    A Numeric Classification of Climate

    Get PDF
As one endeavors to create a system of categorizing different climatic types, he soon discovers that it is not an easy process. There are many factors and elements of climate which must be considered. The world also has an infinite number of unique climates that change through time. There are no abrupt changes from one climatic province to another as one might think by looking at a climate map. Each zone gradually meshes into the next adjoining zone, and the real difficulty lies in trying to determine an appropriate point to plot a division line. There are several important methods of alleviating this problem, but the time element often causes climatic conditions to change. This is why many scientists only use conditions for the last thirty years as a basis in determining a climatic classification.\u27 One important method of determining climatic boundaries is to examine visible vegetative changes from one climatic province to another. Tree lines, for example, are particularly helpful in determining the boundaries of frigid climates whether in polar or high altitude regions. It can also work to distinguish arid zones from more humid zones, although these boundaries are less distinct. In humid climates having marked dry seasons, the edge of the deciduous forest is sometimes used in determining a climatic boundary, although moisture content of the soil at different times of the year perhaps would be bette

A History of Urban Development in the U.S.S.R.

It need hardly be emphasized that a nation the size of the Soviet Union consolidation under a central government was not a simple task, but the culmination of an ongoing historical process. In order to consider the present stage of development, it should be viewed in its historical context. This will aid in understanding the reasons for the communist revolution and the central planning scheme which resulted. EARLY RUSSIAN HISTORY Early Russian history began in approximately 400 AD. when eastern Slavonic tribes (Russians) called Antae migrated to what became Russian territory from the vicinity of the Prepit marshes and neighboring regions north of the Carpathian mountains. During the ninth century, Scandinavian merchants established rule over an area in the Ukraine which was to become the first Russian state. Saint Vladimir, Prince of Kiev was a scion of this Viking dynasty; it is due to his conversion to Byzantine Christianity in 988 AD. that the Russian Orthodox Church was consolidated. Between 1237-1500 AD., Tatar oppression and occupation prevented Russia from progressing on the same lines as its neighbors in western Europe. Visitors to Russia in the seventeenth century found the Russians oldfashioned, exotic in the extreme, and amusingly grotesque

    Mediated Deposit for IRs

Institutional Repositories hold valuable research, data, learning objects, and theses and dissertations. However, convincing authors to add their works, especially published works, has been an ongoing challenge for librarians and repository managers. There are several proprietary and expensive options for ingesting content into repositories, yet most libraries are unable to support those tools ethically or financially. Montana State University has been using an open source tool created to help authors easily and legally share their work. Shareyourpaper.org allows our authors to share the correct version of their research without needing deep knowledge of copyright or spending time digging around looking for publishers’ policies. This tool has increased the volume and efficiency of deposit into MSU’s repository, increasing the impact of our research while saving librarians’ time. Four years into using this tool, our library has developed systems and workflows that ingest open metadata, make research visible to our campus colleagues, collect citation data, and increase or repository deposit rates

The Study of a Service Area

    Get PDF
Valparaiso, with a population of 20,900 as of 1970, is a city which serves the inhabitants of Porter County in northwest Indiana. The exact variety and combination of its services are not duplicated anywhere else in the world. In addition to the expected municipal functions for a city of its size (e.g. street repair, police and fire protection, mail and newspaper deliveries, shopping, and recreation facilities), Valparaiso also performs functions that other towns in the immediate vicinity do not provide. Examples of such functions include serving as the county seat of Porter County; housing the only Lutheran university in the Midwest; and providing hospital care through the only hospital in Porter County. To define the service area or sphere of influence of a central place, it is essential to study individually those services that contribute substantially to the economic base of that place. When the boundaries of several service areas for a specific town are superimposed, a general picture of the entire area of dominance should emerge. This study is a partial attempt to discover the extent of Valparaiso\u27s influence. The service chosen for consideration was health care, with particular emphasis on Porter Memorial Hospital. The major goal of researching this special function of Valparaiso was to determine the size and intensity of the health care service area as reflected through Porter Memorial Hospital

The Impact of AI Use in Programming Courses on Critical Thinking Skills

    Get PDF
Proficiency in computer programming extends far beyond memorizing syntax; it depends on the cultivation of critical thinking. Computer programming requires multiple interconnected competencies, including systematic problem analysis, algorithmic reasoning, mastery of programming languages, debugging capabilities, a comprehensive understanding of software development methodologies, rigorous testing practices, and systematic troubleshooting approaches. These skills are also essential for cybersecurity experts; cybersecurity programs require several programming courses to enhance students’ technical and critical thinking skills. Generative AI (GenAI) technologies have fundamentally changed the process of developing applications and approaches to teaching coding. The growing use of GenAI technologies by students in writing computer code has raised not only concerns about academic integrity but also their impact on the development of critical thinking skills, which are typically reinforced by assigning coding exercises that require students to rely on those skills to solve them. This paper presents the results of an empirical study examining students\u27 perceptions of using GenAI in coding assignments and its impact on critical thinking among cybersecurity students. The findings show that students use GenAI extensively to debug and correct their code. Findings also show that the use of GenAI should be structured to fully support the development of critical thinking skills

The National Cybersecurity Teaching Coalition: Expanding Cybersecurity Education Opportunities

    Get PDF
The increasing prevalence of cybersecurity threats and the shortage of qualified professionals necessitate innovative solutions for cybersecurity education at all levels. Despite the expansion of post-secondary cybersecurity programs, employer dissatisfaction with graduates and a lack of standardized introductory curricula highlights the need for structured secondary education pathways. The National Cybersecurity Teaching Coalition (NCTC) and its National Cybersecurity Teaching Academy (NCTA) address this gap by equipping high school educators with the necessary knowledge and credentials to teach cybersecurity effectively. NCTA offers an 18-credit cybersecurity graduate certificate program to ensure teachers are competent and confident to develop and teach cybersecurity curriculum with consistent learning outcomes across institutions. This paper examines the state of the cybersecurity workforce, the development of the NCTA program and curriculum, and the evolution of the program. Additionally, this paper evaluates the NCTA program based on external evaluation results, emphasizing the importance of qualified educators in fostering cybersecurity awareness and career readiness. Future initiatives focus on professionalizing cybersecurity, developing state-level licensing and endorsements, and reinforcing the role of educators in securing the nation against evolving cyber threats

Sojourner Truth’s Vision: A Life Dedicated to Ending Injustice

    Get PDF
This essay explores the profound legacy of Sojourner Truth, a pivotal figure in the fight against injustice. Through a personal narrative interwoven with historical analysis, the author reflects on their initial ignorance of Truth\u27s significance and how a school project transformed their understanding. The paper delves into Truth\u27s life, including her experiences as a formerly enslaved woman, her impactful speeches and her collaboration with other notable activists. It examines the complexities of her identity as a Black woman in the 19th century, the societal perceptions of femininity, and the challenges she faced within the feminist movement. The author also draws on the works of bell hooks and Jen McDaneld to illustrate how Black women were silenced and overlooked in the struggle for women’s rights. By analyzing archival photographs and historical context, the author reveals the intentionality behind Truth\u27s public persona, her efforts to advocate for both abolition and women\u27s rights, and how Truth’s legacy continues to inspire and educate even today
