How Secondary Online Teachers Perceive and Implement Executive Function Strategies in Online Classrooms: A Qualitative Case Study
This qualitative case study explored how secondary online teachers perceive and implement executive function (EF) strategies in fully asynchronous online learning environment. Grounded in the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework and the Unity and Diversity Model of Executive Function, the study examined how instructional practices support cognitive flexibility, working memory, and inhibitory control. Data were collected through interviews, a focus group, and artifacts submitted by eleven secondary online teachers. Using iterative thematic analysis, four key findings emerged: (1) teachers used intentional scaffolding strategies- such as modeling, pacing tools, and checklists to support EF development; (2) they emphasized shifting cognitive responsibility to students and building metacognitive awareness; (3) implementation was challenged by limited training, inconsistent student participation, and lack of systems-level support; and (4) clear structure and consistent teaching presence helped reduce cognitive overload and foster engagement. These strategies supported core EF skills and aligned with the presence constructs in the CoI framework. Findings highlight the need for consistent, practice-based professional development focused on EF strategies in online classrooms. Future research should examine the long-term impact of EF supports on student learning and how professional learning can better equip teachers to design for clarity, structure, and self-regulation
Individuals’ Perspectives on the Location of Tornado Alley and Their Decision to Take Shelter
This paper examines how individual’s views of their location relative to Tornado Alley affects their decision to shelter. Tornado Alley is a common term promoted by the media as an area of the United States thought to have the greatest tornado intensity and frequency. While this term is now considered anachronistic by meteorologists, it is a colloquial term that individuals might use to guide tornado safety-related decisions. For this study, an online survey was used to identify where respondents believed Tornado Alley to be and how their location relative to it affected their decision to take shelter. It was found that one’s perception of the location of Tornado Alley had little influence on behavior. Proximity to tornado warnings was more important. It was also found that maps depicting Tornado Alley are unhelpful and may even cause harm. Instead, maps showing tornado frequency should be used to help people understand the tornado risk for their area

Relationship between fluid intake, hydration status and cortisol dynamics in healthy, young adult males
Background: Previous studies have identified links between fluid intake, hydration related hormones and cortisol measured at one timepoint but have not considered how hydration may influence cortisol dynamics throughout the day. This study assessed associations between hydration status (copeptin, urinary osmolality, urine volume) and habitual fluid intake with cortisol dynamics.
Methods: The day before (DB) a 6-h laboratory visit, 29 male participants (age, 23±4y; BMI, 25.5 ± 4.3 kg/m2; body fat, 17.3 ± 9.3 %) provided 24-h urine samples and a fasted blood sample for hydration status assessment, recorded their 24-h fluid intake for three days prior, and provided 10 saliva samples to assess cortisol dynamics from DB into the evening of the laboratory visit. Calculated indices of cortisol dynamics included: nocturnal cortisol rise (NCR - salivary cortisol rise from bed to awakening), peak salivary cortisol (peak SCORT - highest cortisol of all samples), cortisol awakening response (ΔCAR - difference between high morning sample and awakening sample), area under the curve with respect to ground (AUCG) and increase (AUCI), and diurnal cortisol slope (DCS - rate of change in cortisol from awakening to bed). The relationships between fluid intake or hydration status and cortisol dynamics were analyzed by separating participants into fluid intake tertile groups and by regressing cortisol dynamics on the continuous variables of total fluid intake (TFI) or hydration biomarkers.
Results: There were no between-group differences for ΔCAR (p = 0.89), AUCG (p = 0.57), AUCI (p = 0.48), peak SCORT (p = 0.14), NCR (p = 0.95), DCS (p = 0.22), or serum cortisol (p = 0.61). TFI was not associated with log (peak SCORT) (p = 0.49), ΔCAR (p = 0.61), AUCG (p = 0.76), or AUCI (p = 0.56). Copeptin was not associated with log (peak SCORT) (p = 0.99), ΔCAR (p = 0.22), AUCG (p = 0.69) or AUCI (p = 0.18). Urinary hydration markers were not associated with any measures of cortisol dynamics (p \u3e 0.05). These null effects were consistent when controlling for physical activity, sleep, and body fat percentage.
Conclusion: In the absence of dehydrating stimuli, measures of fluid intake or hydration status may not be associated with cortisol dynamics in young healthy males
The impacts of media richness, blurriness, and beautification of online dating profile visual elements on dating outcomes
Introduction: Online dating is a popular way for individuals to connect today, and the visual elements of an online dating profile have become an essential part of online dating. The current study examined how media richness, visual blurriness, and beautification of an online dating profile’s visual elements would influence online dating outcomes.
