Sharing Through Self-Disclosure: Conceptualizations and Measurement in Organizations
No full textSelf-disclosure is sharing personal information with another party, which is recognized in psychology as a behavior that acts as a vehicle promoting well-being. Recently, self-disclosure studies in the organizational context have gained increasing prominence. Yet, a classification of the variety of possible self-disclosure in this setting and the effects of self-disclosure on organizational outcomes at the different levels of analysis (i.e., individual, interpersonal, and group levels) have received relatively little empirical and theoretical attention from management scholars. This symposium explores various types of self-disclosure, including disclosure of multi-racial identity, disclosure of personal weaknesses, disclosure of a miscarriage, and disclosure of holding multiple jobs. The exploration takes place across very different contexts. The symposium presents five papers – one conceptual review/model, one experimental study, one qualitative study, and two survey studies – examining different types of self-disclosure and its effects as well as its role in organizations across levels. Specifically, the first paper discusses new theoretical insights into the role of self-disclosure in fostering fluidity for multiracial individuals. Also, based on the idea of disclosing information perceived as a weakness, the second paper explores the influence of congruence between the level of self-disclosure wanted and received by followers on trust felt by followers. The third paper investigates the role of virtual disclosure of private medical information related to remote work conditions during the pandemic to a group of colleagues. The fourth paper delves into female employee’s position to self-disclosure. It identifies the different miscarriage disclosure decision-making paths women experience. The final paper examines the role of multiple jobholder disclosure on employees’ psychological well-being (i.e., life satisfaction and job stress) through a sense of authenticity and attention residue or the attention multiple job workers give to these jobs. These papers feature myriad types of self-disclosures in organizations to clarify the conceptualization and measurement of self-disclosure. We believe this symposium is an important step towards encouraging scholars to consider “opening up” conceptualizations and measurement of self-disclosure in organizations, which are representative and inclusive of individual experiences –ultimately important for fostering conditions of individual potential for innovation in the workplace
Alcohol Reward Memory in Drosophila: Investigating Changes in Neural Activity in Response To Cues Alcohol Associations and Their Role in Regulating Other Alcohol-Related Behaviors.
Get PDFWith more than 200 health conditions associated with Alcohol Use Disorder, excessive drinking can take a serious toll on an individual\u27s health, mental health, and relationships. Despite significant disruptions, there are a few treatments for Alcohol Use Disorder that support long-term abstinence. To develop effective long-term treatments for Alcohol Use Disorder, it is essential to obtain an understanding of the underlying complex changes that alcohol has on the brain, however, the complexity of the mammalian nervous system has precluded researchers from achieving this. Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful model organism for investigating how alcohol hijacks neural circuits within the brain due to its complex yet tractable brain. Previous studies in Drosophila identified neuronal circuits important for the acquisition and expression of alcohol reward memory. Alcohol Reward Memory expression includes cholinergic and dopaminergic neurons that innervate a learning and memory structure within the brain called the Mushroom Body. Here, we investigate how the neural activity of requisite cholinergic neurons changes while flies learn to associate odor cues with alcohol intoxication and whether these alcohol reward memory neurons modulate other alcohol-related behaviors. Understanding how alcohol changes memory circuits in Drosophila and how their behaviors are impacted can inform how alcohol disrupts reward circuitry in other species
The Electoral College: Representative Accuracy, Public Opinion, & Proposed Reform
Get PDFIn recent years, there has been a lot of criticism of the Electoral College coming from scholars, the public, and some politicians. This paper will investigate the creation and history of the Electoral College before analyzing the accuracy of its representation of voters and current public opinion of the Electoral College. The data collected for this research will assist in the analysis and comparison of proposed ideas to highlight reform that would be the most effective for the U.S. population and election cycles in the future. Qualitative research will be used to analyze the Electoral College and surrounding themes. Findings will include a clear evaluation of the Electoral College; the accuracy of its representation, the public’s opinion of it, and existing ideas for reform. An analysis of the findings will then be conducted in order to create three criteria for evaluating the existing proposed reform. Ultimately this evaluation in addition to the analysis and comparison of seven proposed reform ideas will lead to suggestions on the best way for the United States to move forward. At the conclusion of the paper, the Proportional Plan will be determined as the proposed solution, or the best current option for implementation
Social Media and Tracking Apps\u27 Impact on Trust and Satisfaction Between Romantic Partners
