Metrics, and How It All Came About
Surveying? Just use the laser beam for a measuring device; accuracy of one mm to a range of eight km. But why the need for accuracy and what is a meter? The use of the meter as the basis of all linear measurement has been a matter of controversy for several centuries. Some few nations oppose the adoption of the metric system, most nations have adopted it wholly. No effort will be made here to analyze the controversy. However, the controversy leads one to wonder why and how the metric system came into existence. The purpose of this article is to give the historical background of the metric system. Of specific historical interest are the events and incidences that brought about its establishment, the actual measurement of the earth in establishing the length of the meter, and its acceptance in the worl
Ashes Of Power
The objective of this project was to write a creative work using a theme found in an American writer\u27s literary text studied throughout the course and create a visual and/or auditory piece. By doing this, students can further interpret the literary texts, themes, and genres found in American Literature. For my short story, “Ashes of Power,” I chose to focus on the theme of “powerlessness” found in the 1985 play Fences written by August Wilson. The story is told through the point of view of a young and strong woman, Xena, and is set in a fantasy world that is entirely fictional. Throughout the story the audience will see the trials and challenges that Xena faces and how she must overcome them. Powerlessness is a common theme I see presented in the types of books I read, especially with the female protagonists. After deciding to write a short story about this theme, I knew I wanted the setting to take place in a fantasy world, so I could play with the dynamic of the main character being physically powerless as well as circumstantially powerless. When deciding what I wanted the visual/auditory format of my story to be, I immediately knew I wanted to create an audiobook. Because my story is fantasy, it has words, names, and phrases that are made up and could be confusing or hard to pronounce for the reader. By creating an audio version, the reader or listener can focus more on what’s happening in the story than getting stuck on how to pronounce certain words. I listened to a dramatized audiobook titled Fourth Wing, and I loved how different it was from the other audiobooks that I’ve listened to. The things that stood out to me were that each character in the story had a different voice actor to play the role, there was background music, and sound effects that really brought the story to life. I felt like I was watching a movie in my own head, and I was inspired by that to create my own dramatized audiobook for my short story.
*Note: all the images and music featured in the student\u27s audiobook are open resources found via Google
Heroes at the Clinic
This project explores different themes of heroism as seen through comparing my volunteer experience at the Veterinary Clinic at the Avenues in Marietta with major works of World Literature. It is shown how dedicated and selfless the staff are, as well as how strong and content the animals are. It puts an emphasis on how little acts of service can truly make a meaningful impact as it helps to create a broader understanding of heroism in our society.
For this assignment, students were asked to examine modern and ancient literary definitions of heroism by completing community service hours in person and creating a multimodal project about it
Rural Development versus Rural Preservation: Conflicting USDA Land Use Programs and Policies
With the mounting cost of farm ownership and operation, and the rapid increase in urbanization, the issue of farmland preservation has come to the forefront in many states, counties, townships, and villages. These factors, combined with inflation, severe fluctuations in the economy, and restrictions in the use of natural resources, have brought about heightened concern on the part of farmers in recent years. Farmers and rural communities are seeking alternative ways to cope with these conditions. Sale of their land to the highest bidder is one option that often results in conversion of prime agricultural land to other uses. The need for productive agricultural land is not diminishing, and yet this conversion is increasing at a staggering rate
Locational Characteristics Of Mobile Home Parks In Columbus, Ohio
The history of Africa is full of the accounts of movements of people on large scales. Some of the movements had occurred in the form of conquests in war and some had taken place by a slow and largely peaceful shift to new lands. Such movements we are told, have been a feature of Africa in the past and are one of its most important demographic features at present. There is no phase of African history which can be understood without reference to the movements of people both before and during it. However, there are differences in types, magnitudes and the casual factors of the past and present migration in Africa. Prothero divides migration in Africa on the basis of continuity and change into three categories as follows:\u27 (a) movements that took place in the past which no longer exist but which may help explain the present distribution of population (b) movements that have continued from the past into the present such as seasonal pastoral migrations, long term migratory drift, and religious pilgrimages and (c) movements that have developed in the recent times, such as downhill or rural -urban migrations. The bulk of migration studies now focus on the third category and justifiably so
The Impact Of Land Use On Wildlife Habitat
The scope of biogeography includes, among other things, the analysis of the distribution and redistribution of biota as a result of a more or less purposeful and direct modification of the natural environment by man.! One aspect of human modification of natural environments has been the alteration and destruction of wi Idlife habitats. Wildlife is a product of the land.2 Different kinds of wildlife can occupy the land only so long as their required habitat types exist in a particular spatial arrangement. The maximum population of wildlife that any given unit of land can support, therefore depends on the interspersion of the habitat types in relation to the mobility of the species (Figure 1). Most wildlife species require at least three or four environmental types in a \u27particular juxtaposition on each unit of range. The \u27unit\u27 is a spatial one of such size that all necessary habitat types are accessible to the individual animal. The degree of interspersion is thus directly related to the spatial arrangement and diversity of habitat type
How I Fell in Love with Writing
This is a story of being a first-generation student to come to America. This article includes the hardships of my arrival and how my relationship with writing grew because of the support of my English instructor
AN EPIGRAPHIC· GEOGRAPHY OR KILROY (amongst others) WAS HERE
Vigorous debate has raged virtually since Columbus\u27 discovery of America over who the American Indians were, where they came from, how they got here, and what the source of their civilization was. Momentarily, consideration was given to their being a separate creation; not the descendants of the people of Genesis. The Pope settled that by stating firmly that the Indians were God\u27s creatures just as surely as the Spanish and Portuguese were, and as such entitled to all the rights, duties, and privileges thereto appertaining as they say as they cap and gown you
