    An Empirical Analysis of Prime Performing Age of NBA Players; When Do They Reach Their Prime?

    This empirical research paper investigates the prime performing age of NBA players from the perspective of General Managers. The study aims to identify the age range in which players are most effective on the court and to determine if there is a significant relationship between age and player performance. Player performance statistics data was collected from ESPN and analyzed to help determine at what age players reach their prime productivity levels for a team. The findings suggest that the prime performing age of NBA players is between 27 and 31 years old, with a slight decline in performance after the age of 32. The results have important implications for team management and player recruitment strategies

    More Than Just a Game? The Impact of Athletic Team Performances of Advertisement Appeal

    The goal of this study was to determine the effects that an athletic team\u27s performance may have on the ways in which their fans view advertisements. Conducted using a 2 (game: basketball vs. baseball) x 2 (outcome: win vs. loss) x 2 (score: blowout vs. close game) experimental study created within Qualtrics, we set out to determine how the type of game, outcome, and score may all affect advertisement appeal. Using clips from a Celtics vs Lakers game as well as a Red Sox vs Yankees game, we created short video clips that were designed to replicate the experience of watching a live broadcast of a sporting event. The 170 college-aged participants were then asked to complete a short survey which was used to gauge their feelings towards 3 different advertisements which were shown after the sports clip. Using this data, we were able to find an interesting relationship between the type of game, how the game type affected each participant\u27s perception of a positive score or outcome, and finally, how these perceptions influenced advertisement appeal among viewers. This study provided crucial information to sports marketers which may be used to determine how to best allocate their advertising budget during major sporting events

    Close Your Eyes and Open Your Mind: How Closed Eyes Affect Evaluations of Utilitarian and Hedonic Advertising Appeals

    Purpose Drawing on embodied cognition and construal level theory perspectives in marketing literature, the purpose of this study is to propose that closed eyes make events appear distant and increase high-level construal and abstract processing, whereas opened eyes make events appear near and increase low-level construal and concrete processing. The authors further argue that high (low) construal level induced by closed (open) eyes increases favoritism toward utilitarian (hedonic) appeals. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on embodied cognition and construal level theory, the authors conduct three studies to investigate how consumers form varying distance perceptions and attitudes toward advertising appeals depending on whether they open or close their eyes while contemplating the messages. In Study 1, the authors tested the effects of an advertisement featuring utilitarian versus hedonic appeals in a food waste reduction campaign. In Study 2, the authors tested the effects of an advertisement stressing utilitarian versus hedonic aspects of a brand of travel products. In Study 3, the authors tested the effects of an advertisement for hotel reward products depending on consumption motivations. Findings The studies support the hypothesis by showing that when individuals close their eyes, they form abstract processing styles (high-level construal), perceive events as more distant and increase preferences for utilitarian advertising appeals; when they open their eyes, they form concrete processing styles (low-level construal), perceive events as nearer and indicate preferences for hedonic advertising appeals. Originality/value The novel insight of this study shows how bodily sensations may affect various types of hedonic and utilitarian advertising appeals. This study contributes to the embodied cognition and construal level literature, but the contribution of this study is particularly important for marketers and advertisers in that the authors show interactions between open or closed eyes, hedonic or utilitarian product aspects and processing styles

    Getting an A with the 3Cs: Chromosome Conformation Capture for Undergraduates

    Chromosome conformation capture (3C) is a powerful tool that has spawned a family of similar techniques (e.g., Hi-C, 4C, and 5C, referred to here as 3C techniques) that provide detailed information of the three-dimensional organization of chromatin. The 3C techniques have been used in a wide range of studies, from monitoring the changes in chromatin organization in cancer cells to identifying enhancer contacts made with gene promoters. While many of the studies using these techniques are asking big genome-wide questions with intricate sample types (i.e., single-cell analysis), what is often lost is that the 3C techniques are grounded in basic molecular biology methods that are applicable to a broad range of studies. By addressing tightly focused questions of chromatin organization, this cutting-edge technique can be used to enhance the undergraduate research and teaching lab experience. This paper presents a 3C protocol and provides adaptations and points of emphasis for implementation at primarily undergraduate institutions in undergraduate research and teaching experiences

    When Distinction Disguises Discrimination: A Look at Female and Non-White CEO Performance

    Extant research presents superior performance of women CEOs as evidence in support of differences between the genders. We argue that this body of research suffers from joint hypothesis problem. Although it is possible that female executives are superior, another possibility could be that discriminatory practices impose higher entry barriers allowing for only above-average female executives to occupy these positions. We find that stratified by gender and ethnicity, the female CEO of color emerges as best performer, followed by white female CEOs and men CEOs of color. The white male CEO is among the worst performers. The woman of color faces the highest barriers as she is subject to both gender and ethnic discrimination. Thus, those from this group who do manage to make it to top are among the best performers
