The program involved one week of surgical shadowing in Jinja, Uganda in a resource limited hospital, followed by a 5 week fellowship as part of a research team in the rural village of Mpunde. My team facilitated focus groups with community stakeholders discussing potential improvement to treatment of severe mental illness in the area. My goals were to gain practical experience in non-traditional childcare settings and to observe how freedom and structure interact to support children’s social-emotional growth. Over the summer, I strengthened my adaptability, communication, and leadership skills while managing the challenges of working in a high-volume camp with upwards of 200 children per day. Although I successfully navigated large groups, the constant demands became overwhelming, leading me to recognise my preference for more structured environments. Overall, the experience deepened my interest in child development and people-centred work
