Design of an Altitude Compensating Carburetor for an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
No full textUnmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) engines can be used for several purposes, such as climate monitoring, forest fire containment, and agriculture. However, with changing altitudes a factor, the engine needs to be able to adjust the air/fuel mixture to continue being efficient during flight. Since this project is working off an existing design, there are limited options for the servo motor and carburetor to be placed. These components are responsible for the movement that opens and closes the throttle, which is an important action to keep the engine efficient. This design created two different rotating bodies that needed to be connected optimally by linkage, so that the throttle would fully open/close with a linear relationship between the servo motor and the throttle. This optimal length was found by studying mathematically as well as experimentally through the creation of the design on SolidWorks. The mathematical model provides an ‘ideal’ length, but the SolidWorks model provides valuable insight on the real-world mechanics of the design. The design allows for a tolerance of approximately ±14% difference between the ideal and real-world lengths that were determined
Effective Drone Usage for Wildfire Coverage in Victoria
Get PDFIn this paper, we take a look at how drones can be used to efficiently help out with the communication between firefighters on the front line of wildfires with the operations center. We also take a look at how drones can also be used to survey the land, and how the wildfire is changing, to further instruct the operations center on how to most effectively disperse firefighters to control the fire. We look at the optimal positions for the drone placement in order to stay in signal range while also covering the most area possible. Using actual data from bushfires in Victoria (Australia) in 2020, we are able to calculate how many drones will be needed by anticipating that a much bigger event than the fire in 2020 would not happen in the next decade. Taking into account factors including topography, distance, and signal type, we are able to place both Surveillance and Situational Awareness (SSA) drones and repeaters on drones to maximize the effect the drones have on the situation. The cost and the benefits of the drone are taken into consideration when we calculate how many drones we would recommend to the Country Fire Authority
Automatic Control System for Smart Trash Can
No full textMy project focuses on the automatic control system for the smart trash can. With the automatic control system, the trash can could be understood as a robot, and it has its own brain to think and act. In order to observe people coming to the trash can, the light sensor acts as the “human eye” to detect the residents and open the lid for them. The light sensor works by emitting and then detecting a light signal. The motor acts like a human’s hands. It helps to lift the lid up, so people can throw garbage without touching the handle of the lid. An Arduino board, which controls the electric signals, is like the “brain” because it can analyze information from the “eyes.” Then, it will let the “hands” open the lid when the “eyes” find people come to throw the garbage away. Overall, the goal is to make people’s life easier, and reduce contact so that people stay healthier

One or None? Truth and Self-Transformation for Śaṅkara and Kamalaśīla
Get PDFThis article explores how two influential 8th-century Indian philosophers, Śaṅkara and Kamalaśīla, treat the threefold scheme of learning, reasoning, and meditation in their spiritual path philosophies. They have differing institutional and ontological commitments: the former, who helped establish Advaita Vedānta as the religious philosophy of an elite Hindu monastic tradition, affirms an unchanging “self” (ātman) identical to the “world-essence” (brahman); the latter, who played a significant role in the development of Buddhist monasticism in Tibet, denies both self and essence. Yet, they share a concern with questions of truth and the means by which someone could gain access to it, such as what, if anything, meditation contributes to knowledge and its acquisition. By exploring their answers to this and related questions, including how discursive and conceptual practices like learning, reasoning, and meditation could generate nonconceptual knowledge or knowledge of the nonconceptual, this essay shows the difficulty of separating “philosophical” problems of truth from those related to self-transformation or “spirituality,” as Michel Foucault defines the terms. It also reassesses, as a framework for comparison, the well-known contrast between “gradual” and “sudden” approaches to the achievement of liberating knowledge and highlights them as tensions we still struggle to resolve today

No full textCivility, Free Speech, and Academic Freedom in Higher Education: Faculty on the Margins represents a multidisciplinary approach, deploying different theoretical, methodological, sociological, political, and creative perspectives to articulate the stakes of civility for marginalized faculty within the landscape of higher education.
How has the discourse on civility and free speech within academia become a systemic and oppressive form of silencing, suppressing, or eradicating marginal voices? What are some overt and covert ways in which institutions are using the logic of civility to control faculty uprising against the increasingly corporate-controlled landscape of higher education? This collection of essays examines the continuum between the post-9/11 and the post-Trump era backlashes. It details the organized retaliations against those in academia whose views and scholarships articulate their discontents against the U.S.-led War on Terror. It contests the rise of White supremacy, Trump’s Muslim ban, anti-immigrant and racist government policies and rhetoric, and those who support the Boycott and Divestment Sanctions movements within the corporatized universities.
All of these new and original essays shed light and further the debate on the various modes of civility that have become politicized within the U.S. academy.
