    Get PDF
This paper explores the relationship pharmaceutical companies have with the overprescription of mental health medication, highlighting unethical marketing practices and their impact on prescription patterns. Previous literature addresses unethical pharmaceutical company marketing strategies, relationships within the field, and cost differences. This study includes qualitative insights from professionals in the field. Interviews conducted collected information that showed the prevalence of mental health illnesses, how treatments are prescribed, and the extent of pharmaceutical influence. Initial findings suggest a significant push for medication as it is the most common treatment method for mental health illnesses. This study highlights pharmaceutical companies\u27 profit-driven motives and their effects on individuals\u27 mental health treatments

Sports Economics and Regional Prosperity: Exploring the Economic Impacts of Success of “Big Four” Teams

    Get PDF
Recent years have seen massive increases in government spending on sports stadiums and overall sports investments. The justification for this trend is that sports create positive externalities that can boost the overall economy of a region that the team resides in. However, economists cannot come to a unified conclusion about whether a single team can positively impact economic growth. Therefore, this study looks at the effects of a region\u27s largest sports teams, collectively known as the “Big 4.” This includes teams in the MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL. An econometric economic model is used to estimate the relationship between economic variables and measures of sports team success. Results indicate that the NBA, NFL, and MLB all have potential significant positive relationships between different metrics of success and economic growth. However, the NHL’s results indicate no significant results, positive or negative, making it an outlier. This indicates that it is logical for the “Big 4” sports, minus the NHL, to be subject to some level of public investment

The Pitch Clock\u27s Impacts on the Game of Baseball

    Get PDF
Past research has investigated what on-field statistics have impacted the success of MLB teams. However, this paper aims to look at the effect that the recent rule change of the pitch clock has on the win percentage of MLB teams. With the implementation of the pitch clock, it was expected that teams with a lower average pitch time would see more success. Using data from the 2013-2024 seasons, statistical analysis was run to determine which variables impacted team win percentage the most. It was found that average pitch times of pitchers did not play a significant role in overall team success. However, on the defensive side of the ball, ERA was found to be significant, and batting average, runs and hits were found to be significant on the offensive side of the ball

    Get PDF
This paper thesis examines how the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL has influenced voting behavior within the affected community, specifically regarding candidate and policy preferences related to gun control, mental health support, and school safety. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study incorporates surveys and interviews to capture voters\u27 opinions and attitudes in the aftermath of the tragic event. Public voter data is also analyzed to identify shifts in voting patterns and candidate support over time. The research aims to understand the magnitude to which the Parkland shooting has shaped voters\u27 views and decisions, and whether it has led to a lasting change in political discourse and policy priorities. This analysis seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of how traumatic events can impact electoral behavior and policy considerations within a community and potentially beyond

Mind the Gap: Understanding Why Gen Z’s Sustainability Values Do Not Align with Fashion Purchasing Behavior. Exploring the Factors that Contribute to Values-Behavior Gap

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates the values-behavior gap that exists among Gen Z consumers, specifically investigating why sustainability values often do not translate into sustainable fashion purchasing. Through a multidisciplinary literature review highlighting key economic, marketing, psychological, and anthropological theories of consumer demand, this study identifies the complex motivations behind Gen Z’s fashion choices. A survey distributed to Gen Z respondents (n = 42) measured sustainability values, fashion purchasing habits, and influences across the four different theoretical domains of demand. Respondents were categorized into four subcategories of purchaser based on their sustainability values and consumption behaviors. Analyses had a particular focus on those who exhibited high sustainability values but low sustainable consumption (the “High Low” group). Statistical analyses included a Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test and a Principal Components Regression. Results revelated that fashion-trend engagements both through pressure and enjoyment significantly contribute to the values-behavior gap. Additionally, social and economic influences related to price sensitivity were also found to be associated with lower sustainable consumption. The findings emphasize the importance of trend culture and affordability in understanding consumer behavior relative to sustainable purchasing. This study contributes to the broader existing research on sustainable consumption by highlighting the nuanced drivers of Gen Z’s decision-making processes
