Women’s swimming team 
claims first NWC title in 
30 years
 After an unbeaten season, the Lin-
field women’s swimming team captured its 
first team championship in 30 years. It was 
also the first crown by an Oregon-based 
school since 1994. The men ended the 
meet in third place. Linfield swimmers won 
first in eight individual events and seven 
relays during the four-day event, which 
included six new program records.
 The stellar performance at the 
conference championships ended a his-
toric season for the Wildcats. Both swim 
teams made program history by complet-
ing a perfect 8-0 season in Northwest 
Conference dual meets. It was the first 
time that either team finished with an 8-0 
record, making it a truly historic year for 
the teams and head coach Kyle Kimball.
 In addition to a perfect conference 
record, the Linfield men’s swim team 
also recorded its first win against Whit-
worth, ending the Pirates’ 50-meet dual 
winning streak in the NWC that dated 
back to the 2014-15 season.
 The Wildcats landed 20 swimmers on 
the All-NWC Team, including nine women 
and seven men receiving First Team hon-
ors. Kimball was named NWC Women’s 
Swimming Coach of the Year, and Sarah 
Arpag ’26 was named the women’s NWC 
Rookie of the Year.
Football players continue 
All-America legacy
 Graduate student Matt Metcalf ’22 
and Blake Rybar ’24 finished the 2022 
season among the best in Division III 
at their respective positions. The pair 
earned All-America status, continuing 
Linfield’s streak of having at least one 
student-athlete named an All-American 
for the last 15 consecutive seasons.
 Metcalf, a center from Sheldon 
High School in Eugene, earned unani-
mous support from all three All-America 
organizations. He was selected as a 
First Team All-American by both the 
American Football Coaches Associa-
tion (AFCA) and the Associated Press 
(AP) and Second Team All-American by 
D3football.com.
 Joining Metcalf on the D3football.
com All-America Team, Rybar was 
tabbed as a Third Team honoree. The 
Monroe, Washington, native was the first 
Linfield linebacker to earn All-American 
status since Jason Farlow ’18 received 
the honor in 2017.
 With Metcalf and Rybar joining 
a long list of all-time greats, Linfield 
football now has 155 All-Americans in 
the program’s history. The Wildcats have 
had an All-American in every season 
dating back to 2007.
Softball ranked No. 12  
in preseason poll
 The Linfield softball team is look-
ing for its third national championship 
as its 2023 season gets into full swing. 
The Wildcats were ranked No. 12 in the 
NFCA Division III Preseason Top 25 
poll.  Last year, the team earned its 15th 
NWC regular-season championship and 
its eighth NWC Tournament title before 
being knocked out of the NCAA Division 
III Championships during regional play. A 
majority of starting players are returning 
from last year’s squad, including Tayah 
Kelly ’23, the reigning NWC Pitcher of the 
Year, who set a single-season program 
record in 2022 by striking out 252 batters.
Linfield alumni lead tennis 
programs
 Alex Martin ’03 and Tessa Kern ’22 
were appointed as interim coaches of 
the men’s and women’s tennis teams, 
respectively, athletic director Garry  
Killgore announced in January 2023. 
Both are Wildcat alumni and former 
tennis student-athletes. They take over 
after former coach Ella Riddle-Maliska  
became Linfield’s director of sport  
performance. 
 Martin worked with the current team 
during the spring and fall of 2022 as 
a volunteer men’s assistant coach. He 
spent three years serving as the assis-
tant men’s and women’s tennis coach 
at Linfield (2005-07), helping lead the 
women’s squad to consecutive NWC 
titles and a berth in the NCAA regional 
championships in 2007. He has also 
coached at George Fox, McMinnville 
High School and Woodburn High School. 
 A four-year tennis letterwinner,  
Martin was a three-time First Team 
All-Northwest Conference selection.  
He captained the Wildcats to consecutive 
NWC championships in 2002 and 2003. 
He currently teaches health and chairs 
the health education department at 
Woodburn High School.
 Kern was a four-year standout for 
the Wildcats and a member of three NWC 
championship teams. She was a two-
time First Team All-NWC selection and a 
four-time ITA Scholar-Athlete, ending her 
career with a 38-11 career doubles record. 
 Kern currently serves as a head 
professional at Timberhill Tennis Club in 
Corvallis, leading lessons and running 
clinics for junior and adult players. She 
also runs junior USTA tournaments and 
community classes.

