    A Journalist\u27s Summer Internship

    No full text
The summer of 25 was essential for my future career as a journalist. I interned at The Melrose Messenger, a local online publication run by a resident of Melrose. I wrote multiple articles detailing community events, city budget cuts, and local zoning ordinances. I also tried my hand at the publication’s social media, recording and editing two videos to post on our Instagram page. The experience helped build my repertoire of clips to use when applying to jobs, hone research and writing skills that will be necessary as I take on bigger tasks, and forced me to work and communicate remotely, which offered challenges in itself. Most importantly, my internship helped me solidify my interest in journalism, and I will continue to pursue the venture in the future. With the connections I have built and the experience I now have from this summer, I will apply for larger scale internships next summer

    No full text
This reflection summarizes my experience as a summer intern at the Marine Biological Laboratory through the NSF REU Biological Discovery program in Woods Hole. Selected from over 800 applicants, I gained my first research experience under the mentorship of a scientist studying corals and algae. My project focused on testing novel substrates to track coral and algal growth, which required learning advanced lab techniques such as using a microscope. Beyond technical training, I developed important professional skills, including time management, organization, and scientific communication, resulting in presenting my findings through a research poster at a symposium. Although I initially faced challenges adapting to laboratory work and integrating into the research team, I grew more confident and connected over time. This experience not only provided valuable scientific and professional skills but also clarified my career interests, highlighting my passion for fieldwork and exploration of marine environments over a strictly lab based career
