“In Reply to Your Advertisement . . .”: Local Influences on the Hiring of Teachers, Arkona, Ontario, 1882–1884
This paper examines a collection of documents related to the public school board for Arkona, Ontario for the period of the early 1880s, with a stress on letters of application by various teachers from across Ontario. An examination of these letters and the accompanying references in the local context of the changing economic and social underpinnings of sheds light on the hiring processes, as well as providing access into the lives of individual teachers during the 1880s
L’image, moyen de lutte contre l’analphabétisme: la presse illustrée au XIXe siècle et l'éducation populaire
This article focuses on the role of the illustrated press in the development of a particular form of literacy, which one might call the ability to “read” images. Of course, in principle literacy concerns written text, yet, in a way which indicates the extent to which education by and through images has been underestimated, no specific terminology exists either for this way of perceiving or of taking knowledge from images.Cette étude se concentre sur le rôle de la presse illustrée dans le développement d’une certaine forme d’alphabétisation, ce que l’on pourrait appeler la capacité de « lire » les images.
