    A2_1 Extreme Football Curves

    In this paper, we investigate the conditions needed to kick a ball to form a complete loop. We compare our model to one of the most documented kicks in history, Roberto Carlos' famous free kick against France. We find that our model is in agreement with Carlos' kick, but  from our analysis of the initial conditions, it is not possible to form a complete loop with our model

    In this paper, we investigated the time taken for the famous London landmark the Elizabeth Tower, more commonly known as ’Big Ben’, to melt if it was completely made out of ice. By modelling Big Ben as a perfect cuboid and using equations that define specific latent heat and specific heat capacity we found that it would take 174 days (2 s.f.) for an ice structure the size of Big Ben to melt. We believe that this is a reasonable estimation for the time it would take to melt, since it issuch a large structure

    Within the Star Wars fictional universe, the Death Star was a battle station used by a government called the Galactic Empire and was designed to be able to destroy planets with a “super laser”. For this paper, we considered a method to break apart the Death Star. Jabba the Hutt was a powerful gangster in the Star Wars universe and this paper looks into how the Death Star could have been broken apart by colliding a perfect sphere of multiple Jabba the Hutt characters with the Death Star. We found that the total number of Jabba the Hutt characters was 4.018x10^25

    Curating with Communities for Well-being: Exploring an Amgueddfa Cymru–National Museum Wales Biocultural Collection through Community Workshops

    Biocultural collections include specimens of plant and animal origin, artefacts and documentation. They are important resources for the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, as well as for education and research. Curation of biocultural collections at Amgueddfa Cymru–National Museum Wales is underpinned by the unique legislative framework, the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act (2015). This article presents the findings of a series of six workshops with a range of community groups invited to discuss how the Amgueddfa Cymru Economic Botany Collection can build public understanding of biodiversity and fulfil its well-being duty. Findings indicate participant interest in the collection as a resource that can support learning about the multiple values of plants, the diverse cultural heritage linked to plants and the community connections the collection can support, including within and across cultures, practices and places

    Imagining the Brain, Engaging the Body: Designing Visitor Engagement in Science Exhibition Experiments with Art

    Science museums have increasingly experimented with bringing art into their exhibitions to attract and engage visitors. While the prevalence and popularity of such experiments is growing, research on the rationales for collaboration and their outcomes, as well as the challenges involved, remains scarce. This paper analyzes and discusses how art is used as part of engaging visitors in two contrasting exhibitions about the brain and neuroscience: one using art as illustration of ready-made science, the other inviting artists as co-curators in evoking a feeling of science in the making. Drawing on models of public engagement and art-science collaboration, it discusses how notions of science communication and visitor engagement are imagined and enacted in the two exhibitions, and how they relate to different ‘logics’, or rationales, of interdisciplinary collaboration

We find that the solar wind would exert a force on the telescopeof 5.18×10−3N. We also determine that within 1.89 years the telescope would have crashed backdown to Earth

    There is a well known phrase, “you can’t boil the ocean”, to describe an impossible task. This statement is technically a false statement given a large enough source of energy and enough time. However, is it really possible? In this paper we discuss and discover if you could feasibly boil any ocean in a reasonable time-frame given some assumptions. We discover that the energy required to boil the “easiest” ocean is 6 × 1024J, equivalent to the annual energy output of ∼ 4 × 107 times Canada’s T.C Energy Bruce nuclear generating stations [1]

    In this paper, we investigated the buoyant force acting on the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket booster in the ocean if instead of landing successfully on the ocean platform, it had missed it’s target and sunk to a depth of 1000m and whether this force is greater than the rocket’s weight. If the buoyant force is greater than the rocket’s weight, it would rise to the surface and float allowing for easier recovery. We found a buoyant force of 7.4 MN (2 s.f) compared to a weight of 5.4 MN (2 s.f) meaning the rocket would float
