Architecture for the People or by the People? Exploring Agency in the works of Hassan Fathy and Yasmeen Lari
In the struggle of creating affordable housing in today’s economy, architecture becomes more than just bricks and mortar, it becomes a question of who holds the power for rebuilding lives and communities. This paper explores the contrasting approaches of agency in some of the projects of Hassan Fathy (1900-1980) in Egypt and Yasmeen Lari (1941) in Pakistan. Lari and Fathy were both recognized for their humanitarian efforts and have been awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for their innovative works in Egypt and Pakistan. The research finds that Lari’s design and building methodology using her architectural concept of “Barefoot Social Architecture” gives agency to the people through involving them in the construction process of flood-resistant houses particularly through using sustainable and vernacular materials like mud and bamboo. This empowers the community’s self-reliance, sense of ownership, and environmental sustainability in the face of natural disasters. In Contrast, Fathy keeps agency in the hands of the architect through his concept of “Architecture for the poor” and guides the community through his own vision of traditional and vernacular architecture according to the community’s needs. This is particularly apparent in his projects like New Gourna Village, where he guides the community through his interpretation of their needs. Through comparing Fathy and Lari’s distinct approaches towards agency in architecture, this paper highlights the broader implications for future architectural practice particularly in the context of poverty and natural disasters. It questions whether architecture should be a collaborative process between the architect and the community, or an assertion to the architect’s authority. It also demonstrates how the distribution of agency can influence both the success and the sustainability of the project in today’s time
Analysis of Visayan/Bisayan/Cebuano Philippine Traditional Vocal Repertoire
This poster will share in-progress analytic work assessing the scales, modes, and pitch collections of Visayan/Bisayan/Cebuano folk song repertoire of the Philippines. As a pilot study, this work will focus on a portion of the repertoire collected by Priscilla Magdamo; materials collected under the auspices of Silliman and Indiana University. Through use of Kodály-style pitch maps and post-tonal mappings, a preliminary baseline of the repertoire is presented. In addition to establishing normative scalar patterns for this repertoire, preliminary pedagogical merits of the repertoire will be identified for potential use in Aural Skills I&II curriculum. Research outputs are of value to broad ethnomusicological and traditional music academic communities of the Philippines, as well as the broader Filipino diaspora stakeholders, including those residing in Georgia, the United States, and abroad
Deposition of Metal-Organic Framework and Silver Nanoparticles on Cotton Fabric for Effective Adsorption and Fixation of Radioactive Iodine
The purpose of this project is to create highly adsorbent porous composite materials. Commercially available cotton fabric (CF) with a hierarchical structure contains micro and macropores. We hypothesize that incorporating a metal-organic framework (MOF) can create highly adsorbent porous material, MOF@CF. Subsequent addition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) will create AgNP@MOF@CF composite material. In addition, we created AgNP@CF. Such composite material will adsorb and fix radioactive iodine (based on the following reaction, 2Ag + I2 à 2AgI2). We will compare the adsorption and fixation capacity of AgNP@MOF@CF and AgNP@CF. SEM, EDX, FTIR, and XRD techniques will be used to characterize the composite materials. The iodine adsorption experiment will be monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy
Educating students on the behavioral and psychological aspects of romance scam victimization via a social engineering competition
The online dating industry generated 2.98 billion USD in 2023 and is estimated to reach 3.6 billion USD by 2025. Not surprisingly, online dating platforms are rife with romance scams that cause financial damages, with estimated losses of 1.3 billion USD in 2022 alone. Additionally, victims suffer emotional and psychological harms. This paper shares findings from a 2023 Romance Scam and Social Engineering Competition (RSSEC) that introduced students to the behavioral and psychological aspects of romance scams. Specifically, the competition aimed to expose students to (i) understanding how victims experience social engineering (SE) - the psychological manipulation of human behavior, in each of the romance scam stages and (ii) taking on the role of fraud fighters as they engaged with the victims while treating them with respect and empathy, as well as the scammers who were using SE in their cons (tricks). The paper details the competition design (including the use of artificial intelligence), structure, and logistics. It shares findings about students’ understanding of the use of psychological persuasion to con victims across the romance scam process, as well as their ability to work together as effective fraud fighters. The RSSEC gave students the opportunity to treat scam victims with dignity by employing tactical empathy, an important skill for them to understand the behavioral and psychological aspects of cybercrime victimization

In recent decades the power of humans to modify the landscape has been transformed by the achievements of humans in increasing their numbers, the increase in individual affluence and consumption in western societies, and the application of new technologies. During the twentieth century the human population of the planet has exploded. It was not until the time of George Perkins Marsh, author of that great landmark work on conservation Man and Nature (1864), that the world\u27s population reached 1000 million-a process that had taken about 3 million years. However, by 1930 it had doubled yet again to 2000 million, by 1975 it had doubled yet again to 4000 million, and by 1989 it has reached a figure of over 5000 million. The time required to add 1000 million people to the Earth\u27s population has been reduced to just 12 years. Likewise, world industrial production has grown more than fiftyfold over the past century, with four fifths of this growth occurring since 1950. Urbanization has been equally rapid. The world\u27s urban population has increased tenfold, from around 100 million in 1920 to 1 billion today. Population Distribution by Religious Affiliation: Terrorist Activity in Northern Ireland
The districts of Northern Ireland are well defined in identifying where people live according to their religious affiliation. Patterns emerge which enable generalizations to be made about where people reside depending upon whether they are classified as Protestant or Catholic. The purpose of this research is to ascertain how terrorist incidents are associated with population distribution by religious affiliation for the past two decades on a district by district basis. It is the general contention that terrorist activity occurs where there is a mixture of Catholics and Protestants. Shifts in population distribution correspond to changes in the spatial distribution of terrorist activities. Results indicate that terrorist activities, like the Catholic distribution, has shifted to the rural border areas of Northern Ireland. Associating the variables of population distribution and religious preference to terrorist activity demonstrates that human patterns can be classified and predicted even though the spatial behavior is not totally understood
News from the Chapters 1986-1987
During the fall the Gamma Delta Chapter held a series of seminars on topics of controversial nature, such as the causes of glaciation and the extinction of the dinosaurs. The fall picnic was a well-attended success as was the Christmas banquet. During the spring term, the chapter is running a seminar on the Great Plains and is co-sponsoring, with Biology\u27s Tri Beta and Geology\u27s SGE, the visit of Carnegie Museum\u27s Leonard Krishtalka, a paleontologist. The annual spring picnic is held in early May
Signature of a Precipitation Event: A Comparison of Three Spatial Perspectives
On April 03, 1981, a precipitation event in the form of a series of thunderstorm cells affected the central portion of Oklahoma. The event was recorded by the WSR-57 radar positioned at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma. In addition, the rainfall from the series of thunderstorms was recorded at rainfall gauges located at the Oklahoma Cooperative Weather Stations distributed throughout the state. The ground pattern of the corresponding rainfall event also was detected by the NOAA-6 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellite over-pass on April 04, 1986, one day after the precipitation event. This paper presents three techniques-radar traces, rainfall gauges, and meteorological satellite data-for characterizing the spatial pattern of thunderstorm development and migration. Each technique, which provides a unique perspective regarding the signature or character of the event, will be evaluated as to the type of information retrieved and its applicability for characterizing the spatial component of precipitation events
