Caring for the Climate Changed: Health, Environment, and Policy for the Common Good
The influences of a changing world climate are not restricted by political or geographic borders, and human health is substantially impacted by quality of our environment. Environmental degradation has a disproportionate impact on persons with less immediate access to financial and social power. This presentation by Dr. Gary Laustsen (professor of nursing at Linfield University) looks at some of the health impacts of climate change, air and water quality, and toxic chemical exposure. Examples from Oregon demonstrate the need for local engagement. Recommended actions by social and healthcare leaders include work to build environmental health literacy and empowerment, advocacy for regulatory protection and enforcement, and environmental engagement within healthcare, educational, and social systems
Bhikṣuṇī Śailā’s Rebuttal of Māra’s Substantialist view: The Chariot Simile in a Sūtra Quotation in the Abhidharmakośopāyikā-ṭīkā
This study takes up the first occurrence in Buddhist literature of an illustrative simile comparing the five aggregates (Sanskrit skandhas/Pali khandhas) to a chariot (ratha), found in an early discourse attested in different parallel versions (SN 5.10, SĀ 1202, SĀ2 218, Up 9014). It introduces and translates the version extant in the Abhidharmakośopāyikā-ṭīkā (Up 9014), and then comments on this initial formulation of the chariot simile in light of the ancient Indian background against which the early Buddhist texts and teachings emerged. The implications of the distinctive Buddhist use of the chariot imagery in this context appears to be less to the forefront in subsequent uses of the simile in later Buddhist tradition, which tend to shift focus on intra-Buddhist scholastic preoccupations and debates concerning the ontological standing of the person or sentient beings in general. These later developments will be discussed in a follow-up article
Development and Optimization of Copper Catalyzed Alkylboron Homocoupling
Student researcher Abbie Northrop spent the majority of the summer working on developing an analytical method with which she could reliably determine the degree of success or failure of her experiments that she performed later in the summer. The instrument that Abbie used is called a Gas Chromatograph (GC) and it requires a lengthy process of calibration and standardization in order to use it to collect useful data about chemical reactions. Abbie succeeded in her goal of developing a protocol for the use of this instrument in her research. A secondary goal of this part of the project was to have Abbie develop competency on this instrument since a GC is one of the most commonly used scientific instruments in chemistry labs worldwide. This part of the project took us longer than expected due to a large amount of troubleshooting we had to do on the instrument but that ultimately added value to her education.
The second major portion of Abbie’s project involved the early part of what is called conditions screening in chemistry. We are trying to develop a new method of forming carbon-carbon chemical bonds. Some closely related bond forming reactions exist but since we are trying to develop a truly new reaction we have to explore a large number of variables to find a combination that leads to a highly efficient and broadly applicable reaction. With an analytical technique in place Abbie has begun the process of running multitudes of experiments that differ from one another by only one variable. In this way we can fine tune all of the pieces of the chemical reaction using a relatively simple model system. This part of the project is very much “in progress” and Abbie is continuing to finish work on this part of the project during the academic year.
The third part of Abbie’s project involves synthesizing key chemicals that will be part of her conditions screening process or will be used in closely related experiments. Abbie worked on this part of the project in parallel to the other two parts and made good progress towards synthesizing some key boron-containing molecules that we plan to use in the new bond forming reaction

Stroke Play: The Effect of Strokes Gained & Traditional Golf Measurements on PGA Tour Golfers’ Performance
This study estimates the qualitative and quantitative effect of strokes gained on PGA Tour golfers’ performance. This performance is measured as the percentage of the total purse won at PGA Tour events for golfers making the cut. A cross-section model for 2,511 golfers across 33 tournaments in the 2018-2019 season is employed. The explanatory variables are the four strokes-gained measures: strokes gained off-the-tee (OTT), approach-to-the-green (APP), around-the-green (ARG), and putting (PUTT). The empirical results suggest that all four measures contribute to performance, with APP having the largest quantitative effect. Additionally, strokes gained explains more of golfers’ performance than traditional golf measurements
Feminine Archetype of Musical Drama: A Multimedia Presentation
Ever since the Renaissance, representations of female characters in musical drama have been cast to a select number of archetypes; however, they are still commonly found in opera and musical theatre shows today. Whether they be performed by sopranos, mezzos, altos, or any other voice type, they are a concept commonly found in the dramatic and musical world.
While these archetypes can be seen as very rigid, they are an important tool in studying musical drama by providing concise and simplified roles to explore and expand upon, including factors such as social class and historical background. Like a composer using sequences and musical tools, women performers are able to take control of these stock characters, oftentimes created by men based on the stereotypical or ideological roles of women.
There are many distinct archetypes that can be identified and explored; however, for the purposes of this essay, I will concentrate on Columbina, the Ingenue, the Jealous Lover, the Femme Fatale, and the Madwoman
An Analysis of College Graduation Rates
Not only is an institution’s graduation rate closely looked at by prospective students, it also can have an impact on the amount of public funding the school receives. Because of this, institutions are always looking for ways to improve the rate at which their students graduate. The purpose of this presentation is to estimate a model that will evaluate which factors have the greatest effect on graduation rates among private, baccalaureate institutions in the United States. The explanatory variables will be grouped into three categories: cohort characteristics, institutional characteristics, and institutional actions. Using panel data, the effects of each of these variables were tested, and the results suggest that while some influential factors are outside of the institutions\u27 control, there are actions that schools can take to improve their graduation rates
Peer-led Bystander Intervention Training: Best Practices and Application
Sexual assault is a reality in college campuses and for college students. Amongst the pressures to succeed academically and find a job, students are also confronted with the possibility that they or someone they know is likely to experience sexual assault. One of the most commonly promoted strategies to reduce the occurrence of sexual assault is bystander intervention, and, as such, numerous bystander intervention training systems have been developed. For our research project, we asked the question, “What characteristics of bystander intervention training are most effective?” Our investigation included an examination of the characteristics of the training, the environment, the trainee, and the types of interventions. Specifically, we focused on the effect of a peer-led, leadership-based bystander intervention training on a small college campus in terms of increasing knowledge of resources, utilization of resources, and actual behavioral intervention
Infectious Disease Propagation Modeling
We present several computational models of infectious disease propagation. We discuss both stochastic network models and deterministic differential equations models. The primary focus is on variations of the SIR compartmental differential equations model. We attempt to determine the characteristics of a pandemic that lead to endemic diseases and explore how individual mitigation strategies affect the spread of infectious diseases