Starting NWC play with historic win
 Despite being picked last in the preseason poll, the Linfield women’s basketball team  
finished the season 10-15 overall and 6-10 in NWC play. The season included a historic win for 
its conference opener, beating George Fox 56-50 on Dec. 2, 2022.
 The six-point victory snapped a 33-game losing streak for the Wildcats against their cross-county 
rivals. The program’s last win over the Bruins came in a 51-50 victory during the 2006-07 season. 
 The game was close from tipoff to the final buzzer. The teams alternated leads repeatedly 
throughout the first three quarters. Going into the fourth, Linfield trailed by just one point. In the 
final 1:30 of the game, guard Ella Koebelin ’26 stole the ball, rushing down the court for a layin and 
putting the Wildcats up 49-46. The crowd erupted, and Linfield never looked back. The win was the 
first against George Fox for head coach Casey Bunn-Wilson, now in her eighth season at Linfield.

Young Cats Club returns 
in 2022-23
 After a multi-year hiatus due to 
safety concerns, the athletic depart-
ment’s Young Cats Club resumed in fall 
2022 with a slate of free and fun activ-
ities for local youth. Young Cats Club 
events connect kids ages 5-12 with Lin-
field student-athletes and coaches. Each 
event includes basic skills development 
and autographs from team members. 
Participants also receive a free t-shirt, 
autograph book and general admission 
ticket to an upcoming event.
 So far this year, more than 200 kids 
have participated in events featuring the 
volleyball, football, men’s soccer, wom-
en’s soccer, cheer and dance teams. 
Additional events are slated this spring.
 The Young Cats Club is sponsored 
by the McMinnville office of Goldman 
Sachs Personal Financial Management 
and Your Space Storage. 
Linfield soccer to host 
alumni on April 29 
 The Wildcat men’s and women’s 
soccer programs are hosting Linfield 
Soccer Alumni Day on Saturday, April 29, 
at the Linfield Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. 
The day will feature plenty of soccer ac-
tion, as well as food and beverages. The 
event is presented by Boxwell.
 The day begins with the current 
Linfield women’s team taking on Mult-
nomah University in an exhibition match 
at 10 a.m. followed by the Linfield men 
facing Multnomah at noon. At 2 p.m., 
the current women’s team will face off 
against a Legends team comprised 
of alumni. A men’s Legends match is 
scheduled to follow at 3:30 p.m.  
All alumni soccer players are invited and 
encouraged to participate.
Football announces 2023 
schedule
 The Linfield football program re-
leased its 2023 schedule. The Wildcats 
start their season Sept. 2 at Simon Fra-
ser in Burnaby, B.C., marking Linfield’s 
first return to Canada since 1994. 
 The team’s home and Northwest 
Conference opener is scheduled for 
Sept. 30 against the Willamette Bear-
cats. Other home games include Oct. 14 
against George Fox for homecoming, 
Oct. 28 against Pacific for Fall Family 
Weekend and Nov. 11 for the Pacific 
Office Automation Hall of Fame game. 
 Linfield is seeking its 67th consec-
utive winning football season and fourth 
straight Northwest Conference champi-
onship this fall. See the full schedule at

