Macrofungi in Urban and Rural Forests
Get PDFResearch in 1993, 2003, and 2013 showed high rates of tree mortality and low rates of recruitment (new trees) in Portland, Oregon’s Forest Park. Three control sites in the Mount Hood National Forest were added in 2013; research from 2018 showed the control sites had significantly more live trees, seedlings and saplings than urban sites. Last summer we surveyed the forests in Forest Park and near control sites for macrofungi. All fungi were identified to genus, the nearest substrate (e.g., log or soil), and the nearest vascular plant species. We compared the fungi we identified to those reported as mycorrhizal with vascular plants in the literature
Relationship Between Thermal Conductivity and Free Electrons in Metal
No full textAn experiment was designed and conducted to explore the relationship between thermal conductivity with free electrons in metal. In the experiment, copper, iron, aluminum, and titanium rods with close diameters were used to carry out the experiment. Each rod was heated up by a heat unit at one end while cooled on the other end with a heat sink to maintain a steady state. DC current was applied to rods in the direction along, as well as against, the heat flow. Thermal conductivities were measured in these two situations for each rod. Get PDFThis dissertation project was a qualitative case study of one writing center for online graduate students, the Graduate Writing Center at Concordia University–Portland. This study focused on synchronous interactions between peer writing consultants and online doctoral students to determine if the synchronous writing support sessions were a space where online doctoral students experienced affective support and socialization experiences. In this research, I analyzed four document sets: seven transcripts of synchronous sessions conducted via Zoom, interviews with three writing consultants and six online doctoral students, anonymous responses to appointment feedback surveys, and my fieldnotes

No full textThis thesis explores a conversation between the “self” and Filipino culture to examine the ways the Filipino diaspora exists in literature amongst colonization and trauma. Through literary texts spanning across time and geographical locations, like Elaine Castillo’s America Is Not the Heart and Jessica Hagedorn\u27s Dogeaters, I interrogate the cultural and psychic meanings associated with the concept of home within the context of these hybrid histories. By examining the neo-canonical literature of some of these authors, I interrogate their sense of self, voices and visions via the languages, symbols, cultural frameworks and emotions that are prevalent within the literary texts and my own auto-ethnographic explorations.
Within the auto-ethnographic representation, I examine what it means to be Local Filipino—a Filipino identity emerging from the dual colonization of Hawai’i during the plantation era. By looking at these trajectories and cultural landscapes within these literary and creative spaces, this thesis explores a discourse that aims to speak about hybrid Filipino identity, home, place, and history within a postcolonial context
