A Culutre of Schoolwork and Music

    Get PDF
While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield University write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Abigael LaBuhn describes observations during their study abroad program at the National University of Ireland in Galway

Quantifying Fungi in Biodynamic Vineyard Soil

    No full text
Biodiversity in winery soil is a crucial part of vine success, health, and grape taste. Fungi is an important part of this microbiome, for it helps in the breakdown of organic materials and nutrient cycling as well as crop protection. We were recruited to look at the fungi content in the soil of a local vineyard that practices biodynamic farming. Biodynamic farming is a practice that does not use pesticides or chemicals. Instead, the entire vineyard is viewed as its own ecosystem that needs to be naturally self-sustaining; hence, why the presence of fungi is so important. Molecular techniques like DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and Quantitative PCR were utilized to measure the amount of fungi in soil samples across the vineyard. Data suggests that there is an increase in the amounts of fungi in samples across different years and seasons, leading us to believe that biodynamic farming practices are working. This information can be integrated into organic farming practices to promote the growth of fungi, and in turn, produce generations of prosperous crops

Arduino Based Tuner Versus Other Standard Tuners

    No full text
This project will look at the capabilities of an Arduino Uno board while also comparing its experimental accuracy in reading guitar frequencies. Steel string guitars are most often tuned a couple of different ways. These methods are either a microphone through audible frequency or a clip on sensor that reads the vibrations of the string through the neck of the guitar. While these methods are easier and more accessible, they allow for a great amount of outside noise and variability in their reading of the string’s output. The Arduino board will achieve the same goal but with less outside disturbance. The board will interact with the incoming electrical signals generated from the changing magnetic field due to the steel strings harmonic motion over a magnet. The manipulation will involve a combination of coding and physical circuitry to convert the raw data into a “tuner” that will tell you how far the string is from the desired frequency

Thickness Determination of Hexagonal Boron Nitride by Color

    No full text
This research discusses the methods to produce a model that can use color to optically determine broad range thicknesses of boron nitride flakes. Quick identification by color vastly outperforms the speed of the AFM scans that are typically used to measure thickness of boron nitride, with the limitation of broader range estimates of step height. Through the interpretation of RGB color resulting from differences in optical contrast between BN and the SiO2 substrate on which the flakes are resting, relationships are identified to predict thickness of BN present

Development of Cu-Catalyzed Oxidative Alkylboron Homocoupling

Carbon-carbon bonding is considered one of the most important chemical reaction classes in organic chemistry. The goal of this project is to perform a new carbon-carbon coupling reaction using copper to catalyze a radical boron reaction to form an sp3–sp3 C-C bond. Boron has been used in the past to form C-C bonds. What is novel about this research is the geometry of the two carbon atoms being joined. Two sp2 carbon coupling from boron reagents has been achieved beforeand one group was able to couple an sp2 carbon and an sp3 carbon. This experiment seeks to oxidatively couple two sp3 carbons to generate symmetrical alkyl products
