This paper continues the research done in “A New Solution to Climate Change (i)” and discussesthe feasibility and consequences of negating the effects of climate change via increasing the distancebetween the Sun and the Earth. This is accomplished by calculating the energy required to movethe Earth (168 × 10^30 J), the tangential velocity change of the Earth (a 1.6% decrease) and theresultant change in the period of Earth’s orbit (an increase of 5% to a period of 383 days)

In this paper we analysed the observational abilities of the astronomers in the film ’Armageddon’, where they only identify the asteroid hurtling towards them 18 days before its impact. We found that based on existing infrastructure at the time, they should have had over 6.6 years of notice in order to formulate a response. Additionally, modern technology would spot the asteroid with up to 70,000 years’ notice
Implementing work-based assessments in a level 7 data analytics digital degree apprenticeship: challenges and lessons for HEIs
This paper explores the incorporation of work-based learning in the Digital and Technology Solutions Specialist (DTSS) Master’s degree apprenticeship programme in a London-based Higher Education Institution. Specifically, innovative work-based assessments are introduced aiming at utilising workplace resources while meeting academic requirements. Challenges highlighted include balancing academic requirements and business needs as well as supporting learners, employers and academic staff in embracing and implementing the work-based nature of the assessments without compromising academic standards and quality of learning. Lessons are drawn for higher education institutions that consider introducing similar programmes

Truths and Reconciliation: Reflections on the University of the West Indies and University of Leicester International Summer School 2023
The University of the West Indies and University of Leicester International Summer School is an annual event, a week-long programme of lectures, workshops and social activities aimed at supporting postgraduate research students and early career researchers predominantly from the UK and Caribbean. It is hosted alternately at the University of Leicester and the different campuses of the University of the West Indies, and since its inception has been spearheaded by Dr Lucy Evans and Professor Martin Halliwell at the University of Leicester, Dr Sonjah Stanley Niaah at the University of the West Indies, Mona, and Professor Michael A. Bucknor at the University of Alberta. The 2023 edition was hosted by University of Leicester’s School of Criminology from 5th to 10th of June, under the theme of ‘Crime, (In)Justice, Human Rights’. Sub-topics included crime and culture, histories and legacies, security, surveillance, the police and the state, human rights, gender and sexualities, reproductive rights, the environment, and race. It promised an opportunity to connect with researchers in similar or related fields from around the world, who we may have otherwise not met

Retrospective Thinking: Decolonizing Minerals at National Museums Scotland
This paper explores the mineral specimens held by the Science and Technology department at National Museums Scotland (NMS). It examines what these objects and their provenance reveal about the Museum’s collecting methods and how they reflect and perpetuate colonial attitudes in Britain in the nineteenth century. It is informed by recent work moving the Science and Technology collection to new storage, prompting detailed examination of each object and its records.
Case studies show that stories of the people involved in mining and manufacturing processes are absent from NMS documentation while the collectors and Museum staff loom large. Archival research can remedy this to an extent, but it is time consuming and still leaves an incomplete picture.
The paper considers whether it is possible to set about retrospectively compensating for stories not told and how we can ensure documentation for our contemporary collecting does not follow a similarly biased pattern.
Reinterpreting the Mineral Collections in Rome's Museum of Civilizations
Natural history museums often emphasize technical expertise, which can lead to the isolation of their collections from broader political, cultural, and social contexts. This trend is similarly observed in the presentation of mineral collections, where cultural, historical, and ethical dimensions are frequently overlooked. However, museums with mineral displays have the potential to adopt engagement strategies that foreground the anthropological aspects of these collections. A noteworthy example of this integrative approach is found at the Museum of Civilizations in Rome. This museum hosts ISPRA’s (Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale – Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) geological and historical collections, former collections from the Museum of Italian Africa, and contemporary artworks. The institution merges these aesthetic, scientific, and anthropological collections to advance a decolonized narrative. It also incorporates art installations that enhance the understanding of cultural and political issues facing anthropology and science museums today. This article uses the museum’s innovative approach as a case study to explore the intersection of scientific and historical discourses
Cataloging minerals, part 2: Re-imagining the catalog as a first step toward confronting extractionist legacies
Minerals are uniquely tied to colonialism, labor, and environment; however, those relationships are historically not included in mineral catalogs – an omission that limits curators ability to respond to mineral histories. This essay re-imagines mineral cataloging practices that could provide space for recontextualization efforts: restoring historical, cultural, and environmental context to minerals whose extractions systematically stripped away those relationships. We examine the roles of citations, linked data, provenience and provenance, non-standardized and 'unapproved' nomenclatures, positionality and collaboration, and the significant roles of labeling archival silences. We also examine the significant risks and practical limitations that arise in attempting to turn this colonial tool against itself.
