P5_9 Wolves, Deer, and a Python...Model
In this paper, we present our Python model which determines the consequences of Grey Wolf reintroduction on Red Deer numbers in a small area of Scotland. The model is constructed using the Lotka-Volterra method and integrated via the Runge-Kutta method. We find that introducing a single pack of 10 wolves reduces the deer numbers and creates an oscillation in population with a period of 10 years
P4_6 Horses make the world go round
The aim of this paper was to determine the feasibility of some factors of the Helios mythology, and to find the force that would be required to accelerate Earth from rest to its current angular velocity. We found that the force required to achieve this in a single day, is 1.39 × 1022 N which is extremely large considering Helios is only using four winged horses. This combined with there being no practical way to apply this force to the Earth, led to us concluding that it was not feasible
A5_3 Sonic the Dead-Hog
Sonic is the protagonist of a video game series that goes by the same name. The games revolvearound sonic crossing obstacles at high speed. A signature of Sonic is that he rolls himself up into a ball and spins up to bolt off at the speed of sound. In this paper we will be looking at the heat Sonic produces from the friction of spinning up to this high speed and the conequences this has on him. Moreover, we will demonstrate that the generated energy per second of 89kJ leads to a temperature increase of 850°C per second in Sonic. Lastly, we will briefly cover why he cannot roll at a linear speed of the speed of sound due to limited frictional torque the ground can provide
A1_11 The Mexican Wave
In this paper a Mexican Wave is compared to and assumed to be similar to a wave on a string. The maximum energy able to be transferred along the 'Mexican wave' is calculated to be 1300 W which is multiplied out to your average section of crowd in a stadium in total generating up to 35 KW. This energy is compared to how much money could be saved for the stadium per hour, of 11.9 p, from the power used of typical devices in a stadium
P4_7 Santa’s Jet
In the movie Elf Santa replaces the waning Christmas spirit with a jet engine. We have calculated the speed required to allow Santa’s sleigh filled with presents to fly. This speed is 5500(±1700)ms−1 . This would require a thrust produced by the engine of 3.8(±2.2) × 107N
P5_8 A Mechanised Mitigation of a Mayonnaise Mess-Up
In this paper, an analysis is carried out of an aviation propeller strapped to an office chair as a life-saving device. If one were to find themselves in trouble, this device would be able to hold a human atop the mayonnaise surface, averting disaster. The rotational speed necessary for the propeller was calculated in this paper via consideration of the coefficient of thrust. The rate required was found to be 6.5804 rad/s
Exhibiting Extinction, Recovering Memory, and Contesting Uncertain Futures in the Museum
This paper builds upon qualitative research in El Museo del Bucardo – The Bucardo Museum – an exhibition space in the village of Torla, high in the Spanish Pyrenees. The bucardo was declared extinct on 6 January 2000 and rose to international fame three years later when scientists in Zaragoza delivered a bucardo clone; this event is commonly portrayed around the world as ‘the first de-extinction’. Taxidermic remains of the last bucardo were absent from public view for years, yet they finally returned to Torla in 2013 following years of campaigning from local activists, and El Museo del Bucardo was founded. I draw upon interviews and archival material to present an environmental history of the bucardo as told through the lens of the museum, one which sets out to ‘recover memory’ and institutionalize the bucardo’s legacy. In the museum, bucardo afterlives continue to shape understandings of situated Pyrenean wildlife. I examine El Museo del Bucardo’s role in generating meaning in an epoch characterized by mass extinction and the spectacle of technofixes in the form of de-extinction science
Community-building through political cartoons in Kenya, South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire
This paper arises from a research project at the University of Leicester, led by Dr Fransiska Louwagie and Dr Di Levine, in collaboration with a broader team of research associates, in particular Drs James Illingworth and Sarah Weidman. The project built on external partnerships with Cartooning for Peace, an international organisation of press cartoonists, and Shout Out UK, an award-winning platform for political and media literacy. The project was funded by the University of Leicester’s Global Challenges Research Fund. It aimed to examine how political cartoons can foster dialogue and exchange in conflict or post-conflict contexts, particularly amongst young people. As a visual medium relying on humour, cartooning has the power to present critical questions in an open and non-threatening manner, triggering dialogue and meaning-making. In line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 the project therefore set out to investigate how political cartoons can help to negotiate local and global tensions and how they engage audiences with conceptions and definitions of community and humanity. It aimed to shed new light on the question of how political cartooning can help to address challenges in (post-)conflict societies, where there is a recognised need for community-driven resilience building. Relating to this, through its focus on press cartoons, it sought to raise awareness of the need for access and freedom of information (SDG 16.10). Following an open call for projects, a commission was made for four series of workshops by external partners working in conflict-and post-conflict situations, in Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa (see appendix for detailed aims of the call)

Sexual and intimate citizenship in a Time of Pandemic.
This paper provides an overview of a transnational research project exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and public health responses to it, on sexual and gendered politics. It sets out a framework for rethinking sexual and intimate citizenship during the COVID-19 pandemic, and draws on examples from India, Italy, Mexico and the UK to illustrate our analysis. We examine how the pandemic has impacted on the everyday negotiation of intimacy and highlighted material inequalities that impact on the lives of women and LGBTQ+ people. We argue that the pandemic has produced new faultlines between women and different groups of LGBTQ+ people, as well as amplifying existing tensions. In addition to identifying these faultlines, we explore the cracks opened by them which might reveal possibilities for new coalitions and alliances in relation to sexual and gendered politics