Get PDFSocial media is a form of technology that is on a constant rise, especially in areas of both growth and development. The world has been continuing to change in many ways because of it and the connections made between individuals have been affected. An area specifically impacted by social media is relational communication between romantic partners. Social media’s rise allows individuals to disclose information about themselves with a simple click of a button. This enables others to view stereotypes and compare their lives with others, which could be seen as an unrealistic standard. This thesis focuses on the discovery of digital media’s positive and negative attributes and how they impact trust levels and relational satisfaction between college-aged students who are currently involved in a romantic relationship or have recently ended a romantic relationship in the last six months. There has been data collected from college-aged students to discover the true impact that these platforms hold on trust and relational satisfaction. Analyses have been collected through regressions and correlations to predict findings associated with the focused research questions of this study. The behaviors and attitudes of college-aged students based on survey results will provide insight on the true impact of content and tracking apps and how it is impacting trust and satisfaction in these relationships
Implementing Universal Design for Learning in Financial Literacy Education
Get PDFThe purpose of the study is to understand what students currently know regarding financial literacy, what learning style they use in the classroom, and how to fuse the two into a simple and informational version of financial literacy education. Financial literacy education can be used to increase household savings for retirement, personal financial goals, and risk management purposes. By joining the concept of UDL and Financial Literacy Education, each obstacle listed can be improved upon. Learning styles focus attention onto three different approaches to teaching that are based in auditory, visual, and kinesthetic pedagogies. UDL focuses on curating individual learning curriculum based on multiple means of engagement, representation, and action & expression. Both aim to foster the most effective form of student’s learning. Focusing the research on financial literacy education can be achieved through in-depth analyses of past case studies and by conducting surveys amongst extreme users of financial services. In the study, sample questions are geared towards understanding an individual’s proficiency of financial literacy, understanding their learning styles, and designing the most effective approach to teaching fundamentals of finance. Results suggest that fusing learning styles into financial literacy education contributes towards student comprehension of finances. Students utilize the visual approach most, which may be due to the increase in digitalization and overreliance on virtual devices
Forecasting Demand for Recreational Cannabis in Rhode Island
Get PDFIn 2012, Colorado and Washington legalized the recreational use of cannabis for any person over the age of 21. Since then, many other states have followed in their footsteps including Rhode Island. The cannabis industry is booming and has a supply chain that is demanding and changes daily. One key concept of supply chain management is forecasting, which is a prediction of demand based on past sales data as well as other external factors. The goals of this exploratory study are to determine the most accurate technique for forecasting demand and use that technique to forecast demand in the newly legalized market in Rhode Island and create a framework that could be applied by other states that are thinking about legalization. Different methods of forecasting will be used including time series methods and regressions to determine if there are external factors that may affect demand. The data collection for this project included past sales data from states that have already legalized recreational cannabis. Additionally, interviews of dispensary owners were conducted to determine if there are external factors that could be affecting demand. The findings and framework that will result from this project could be implemented by other states to project demand

Throughout their four years at Bryant, Ellen Wilson Leadership Fellows have access to intensive co-curricular leadership training, stipends, and other opportunities.
The program awards $5,000 stipends annually to 20 incoming first-year students who show strong leadership skills or an interest in building skills. Preservation of Plant-Wax Biomarkers in Deserts: Implications for Quaternary Environment and Human Evolutionary Studies
Get PDFAnalysis of plant-wax biomarkers from sedimentary sequences can enable past environmental and hydrological reconstruction and provide insights into past hominin adaptations. However, biomarker preservation in desert contexts has been considered unlikely given the sparse nature of the vegetation within the landscape. Here we evaluate the preservation of n-alkanes and fatty acids collected from four depositional sequences associated with archaeological contexts in the Nefud Desert, Saudi Arabia, and the Thar Desert, India. Pleistocene and Holocene samples were selected to understand the effects of age on preservation. The results of molecular distribution patterns and indices, particularly the high carbon preference index and average chain length, show the preservation of plant-wax biomarkers in both the Holocene and Pleistocene desert sequences, while δ13C values and organic content provide insights into the vegetation contributing to the plant-wax organic pool. This study provides a baseline for understanding human–environment interactions and for reconstructing changes in arid land habitats of relevance to hominins during the Quaternary