Inaugural season begins 
with successes on the mat
 Linfield launched a new chapter  
in its wrestling history on Nov. 10, 2022. 
In front of an energetic crowd, the men’s 
and women’s wrestling teams swept 
Pacific University and won the first home 
wrestling matches at Linfield in 37 years. 
This winter marked Linfield’s inaugural 
NCAA season for the men’s and wom-
en’s programs. The school previously 
sponsored a men’s team until 1986-87, 
which competed in the NAIA. 
 The first NCAA wins for Linfield came 
earlier in November at the Washington 
State Wrestling Coaches Association 
annual convention. Ayana Medina ’26, a 
student-athlete from Hillsboro, claimed 
her spot in the history books with a pin 
over Anna Rodriguez of Big Bend Com-
munity College in the 130-pound weight 
class. Jacob Barnes ’25, a heavyweight 
wrestler from McMinnville, earned the 
first win on the men’s side with a pin in 
just 23 seconds over Bradley Whitright 
of North Idaho College. 
 Barnes went on to place fifth at the 
NCAA Upper Midwest Regional and 
Micah Worthington ’26 earned eighth 
place at the event at 149 pounds. 
 Six female wrestlers qualified for the 
National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling 
Championship Region V tournament, 
and two advanced to nationals. Emily 
Sullenger ’26 became the first women’s 
wrestler in Linfield history to qualify for 
the national championship after finishing 
as a runner-up in the 123-pound weight 
class. Medina also qualified by finishing 
fourth in the 136-pound division.
Roy Helser Field gets 
upgrades
 Linfield’s baseball facilities are 
receiving slight upgrades this winter.  
In December, the outfield received a new 
vinyl wrap, paying tribute to the 1966, 1971 
and 2013 national championship teams 
and five of the program’s notable legends: 
Roy Helser ’36; Ad Rutschman ’54; Scott 
Carnahan ’75; Jim Ray ’78; and Scott  
Brosius ’87. All are alumni student-athletes 
and former Linfield baseball coaches. 
 In January, work began at Roy Hels-
er Field to build an addition to the exist-
ing batting cage. The new 726-square-
foot room will provide expanded strength 
and conditioning space and a new team 
meeting room. 
 The donor-funded project will be 
completed in spring 2023.

 For the first time in 35 years – the first time ever for women – 
Linfield student-athletes are donning singlets and wrestling shoes. 
University officials announced the return of men’s and women’s 
wrestling in October 2021 and hired former Pac-12 wrestling 
champion Chad Hanke to lead the programs shortly thereafter. The 
teams, which will begin competition in the 2022-23 season, repre-
sent the first new sports at Linfield since 
the addition of women’s lacrosse in 1997. 
 “Linfield hasn’t had a new sport in 
25 years, and we thought long and hard 
about why this is the right time for wres-
tling,” said Linfield Athletic Director Garry 
Killgore. “Oregon is a hotbed of women’s 
wrestling, which the NCAA has designated 
as one of its emerging sports. But the Pa-
cific Northwest is also a region that lacks 
enough college wrestling opportunities for 
men. We will be recruiting hard to bring 
these student-athletes to Linfield.”
A coach with local roots, 
national successes 
 Hanke grew up in Dayton, where 
he was a three-time high school state 
champion. He attended Oregon State University, where he 
went on to be a two-time NCAA qualifier and conference cham-
pion for the Beavers. He had a 35-5 record as a senior and was 
ranked as high as No. 4 in the country. 
 After graduating in 2014, Hanke went on to assistant 
Division I coaching positions at Oregon State University, 
American University and Cal State-Bakersfield. 
 “We want to create more opportunities for Oregon’s high 
school wrestlers to access four-year higher education, the same 
way I did,” Hanke said.
 His goal is to attract 10 new Linfield students for each wres-
tling squad by next fall – something Hanke started working on 
before he even had an on-campus office or a Linfield computer. 
 “There is a lot of talent in high 
school wrestling in the region, but not 
enough opportunities to continue in the 
sport close to home,” Hanke said. “Now, 
Linfield will be one of the places where 
students can get a great education 
while competing in a sport they are 
passionate about.”
A growing sport with 
much demand
 Wildcat wrestling is not entirely 
new; Linfield sponsored an NAIA-level 
wrestling program that ended in the 
1980s. But questions from prospective 
students regarding wrestling opportuni-
ties at Linfield have risen consistently in 
recent years, according to the Office of 
Admission. The demand was there. 
 The NCAA considers wrestling as one of the top sports in 
terms of attracting first-generation students – a group that makes 
up roughly one-third of Linfield’s current student population.