Methods: We conducted an online dating experiment with 10 different conditions with younger adults between 18 and 35 (n = 389).
Results: The results showed that the richer visual elements and the beautified selfie in an online dating profile predicted a number of dating outcomes, including stronger perceived positive traits, more favorable profile assessments, and stronger dating intentions. Moreover, we found such impacts to be gendered, where beautification did not change the assessment of the male profiles but significantly improved all assessments of the female profiles.
Discussion: The findings suggested some differences in how visual variations impacted online dating and revealed some interesting differences in the expectations of online dating profile visuals
A Tale of Two Worlds: A Framework for Translating Literary Fiction into Architectural Space
Authors and orators have employed fictional stories for thousands of years as a crucial method for translating narratives, lessons, and intangible culture. These take shape through diverse art forms such as spoken word, visual art, dance, and sculpture. However, in the current age, architecture often neglects its immersive and spatial potential, allowing stories of a site’s heritage to become lost beneath the layers of urban development. This thesis explores design as storytelling, examining how fictional narratives can be translated into architectural space.
The research draws on fictional and speculative narrative architecture, analyzing the use of metaphor, symbol, and allegory as tools to construct spatial narratives. It focuses particularly on allegory as both a literary and architectural device. In literature, allegory is defined as a doubleness of intention that requires interpretation. In Architecture, this often takes the form of narrative space with underlying meanings intended to teach or reveal deeper truths. The purpose of the thesis is to generate a design method that explores translation across mediums. The goal is not to merely copy a story but to reinterpret and transform it into architectural form, spatial relationships, and experiential qualities.
This thesis selects Haruki Murakami’s Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World as a literary fiction to explore architectural translation. The novel, which is both a hard-boiled detective story and a surrealist fantasy, alternates between two narratives in the even and odd-numbered chapters. While initially distinct, the interconnectedness of the stories becomes apparent through recurring events, characters, and objects. Thematically, Murakami uses this plot structure to explore allegories of duality and identity.
The analysis begins with a close reading of the novel’s plot structure and key moments. Through textual analysis, design rules are established before developing diagrammatic drawings that explore spatial possibilities. These diagrams serve as a bridge between literary criticism and architectural investigation. The plot structure is reimagined as a sequence of spaces, while individual moments become distinct spatial experiences.
The design method follows a reflective and cyclical process, transitioning from two-dimensional diagrams to hybrid three-dimensional models and back into drawings—continually refining the narrative potential of each spatial construct. Finally, the abstract concepts of plot and moment are applied to a real site, exploring how allegory can be translated into a dual museum of Ecology and Human Development located in South Downtown Atlanta. The thesis becomes a critical method for investigating Allegorical Narrative through architectural constructs, employing space to tell stories
Genetic Influences on Individual Variability in Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) Social Behavior
While primates are considered highly social animals, the evolutionary origins and mechanisms underlying their social behaviors remain unclear. Not only do they exhibit an extensive range of behaviors, but individuals within the same species can also vary widely in their social interactions. Genetics play a significant role in shaping these individual variations in behavior; multiple genetic variants have been associated with differences in social behavior in mammals. Examples of these include MAOA and OXTR genes, which influence the expression of behaviors associated with antisocial and prosocial temperaments. Genetic polymorphisms affect primate interactions, impacting an individual’s ability to maintain its status in dominance hierarchies, compete for resources, and protect offspring. Therefore, diversity in social behavior also plays a crucial role in primate fitness. Socially adept individuals can form stronger bonds and have greater fitness than their antisocial counterparts. Current research focuses on polymorphisms in monkeys and humans, with few studies performed in nonhuman apes, such as gorillas. This thesis investigates the relationship between individual variation in social behavior and polymorphisms in the MAOA and OXTR genes in 11 western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). Using behavioral observation data collected across 25 ten-minute focal samples per subject, sociability was measured through social proximity scores, as well as affiliative and agonistic behaviors. DNA extracted from whole blood samples was then used to identify genotypes of these subjects at two candidate loci: the MAOA promoter VNTR region and the OXTR SNP rs35062132. Results indicate significant individual variation in social behavior, with social group as a significant predictor of social proximity scores. No variation was detected in the OXTR region among the sampled subjects, but divergence from other great apes at select nucleotide sites was identified. Multiple genotypes were observed in the gorilla MAOA promoter VNTR region, including novel 0-, 3-, and 5-repeat alleles not previously reported in published literature. However, due to statistical power being limited by the sample size, no conclusions were drawn from the MAOA genotyping results and their potential influence on the significant behavioral differences observed. These findings highlight the value of integrating behavioral and genetic approaches in great apes and underscore the need for further research into the biological basis of social variation in gorillas
