistent across country-sets, reduced prediction errors by up to 52% and explained up to 68% of inter-country variability. They were relatively specific to COVID-19-related mortality. I could not identify values predicting general health outcomes, and values predicting increased COVID-19-related mortality predicted decreased mortality due to other causes like environmental-related mortality, explaining up to 90% of inter-country variability. Socio-cultural values might be specific predictors of health outcomes

    Failure to Detect Metric Measurement Non-Invariance: How Manifest Residual Variances, Indicator Communalities, and Sample Size affect the χ2-Test Statistic

    We investigate the effects of manifest residual variances, indicator communalities, and sample size on the χ2-test statistic of the metric measurement invariance model when the model is misspecified, i.e., there is at least one population loading that violates metric measurement invariance. First, we demonstrate the choice of the scaling method does not affect the model’s χ2-test statistic. Afterward, we demonstrate that the χ2-test statistic relates inversely to manifest residual variances, whereas sample size and χ2-test statistic show a positive relation. Moreover, we consider indicator communality as a key factor for the size of the χ2-test statistic. In this context, we introduce the concept of signal-to-noise ratio as a tool for studying the effects of manifest residual variance and indicator communality and demonstrate its use with the example. Finally, we discuss the limitations and the practical implications for the analysis of metric measurement invariance models

    Computer vision, machine learning, and the promise of phenomics in ecology and evolutionary biology

    For centuries, ecologists and evolutionary biologists have used images such as drawings, paintings and photographs to record and quantify the shapes and patterns of life. With the advent of digital imaging, biologists continue to collect image data at an ever-increasing rate. This immense body of data provides insight into a wide range of biological phenomena, including phenotypic trait diversity, population dynamics, mechanisms of divergence and adaptation, and evolutionary change. However, the rate of image acquisition frequently outpaces our capacity to manually extract meaningful information from images. Moreover, manual image analysis is low-throughput, difficult to reproduce, and typically measures only a few traits at a time. This has proven to be an impediment to the growing field of phenomics - the study of many phenotypic dimensions together. Computer vision (CV), the automated extraction and processing of information from digital images, provides the opportunity to alleviate this longstanding analytical bottleneck. In this review, we illustrate the capabilities of CV as an efficient and comprehensive method to collect phenomic data in ecological and evolutionary research. First, we briefly review phenomics, arguing that ecologists and evolutionary biologists can effectively capture phenomic-level data by taking pictures and analyzing them using CV. Next we describe the primary types of image-based data, review CV approaches for extracting them (including techniques that entail machine learning and others that do not), and identify the most common hurdles and pitfalls. Finally, we highlight recent successful implementations and promising future applications of CV in the study of phenotypes. In anticipation that CV will become a basic component of the biologist’s toolkit, our review is intended as an entry point for ecologists and evolutionary biologists that are interested in extracting phenotypic information from digital images

    Adolescent risk-taking likelihood, risk perceptions, and benefit perceptions across domains

    Adolescents are often described as notorious risk-takers. However, adolescents do not always take risks and risk-taking may vary across risk-taking domains. Furthermore, there are large individual differences. Certain clinical groups, such as adolescents with ADHD, may be more likely to take risks. In two studies we examined these domain-specific and individual differences using the adolescent Domain-Specific Risk-Taking (DOSPERT)-questionnaire, which assesses adolescents’ self-reported risk-taking likelihood, perceptions of risk, and perceptions of benefits (‘returns’). Furthermore, we examined how risk-taking likelihood is informed by risk- and benefit-perceptions, i.e., ‘risk-return’ weighing. In a community-sample study (N=361, 12-25 years), we tested the domain-specificity across age, and observed a peak in risk-taking likelihood in late adolescence in the Health-Safety domain only. Perceived benefits were heightened, and perceived risks attenuated, in mid-to-late adolescence for Health-Safety, Recreational, and Ethical risks. In a second study, we compared boys with ADHD (N=81) and controls (N=99; 12-20 years). Adolescents with ADHD rated higher risk-taking likelihoods for Social risks only. Risk-return models in both studies revealed that effects of perceived risks (Health-Safety) and benefits (Recreational) on risk-taking likelihood were most pronounced and varied across age. Together, adolescents’ risk-taking likelihood is impacted by risks and returns, age-related differences, and should be studied domain-specifically

    Questionable Research Practices and Open Science in Quantitative Criminology

    Objectives. Questionable research practices (QRPs) lead to incorrect research results and contribute to irreproducibility in science. Researchers and institutions have proposed open science practices (OSPs) to improve the detectability of QRPs and the credibility of science. We examine the prevalence of QRPs and OSPs in criminology, and researchers’ opinions of those practices. Methods. We administered an anonymous survey to authors of articles published in criminology journals. Respondents self-reported their own use of 10 QRPs and 5 OSPs. They also estimated the prevalence of use by others, and reported their attitudes toward the practices. Results. QRPs and OSPs are both common in quantitative criminology, about as common as they are in other fields. Criminologists who responded to our survey support using QRPs in some circumstances, but are even more supportive of using OSPs. We did not detect a significant relationship between methodological training and either QRP or OSP use. Support for QRPs is negatively and significantly associated with support for OSPs. Perceived prevalence estimates for some practices resembled a uniform distribution, suggesting criminologists have little knowledge of the proportion of researchers that engage in certain questionable practices. Conclusions. Most quantitative criminologists in our sample use QRPs, and many use multiple QRPs. The substantial prevalence of QRPs raises questions about the validity and reproducibility of published criminological research. We found promising levels of OSP use, albeit at levels lagging what researchers endorse. The findings thus suggest that additional reforms are needed to decrease QRP use and increase the use of OSPs
