Death of Young Women in Media: The Origins of Obsession and a Sentiment Analysis on the Broader Contemporary Cultural Impact
Media has affected popular culture for hundreds of years in Western literature: from non-fiction stories to news coverage, to online publications. The tone, as well as source material chosen, not only indicates what society views as important, but also influences a culture’s shared beliefs. This paper explores the origins of women as objects in narrative structures, and then analyzes the more modern impacts of this trope. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the reasons behind why young women are disproportionately the victims in violent crimes in all forms of media coverage. The survey data collected will be used as a case study to see if the stereotypes of women hold true in a real-world setting. The survey will find out whether or not famous media cases of character, as well as real life deaths, are more memorable depending on the age and sex of the victim. Data will also be collected through sentiment analysis to see how news coverage reports on different kinds of victims. The three case studies will be on Gabby Petito, Jelani Day, and Maya Millete. A review of lexicon categories from the data will be used to categorize the feelings that the cases evoked. Finally, a Word Cloud will be used to create a visual representation of the most famous murder cases the survey respondents have heard of. The results support the idea that media unequally focuses on the deaths of young women. This unequal treatment has long lasting emotional effects on the audience. Media’s attention isn’t inherently unethical, but their practices now are. There needs to be equal coverage of all types of victims, and it shouldn’t be so focused on the nature of the crime but celebrate who the victim was instead
Advancing Healthcare Through the Integration of Digital Twins Technology: Personalized Medicine’s Next Frontier
The use of Digital Twin technology has been expanding rapidly, and projections indicate that it will continue to proliferate across various applications, use cases, and industries, including healthcare. In recent years, the healthcare sector has seen an acceleration in digital transformation. This fast-paced change offers both opportunities and risks, especially with emerging technologies like digital twins, which are relatively untested and still in the early stages of adoption in medical care. This paper aims to conduct a literature review to explore how digital twins facilitate intelligent automation in healthcare. It defines the concept, traces the technology’s evolution and development, reviews its key enabling technologies, and examines current trends and challenges. The paper also presents a range of application examples in personalized medicine and public health, concluding with a succinct discussion of the primary technical and ancillary challenges, as well as the ethical issues that arise when applying digital twin technology to human subjects
Perceptions of Faculty and Students in Online Learning: Lessons From the COVID-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly changed how universities provide education -- teachers switched to online teaching methods, while students quickly adapted to the online learning environment. This study adopts the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework to examine differences in student and faculty perceptions of online learning due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Student and faculty perceptions can be used to evaluate and ultimately improve the quality of education. This study used survey methods and data collection instruments with a Likert scale sample of 150 students and 150 faculty from a US university. This study’s results indicate a significant difference between perceptions of pedagogy, technology challenges, and difficulties in online Zoom courses. Furthermore, the authors provide practical implications for educators and administrators to navigate the rapid growth in online learning
The Cleared Leaf Epidermis (CLE) Technique: An Improved Method for Botanical and Paleobotanical Studies
The Cleared Leaf Epidermis (CLE) technique was developed in the Laboratory for Terrestrial Environments to solve problems with traditional botanical and paleobotanical methods. The CLE is an improvement upon conventional Cleared Leaf (CL) technique in that it allows for precise measurement of three-dimensional epidermal characteristics and micromorphological features. The technique was first introduced in Liang et al 2022a and Liang et al 2022b.
