A4_2 This Barbie is Radioactive
In this paper, we investigate how many Barbies are required to absorb the energy of Oppenheimer’s atomic bomb developed in the Manhattan Project. To do this, we calculate the latent heat of one Barbie to determine how much energy one is able to endure before melting. We find that, to fully absorb the energy from Oppenheimer’s atomic bomb, we would need roughly 4.64 billion Barbies

In this paper, we investigate the properties of Reinhardt’s Rocket Hammer from the video gameOverwatch. We model the hammer with three V2 rocket engines powering the swing instead, and find the thrust force and thus velocity the hammer would be travelling at by the ends of one swing. We find the total thrust Ttotal = 959.7 kN, and the hammer velocity vhammer = 1161ms−
Learning from young people in Gauteng, South Africa, about their experiences of depression: a discussion space report
Across the world, rising youth depression is a pressing concern that has animated researcher and popular media attention. Mostly, this attention has missed that youth depression can be prevented, provided we can discover and mobilize protective mechanisms at different systemic levels that have differential (i.e. the most impactful) value for specific youth in specific cultures and contexts. Importantly, we need to consider what combinations of protective mechanisms matter most and pay more attention to mechanisms in the systems that young people are connected to (like their families and communities).A handful of studies across a diversity of biological, social and environmental sciences are beginning to challenge the overly narrow focus on protective mechanisms at the level of the individual (Arango et al., 2021; Thapar et al., 2022). They show that a wide range of factors, like food security (Teasedale et al., 2021), less polluted or more temperate environments (Sugg et al., 2019; Theron et al., 2022), trusted social connections (Choi et al., 2020), opportunities for school and work engagement and social justice (Minh et al., 2021) matter as much, if not more, than individual resources for youth resilience to depression.Further, the Resilient Youth in Stressed Environments (RYSE) study is showing that these factors work in combination. RYSE-related work on the multisystemic determinants of the psychosocial resilience of youth living in stressed environments in Canada and South Africa (Ungar et al., 2021), has shown that at-risk youth report negligible depression symptoms when they also report greater access to a culturally relevant combination of relational, institutional and ecological resources (Theron et al., 2022).We wondered how these insights would hold up in stressed urban environments. We wanted to learn more about the intersection between multisystemic resources and young peoples’ real life experiences of mental poor health or depression in overcrowded, violent, stressed city spaces. To do this, we held a Discussion Space in Johannesburg in February 2023 to centre the voices of Black 18-24 year olds, and engage them in a participatory approach to navigate this emerging research landscape
Fish Skin as a sustainable alternative to Animal Skin
Fishes generate an enormous amount of waste; despite being used to produce by-products. Humans consume majority of fishes caught or farmed and, fish skin is one of the parts which usually end up as waste. This paper seeks to explores the sensible sourcing of fish skin as a raw material, to produce fish leather, giving a walk-through of the process involved, comparing the skin to those of terrestrials and emphasizing the utilization in various industries
Museums as Complex Systems in the Face of the War
Museums lose their conceptual complexity and polysemy under conditions of war, forced confrontation, and struggles for survival, which may lead to a loss of diversity in the long run. Parametric General Systems analysis allows us to consider a museum as a system and to explore substratum, structural, and conceptual types of simplicity and complexity. Such qualitative analysis makes it possible to move the discussion from the ideological and value sphere to the field of rational and science-based justification. This justification, in turn, illustrates why it is important to maintain complex interpretations in Ukrainian museums during the current war
The Adaptations of Articuno
The bird type Pokémon Articuno has adapted to live in his cold, icy habitat on the Seafoams Islands. This paper discusses the adaptations he has developed and how they benefit him. His small surface area to volume ratio, dense feather arrangement, hydrophobic feathers, and blubber help him conserve heat. His long tail supplies him with extra warmth when he is sleeping. The lock wing mechanism allows him to fly without flapping his wings for thousands of miles. His talons, eyes and strong claws allow him to catch and kill prey quickly.

In this paper, we investigate how much energy is required to keep the animatronics at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria constantly running since the closure of the restaurant. To do this, we calculate the average energy used by an industrial robot working constantly for roughly 7 years. We find that, to keep the animatronics constantly running for this amount of time, a total of 6.6 × 10^11 J are required for each of them, or 6.1 × 10^7 AA batteries
P5 2 Extreme Tea Enthusiasts
The Mariana Trench and Mount Everest are homes to the highest natural changes of atmospheric pressure. These pressure changes affect how long it takes for water to boil. We investigated how long it would take us to make 3 cups of tea at these different pressures. We found that it takes 31s to boil water on Mount Everest and 398s down in the Mariana Trench
P4 2 Maximus Gaseous Exhalius
In “The Adventures of Tintin” a float plane is used to fly across the desert, however, it runs low on fuel. In this paper, we use a similar model plane (Piper PA-18) to determine the plane’s overall energy efficiency given that it was refueled using a belch. We found the efficiency of the plane engine to be 0.814 % based on the fuel of choice being ethanol vapour and only a small amount (0.280 kg), which produced an energy of 1.93 kJ to keep the plane flying for a short period of time
