No full textThis interview is an oral history conducted by Rich Schmidt and Matt Hodges with Dennis Anderson. This interview took place over Zoom on July 21, 2021.
The interview was conducted as part of Linfield University\u27s project celebrating the 65th anniversary of The Streak. Linfield\u27s football team has not had a losing record in a season since 1955, an unprecedented run of success. These interviews are with people who contributed to the 1956 Linfield team that won the conference championship and began The Streak.

Securing Pint Glasses on Serving Trays With Magnetic Attachments
No full textIt is extremely common for servers in the restaurant industry to have pint glasses slip off their serving tray, wasting both time and money for the restaurant. I have designed a sleeve attachment that will clip on to the bottom of a pint glass. The metal sleeve attachment will be attracted to a magnet placed into the serving tray. This increases the normal force of the pint glass, resulting in an increase in the friction force between the tray and sleeve attachment, and helping secure the glass to the tray. In order to optimize the design, the value of the static friction coefficient of the materials, as well as the value and influence of the magnet force on the object was measured. This information was used to determine the best material to use in the product, and to predict the effectiveness of the design in preventing the sliding of the glass. Ultimately, a wooden tray and an ABS plastic sleeve were chosen for the design, and a prototype was produced and tested
Light Rail Transportation and Its Impact on Home Values
Get PDFThis study seeks to understand the implications on home values due to proximity to light rail transportation. My research utilizes 150 single-family home sales occurring during the month of September 2020 in Tempe, AZ. The sale prices and home characteristics were collected from Zillow.com. Data for the distance between the home and light rail line were collected using the distance between the home\u27s address and the nearest light rail station. The results of this study found a decrease in the value of homes that are located within 3 miles of light rail transportation

Research Explorations in Genomics: Developing and Supporting Student-Scientist Partnerships at Linfield and Beyond
No full textNew technologies spark innovative experimental approaches in biology. Publicly available genome sequences and web-based bioinformatics tools have enabled geneticists to shift discovery from the lab bench to the laptop. Since 2012, Linfield University students have contributed to comparative genomics research with scientific collaborators connected through the Genomics Education Partnership (GEP). The GEP is an international group of scientists crowd-sourcing genomic data analysis to explore unanswered questions in molecular genetics and evolutionary biology. As a GEP Steering Committee member and Co-director of New Member Training, Dr. Catherine Reinke (associate professor of biology at Linfield University) has developed a virtual faculty training program which aims to double the GEP faculty membership over the next five years, significantly expanding the numbers of undergraduates engaged in low-cost, course-based undergraduate research in biology far beyond the current 1,300 GEP students/year. The Portland Hipster Versus the Rural Oregonian: The Urban-Rural Divide and the Rise of Resentment in Oregon
No full textThe topic of political polarization and resentment, specifically within the realm of the urban-rural divide has become a recent topic of importance. This study specifically looks at the urban-rural divide in the state of Oregon and the rise of resentment between urban and rural communities over feelings of unequal power distribution. The urban-rural divide in Oregon is examined through the three themes of political representation, economic distribution, and cultural attitudes, with the hopes of drawing a conclusion of whether these feelings are supported by empirical economic and political data. Other possible factors for these feelings of resentment, such as culture, are also explored. It was found that the feelings of unequal power distribution of political representation and economic allocation were supported differently by the data used. With economic power, the question of whether rural Oregonians receive their fair share was inconclusive with the data presented
Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Grant Report
No full textThis project was the beginning of a study on community changes following the outbreak of sea star wasting disease (SSWD) on the Oregon coast. SSWD devasted sea star populations throughout the coast. As these organisms are keystone predators, their absence resulted in significant shifts in the community. We studied these changes in estuaries where we have previously worked. We determined macro-scale changes by taking video surveys and comparing them to our previous surveys. We began to study micro-scale changes by collecting sponge, ascidian, and water samples, and are preparing to compare the microbial communities in these samples to those taken over the last several years. This research will give us insight into how these important estuarine communities have changed, and how they might recover in the future
