Internship at Steve & Kate\u27s Camp
This reflection explores my internship as a Camp Counsellor at Steve & Kate’s Camp in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a full-day childcare programme operating from 8 am to 6 pm. My goals were to gain practical experience in non-traditional childcare settings and to observe how freedom and structure interact to support children’s social-emotional growth. Over the summer, I strengthened my adaptability, communication, and leadership skills while managing the challenges of working in a high-volume camp with upwards of 200 children per day. Although I successfully navigated large groups, the constant demands became overwhelming, leading me to recognise my preference for more structured environments. Overall, the experience deepened my interest in child development and people-centred work
American Heart Association- Marshall University Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
This reflection paper recounts my summer experience as a research intern in the American Heart Association Marshall Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (AM SURE) at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Coming from a background in qualitative research, I entered the program eager to develop wet lab skills and gain exposure to cardiovascular science. Through hands-on training in cell culturing, microscopy, and data analysis using Fiji and Prism, I not only built technical proficiency but also grew in confidence, independence, and scientific communication. This internship affirmed my interest in pursuing research during my gap year before medical school and deepened my appreciation for how research and clinical care intersect. The challenges I faced, especially learning new lab techniques from scratch, ultimately helped me grow as both a student and an aspiring physician
