Long-term patterns and mechanisms of plant invasions in forests: the role of forest age and land-use history
Get PDFIt has become increasingly apparent that even mature forests are susceptible to plant invasions. However, invasive plants are often more abundant in younger forest stands. It is difficult to disentangle possible mechanisms that would explain this pattern due to the scarcity of long-term studies in successional forests. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain patterns of invasions as forests age, including biotic resistance, window of opportunity, historical legacies, and invasion debt. We explored patterns and potential mechanisms of plant invasions over 70 years in a regenerating forest with different land-use histories in the Bolleswood Natural Area, Connecticut, USA. We examined how environmental factors related to colonization patterns of invasive and non-invasive introduced species over time, and whether these patterns were consistent with the proposed mechanisms. Non-invasive introduced species declined rapidly with canopy closure, while many invasive plants persisted or even increased over time as the forest aged. Colonization was focused in younger post-agricultural areas, although this declined with time. Dispersal distance, soil conditions, and land-use history played important roles in patterns of colonization, while the effect of shading was less clear. There was some evidence for each mechanism, but the relative importance of each mechanism was species-dependent, making generalizations about how invasive plants invade forests difficult. We found that land-use history impacted invasion more strongly than forest age, but over time even mature forests were slowly being invaded by some species. Thus, invasive species management may be required even in mature forests

Using Repeat Photography to Document the Effects of Climate Change on Glaciers in Iceland Change on Glaciers in Iceland
Get PDFClimate change is a worldwide, multifaceted phenomenon that impacts our world today and will continue to impact our world in the future with even greater severity. Although climate change can sometimes be considered an abstract topic due to its being somewhat intangible, one direct way of observing the effects of climate change is by studying glaciers. This study combines a literature review with repeat photography in order to demonstrate the tangible effects of climate change on glaciers in Iceland and explore the secondary impacts on sea level elevation (SEL), water availability and distribution, hydropower, natural hazards, and tourism in Iceland. The literature review explores past research on both short-term and long-term glacial changes as well as future glacial change projections in Iceland. Results of the literature review showed a general consensus that Iceland’s glaciers have been steadily declining since the early 1990s, with one study even determining that over a 129-year study period, half of the observed mass change on Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland (-240 +/- 20 Gt) occurred during geological years 1994/1995 and 2018/2019 (Aðalgeirsdóttir, G. et al., 2020). For repeat photography, the outline of Vatnajökull glacier from photographs taken in 2013 and 2023 were compared, showing a general trend of glacial volume loss occurring throughout the 10-year period, aligning with the results of the literature review. By using the highly visual nature of repeat photography and combining it with the review of previous glacial research, this study allows for scientific research surrounding the effects of climate change on glaciers to be easily visible to the general public, thus rendering a previously considered intangible concept tangible. This study may, therefore, be seen as a starting point for bridging the gap between scientific discourse surrounding climate change and information for the general public

En este artículo, defiendo la importancia de comprender la poesía al interno de las epistemes de las culturas manuscrita y digital, en contraste con la percepción de la poesía como parte de la cultura impresa que sigue siendo prevalente en nuestro campo de estudios, en nuestras instituciones y en la imaginación colectiva.

How can it be argued that poetry appreciation has declined in comparison to the past, when the invectives of Eanes do Coton to Pero da Ponte could never have imagined receiving the praise or rejection of stadiums and squares, as it happens with the partimen starring Marithea, Wos, Sara Socas, and Aczino? In this paper, I argue for the need to comprehend poetry in the context of manuscript and digital culture, as opposed to the print-culture image of poetry that survives in our field, our institutions, and in our collective imagination
The Capacity of An Unfaltering Duress: America\u27s Lost Love Stories
No full textThis thesis interrogates the imbrication between negative subjectivity and the fiction writing of Gayl Jones. In doing so, this work reimagines conceptions of intimate and interpersonal love, community, and retributive violence in the face of conditional (anti)Blackness. Through an engagement with contemporary scholars of Black Studies and with the help of the abundant archive of Black music, this project aims to prioritize, reproduce, and heed to Black Artistic registers of feeling that embrace duress, destruction, and madness. Through her literary performance, Jones reproduces and fabulates moments of Black social life that expand and simultaneously shatter our conception of a given and universal human subjectivity. What can be extracted from Jones’s writings, particularly Corregidora, Ensinaça, and Chile Woman, are the ways that (anti)Blackness shapes, destroys, and incentivizes the relational possibilities of the world. This paper proposes the embrace of the negative subject position as a preliminary beginning to catalyze a future without (anti)Blackness