  The first time Alyssa Lampe 
reported for work at Linfield, she 
was sporting a black eye – courtesy 
of a practice with the Oregon State 
men’s wrestling team. 
 A six-time member of the 
U.S. women’s national team and 
two-time world bronze medalist, Lampe still works out three 
mornings a week in Corvallis with an eye toward the 2024 
Olympic Games. She’s also thrilled to be the assistant coach 
for Linfield’s new wrestling program. 
 “What an exciting time to be at Linfield, and an exciting 
time for wrestling in the Northwest,” Lampe said. “I’m 
especially motivated to recruit and train the first women 
wrestlers in school history. We’re going to build a program 
all of Linfield can be proud to call its own.” 
 The Tomahawk, Wisconsin, native claimed the bronze 
medal at the World Championships in 2012 and 2013, and 
was a member of Team USA from 2009 to 2016. She qualified 
for the team again in 2021 and is currently ranked No. 3 in 
the nation at the 110-pound/50 kilogram division.

A major win for college wrestling
 A statewide organization called Restore College Wrestling 
Oregon (RCWOR) is happy with this growth trajectory. Leaders of 
the group, which also helped lobby for new wrestling programs at 
Eastern Oregon University and Corban University, raised money  
to help defray startup costs for Linfield’s program. The organization 
also paid for Linfield’s first new competition wrestling mat. 
 Doug Caffall, RCWOR’s president, and Larry Bielenberg, an 
NCAA All-American and former heavyweight national champion 
for Oregon State, both have Linfield ties and have been champi-
oning the effort for years. 
 “Linfield’s decision to bring back wrestling is a major win for 
the sport of college wrestling and for Oregon as a whole,” said 
Bielenberg, whose daughter and son-in-law are Linfield alumni. 
“Linfield’s restoration holds a lot of weight for other colleges 
and universities.”
 Linfield and Pacific University in Forest Grove will be the 
only NCAA Division III wrestling programs in the Northwest. The 
new Wildcat programs will fill out much of their regular-season 
schedule with regional opponents from NAIA and NCAA  
Division I and II schools. 
Grassroots efforts lead to top 10 dreams
 Until then, Hanke is coaching a student-led men’s and wom-
en’s wrestling club at Linfield. The club was approved by ASLU 
in the fall of 2020, but then wasn’t allowed to compete during 
the pandemic year. In the fall of 2021, club members went to 
work building a program even before they learned of the NCAA 
program announcement. 
 The students arranged for the donation of mats from McMin-
nville and Newberg high schools, worked with other university 
clubs to make a competition schedule, fundraised to pay for 
travel and referee costs and even designed their own singlets.  
 They had their first competition, and Linfield’s first wrestling 
of any kind since the mid-1980s, November 20, 2021, at the Big 
Bend Scramble in Moses Lake, Washington. Among the winners 
that day was Carissa Love ’23, who pinned an opponent from 
Washington State University to become the first woman in Linfield 
history to have her hand raised following a wrestling match. 
 “Programs like Linfield’s are key to returning Oregon to its 
status as a small-college wrestling powerhouse,” said Caffall, who 
is the son of one Linfield graduate and the father of two others. 
“There is tremendous potential for expansion in Oregon and 
throughout the Pacific Northwest.”
 Hanke agrees with that, but says he’s focused more squarely 
on making Linfield a small-college powerhouse in its own right. 
 “All the building blocks are here to be great,” Hanke said. 
“There’s no reason men’s and women’s wrestling can’t be as 
much of a dynasty as Linfield football or softball – a top-10 
team every year built around a steady stream of All-Americans. 
That’s our goal.”

Abstract
This poster illustrates the use of audio sensors to detect the response of birds and speakers to startle them. Modern agriculture suffers from frequent losses due to the destruction of crops by birds; thus, inexpensive tools need to be developed to protect crops. The general idea is to detect high-frequency birdcalls which triggers an audio circuit designed to make noise. A consideration of the feasibility for use in the field will be discussed, as well as potential improvements and limitations
