Fire as a Management tool for Oak Hickory Regeneration
The former pasture that is now Compartment 50 is a naturally regenerated mixture of hardwood and pine species located on the Domain of Sewanee: University of the South at the end of Breakfield Road. The site was reforested with loblolly pine in 1958 at a 6X8’ spacing, and these trees as well as naturally regenerated hardwood species were harvested from the site during the 2001 pine beetle infestation. The goal of this study was to inventory the site prior to a prescribed burn conducted on April 2, 2013 to better understand how the site responded to the 2001 harvest. Data was collected using 1/20th acre plots where number of trees and species were recorded, along with fuel loads and average percent cover in the understory. Pre-treatment inventory of the site indicated a mean of 4,800 seedlings per acre and 3,576 trees per acre. Long-term management goals at this site include a reduction in tree densities, encouragement of the growth of planted shortleaf pine and naturally regenerated oak; all with the use of prescribed fire and targeted thinnings.Dr. Ken Smit
Urban Farmer Perceptions of Agroecology and Worker Agency in Cuba
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the small island nation of Cuba has become famous for the prevalence of urban agroecology, which grew rapidly out of a harsh food shortage, economic crisis, and scarcity of agrochemicals. State institutions were and are critical in supporting this movement that began almost spontaneously out of necessity. However, there is little existing research on urban farmer perceptions of agroecology, and even less farmer-based research on the amount of control urban farm workers have over their plots. This study addresses these issues with 41 semi-structured interviews of urban farmers in Havana. Interview responses were then analyzed in order to identify concrete attitudes and ideas of farmers. The key findings of this study are that (i) urban farmers overwhelmingly understand the health and environmental hazards of agrochemicals and do not support their use in an urban setting and (ii) urban farmers do not perceive themselves as having a large amount of individual agency and control in their work.Biehl International Research Internship; Department of Environmental Studies, University of the Sout

Toward Liquid Crystalline Supramolecular Squares Based on PLatinum (II) Diimine Complexes
Bipyridine complexes of platinum(II) possess a host of interesting, and potentially useful optical and electronic properties. Conjugating the [bpyPt(II)Cl2] chromophore to b-branched aliphatic fragments results in a new class of liquid crystalline derivatives that embed the properties of this chromophore into a responsive fluid system. The resulting materials showed both ambient liquid crystallinity and novel phase dependent luminescence, encouraging us to explore other derivatives of the [bpyPt(II)] moiety. Specifically, we have begun to expand our efforts to multi-metallic systems such as the supramolecular metallosquares that can be formed by combining a fragment such as [bpyPt(II)] with diethynyl linkers. Our recent synthetic efforts toward this new class of liquid crystalline materials, as well as related model “corner” complexes will be presented.National Science Foundatio
