    Wild Nights - Wild Nights!

    This semester I got the amazing opportunity to compose an art song for Arwen Myers and Susan McDaniel. It was a wonderful and extremely educational experience to compose and workshop my piece with professionals and to be able to experience the spectacular performance video that was created. My art song was a setting of Wild Nights - Wild Nights!, a poem by Emily Dickinson. I tried to lean into the theme of Wild in my piece, using many varying time signatures, a feeling of atonality, and a large range in both the vocal and piano parts. I also tried to use text painting throughout the piece to help bring the text alive and emphasize the poetry in this musical setting. The final art song, Wild Nights - Wild Nights! for solo soprano and piano accompaniment, performed by Arwen Myers and Susan McDaniel, is just over two minutes in length and can be viewed above

    Resisting the News: Engaged Audiences, Alternative Media, and Popular Critique of Journalism

    Resisting the News brings together unique insights from activists and alternative-media users to offer a distinctive perspective on the problems of journalism today—and how to fix them. Using critical-cultural theory and, in particular, the conceptual frameworks of ritual communication and interpretive communities, this book examines how audiences filter their interpretations of mainstream news through the prisms of their identities and experiences with alternative media and political protest. Jennifer Rauch gives voice to alternative-media audiences and illuminates the cultural resources, values, assumptions, critical skills, and discursive strategies through which they make sense of their news environments. Drawing on a 15-year research project, Rauch employs a variety of qualitative, quantitative, and quasi-ethnographic methods, including focus groups, media-use diaries, close-ended surveys, and open-ended questions, to paint a layered portrait of liberal and conservative critiques of journalism.     Contact Barriers and Doping in 2D Field Effect Transistors

    A new class of materials, known as 2D materials, and the devices made from them, have become one of the hottest areas of physics research. The device performance is commonly characterized using macroscopic current-voltage measurements, however, the factors limiting performance are microscopic in nature—including contact barriers, uniformity of electrostatic doping, contamination, and small defects like holes and tears in the 2D sheet. This project employed our state-of-the art Asylum Cypher Atomic Force Microscope to image both the topography of films and devices, and to map their electronic response. This project focused on characterization of the electronic response in both AM and FM Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (AM-KPFM and FM-KPFM), as well as in conductance microscopy, so that these techniques can be applied to studying 2D devices. We explored a number of procedural steps, cantilevers, probe tips, and techniques, to improve the repeatability and the quantitative nature of the signal response. Although the microscope is capable of FM-KPFM, this mode was not incorporated into the software, and so code and procedures were developed. Results show a linear correlation between AM-KPFM signal and applied bias to the 2D device. This is also true for FM-KPFM signals. These results will allow for better microscopic characterization of electronic materials, including 2D materials and devices

    A smart trashcan has been designed which can bring convenience to people for throwing their garbage away during the COVID-19 pandemic. A prototype is made from cardboard to demonstrate its function. This trashcan can sense people who are coming and leaving, and it can open and close automatically. The trashcan is powered by solar energy. A solar panel is mounted on top of the trashcan supporter. This design is specifically for use in China

    In this article we assess Śāntarakṣita’s and Kamalaśīla’s critique of the Advaita Vedānta theory of self. We provide a translation of the verses 328-335 of the commentary titled Tattvasaṃgrahapañjikā, which was composed by Kamalaśīla on Śāntarakṣita’s Tattvasaṃgraha. We present Śāntarakṣita’s and Kamalaśīla’s views of a self and also explain the Advaita Vedānta theory based on the texts of Śaṅkara. It is concluded in the article that Śāntarakṣita and Kamalaśīla failed to consider the most likely Advaitin replies to their objections, especially the reply that cognitions of objects are illusory rather than real modifications, since the critique assumed that they were real modifications

    The Maṇi bka’ ’bum is a ‘‘revealed scripture’’ (gter ma) that claims to be a testament of the ancient Tibetan king Srong btsan sgam po, traditionally believed to have been an incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, the tutelary deity of Tibet. The Maṇi bka’ ’bum includes two narratives that resemble the Vessantara Jātaka, which has spread widely in Asia as a Buddhist tale about a former birth of the Śākyamuni Buddha as a generous prince called Vessantara, who gives away even his wife and children. The Maṇi bka’ ’bum contains stories of King Srong bstan sgam po’s former births, one of which is as a prince named ’Jig rten dbang phyug (Skt. Lokeśvara), who gives away his two wives, who are to be identified as a Nepalese wife named Khri btsun and a Chinese wife named Kong jo, along with his two children. The article looks into possible sources of the two versions of this story in the Maṇi bka’ ’bum, finding parallels in the Rgyal bu Don grub kyi mdo. Consideration is also given to the Fifth Dalai Lama’s use of the Maṇi bka’ ’bum’s accounts for his own birth story, the ’Khrung rab

    Profiling the Current Youth Athlete: The Measurement and Evaluation of Athleticism in Today’s Youth

    The original purpose of this grant’s research was to create a standardized system of measuring and evaluating current youth levels of physical literacy and athleticism. Due to COVID-19 restrictions throughout 2020, we were unable to obtain IRB approval to test our protocols with youth athletes in the surrounding Portland-McMinnville area as we were unable to meet with large groups of youth athletes face-to-face in indoor settings to run our research protocols. Instead, we pivoted and conducted pilot data with our Linfield varsity student-athletes due to our ability and already-invested time and energy with them through team-wide organized strength and conditioning sessions. We were able to lead 13 varsity teams through a battery of tests examining their speed, strength, stamina, and cognitive abilities. We were then able to run statistical analyses to provide individual athletic profiles for the coaches of each of the teams, providing them insight on their athletes’ physical limitations, as well as ranking on how they compare on each test across all varsity student-athletes on campus. The data collected will then be used to “trickle down” to high school and youth athletes to provide long-term tracking of quantitative athleticism as they aspire to meet athletic marks seen in NCAA Division-III athletes

    This project describes how to design a smart trashcan, which is especially important to help people conveniently and safely dispose of their garbage at this special time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, this design is for a trashcan which can help people reduce their contact with possible sources of infection and ensure a healthy environment for the community. This project has gone through two significant revisions, which are described in detail. I compare the pros and cons for several design revisions that were made after modeling the trash can in SolidWorks and considering its operation. These include the choice of the lid material and the addition of a triangle-shaped supporter. From my project, designers can know some factors to consider in designing a community smart trashcan. Some common design techniques and the methods of using CAD are also presented, so that they can be easily utilized by other scholars
