This past summer I worked for the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple A baseball affiliate of the Washington Nationals. I had the opportunity to work with some very talented individuals in the sports industry and learned and acquired many new skills that can be used in many platforms of life. I pursued my love and passion for sports, in this case baseball, while gaining great experience in writing, communication, and editing

Work-Life Stress in Japan: Exploring the Physiological Factors Behind Karōshi and Karōjisatsu

This study explores how personal and workplace-related factors influence perceived stress, anxiety, and depression among individuals in Japan, particularly those in salaryman-type occupations. Participants completed a self-report survey assessing variables such as number of children, work hours, perceived job control, esteem, influence, and promotional opportunities. The data was analyzed using bivariate Pearson correlations to identify relationships between these variables and mental health outcomes. Results revealed several significant findings. A strong positive correlation was found between the number of children and depression levels, while longer working hours were associated with decreased feelings of job reward, though not with increased stress. Additionally, perceived promotional opportunities and workplace esteem were negatively correlated with anxiety and stress, respectively. Contrary to the initial hypothesis, individuals with less perceived influence at work reported higher stress levels, suggesting that a lack of control may be more detrimental than high responsibility. These findings shed light on the psychological burden of hierarchical, rigid work environments. Although the sample size was small (n=6), this study offers possible initial insight into the psychosocial stressors contributing to issues like karōshi (death from overwork) and karōjisatsu (suicide due to overwork)

What Sacrifice Looks Like: Stories from Mixed-Status Latine Families in NYC

    Get PDF
What Sacrifice Looks Like explores the lived realities of mixed-status Latine families in New York City, shedding light on how immigration policies, legal precarity, and cultural expectations shape their everyday experiences. Drawing on survey responses and in-depth interviews with individuals from these families, this study examines the emotional, psychological, and material sacrifices made in the face of systemic exclusion. Themes of family separation, generational responsibility, and the pressure to embody the “quintessential immigrant” emerge as central to understanding how (i)legality affects identity, family dynamics, and aspirations. Grounded in a human development lens and informed by scholarship on immigrant justice, this project aims to honor the resilience of Latino communities while advocating for more inclusive and compassionate immigration policies

Wine as Gossip: The Making of Living Objects and Human Experience

    Get PDF
In this honors study Wine as Gossip: The Making of Living Objects and Human Experience, I argue that there is an inherent power to wine as a means to subvert the narrative of the current American myth. I emphasize how the living nature of wine reflects how objects can have a level of consciousness and power. In the opening chapter, “Gossip and Wine: Uncovering Forms of Resistance and Methods to Subvert and Revise Power Structures” gossip serves as a means to understand how wine can be used in this subversion. I argue that wine and gossip are linked in their ability to rise up against power structures. Using the work of Patricia Meyer Spacks and her article “In Praise of Gossip” as well as popular culture references, like wine magazine Noble Rot and Apple TV show Drops of God, I argue that wine and gossip are positive structures that are ever changing and evolving with the individual. The second chapter “Drinking Essence: The Power of Wine as Gossip Through James Hemings and Thomas Jefferson” is a case study of how wine can be understood as a form of gossip through this historical lens. I argue that wine created the means and type of consciousness, building on W.E.B Du Bois’ work in The Souls of Black Folk, that Hemings needed in order to act upon his own right to freedom. Particularly how wine as a living object could offer a way of existing outside the bounds of formality and whiteness. In the short epilogue I apply my theory of third consciousness, essence, and the ways which gossip functions through objects such as wine to challenge power structures in Charles Chesnutt’s story “The Goophered Grapevine”. This story encompasses how wine has the power to capture and transform social bounds and dynamics of existence
