This thesis aims at investigating the role of five firm features namely; firm age (youngest and oldest age), firm size (smallest and largest size), firm trading nature (exporting and non-exporting), firm nature of business (financial and non-financial) and sectoral location of the firm in determining the macroeconomic exposure (i.e., exchange rate, treasury yield spread, oil prices, and market return) of firm stock returns volatility, risk-return trade-off, and asymmetric and leverage effect. This study employs three Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity Models such as (i) GARCH (1,1) model to determine the linkages between the macroeconomic factors and the firm stock returns volatility; (ii) GARCH in Mean model to capture the risk-return trade-off; and (iii) Exponential GARCH model to test the asymmetric and leverage effect at the firm level concerning the five firm features. The study spans from January 3, 2000, to March 31, 2022, and 608 firms listed on the New York Stock Exchange are examined. The results indicated the significant role of firm features. The following are the highlights of the results. First, the market return emerged as the leading factor affecting the firm stock returns volatility significantly, followed by treasury yield spread, oil prices, and exchange rate. Further, the impact of macroeconomic factors on firm stock returns volatility is heterogeneous depending on the firm features. Second, the positive risk-return relationship is dependent on the firm features. Third, asymmetric and leverage effect varies with respect to the firm features. Findings of this thesis are helpful for the (i) investors to achieve optimal portfolio diversification; (ii) the firm managers to improve their risk management techniques; and (iii) the government to devise effective policies. This study is limited to one developed financial market, hence, future studies can be extended to the other financial markets

The bank is a significant financial institution that mobilizes public funds, providing customers with safe custody of savings and finance. However, in 1991, Islamic banking operations in Somalia ceased operations for more than two decades due to the civil war. Additionally, the growth has been hindered at the beginning of the 21st century because the government and the Central Bank of Somalia lack proper regulations. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effects of awareness of customers, opportunities, and challenges on the growth of Somalia’s Islamic banks. It also used quantitative methods and sociological theory. In line with this research, 200 questionnaires were collected via convenience sampling. The data collected was analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 23. The findings of this study conclude some essential points about the reputation of Islamic banks among Somalians, their awareness level, and the shortcoming that hinders their growth in Somalia. It is found that most people have limited to no knowledge about the contracts and services provided by these Islamic financial institutions and do not know about Murabahah, Musharakah, Ijarah, and so on. In contrast, only a limited number of people have bank accounts. It was found that there are many opportunities for the growth of the Islamic banking industry in Somalia, as people feel safe using the services offered by Islamic banks. Besides, numerous challenges were recognized, such as the absence of a regulatory framework. This study will contribute to improving existing knowledge regarding the hurdles in the appropriate growth of Islamic banks of Somalia and the awareness and opportunities that help their development

    Get PDF
Educational change is a reality that affects teachers’ personal lives and emotions. Yet most research in educational change focused on teachers’ emotions from organizational perspective devoid of personal lived experiences. Therefore, this study aimed to understand teachers’ lives and emotions in a context of educational change in Malaysia. Specifically, it examined the teachers’ lived experiences, their emotions, and the emergence of their emotions in their lived experiences in a context of educational change. Symbolic interactionism was the underpinning theory used in this study, focusing on interaction of self and objects. Based on purposive sampling methods, fifteen secondary school teachers were involved as participants who provided the narratives of their teaching lived experiences. Data were collected through life history interviews using face to-face and email interviews and were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed that interaction of teachers’ self with different objects, such as social objects and abstract objects, allowed for different types of emotions to emerge in teachers’ lived experience and within educational change context. Students, as social object, were important in the teachers’ lived experience that they either changed or not changed their teaching purpose (abstract object) in order to accommodate students’ diverse needs. In addition, it was discovered that the teachers were adept emotion managers who managed their emotions which emerged using both intrinsic and extrinsic strategies. This study contributes to the understanding of the functions of teacher emotions from the sociological perspective, which assumes emotion as a process of meaning making, through the interaction of self and object, of the teachers’ lived experience in the context of educational change. Implications from this study highlights the needs for teacher emotions to be considered as source of information for better change planning in the future. Limitations are discussed and recommendations for future research are given

Social work has been recognized as both an academic discipline and a profession internationally. However, social work continues to struggle to attain its professional status in Malaysia. This study aims to analyse the professionalisation of social work in Malaysia from 1969 to 2010, as well as to identify the efforts of the Malaysian Association of Social Workers (MASW), the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (DSW) and tertiary social work education in advancing the profession. This research utilized qualitative method using semi-structured and face to face interviews with 12 past leaders of the MASW, DSW and tertiary social work education programmes as the primary source of data. In addition, annual reports and supporting documents were collected as secondary source of data. Thematic analysis was used to analyse both the interview transcripts and secondary data. The findings identified two stages emerged in the professionalisation of social work in Malaysia, namely the infancy stage (1969-1989) and the expansion of social work education and the drive for professionalism stage (1990-2010). Key features of social work as a profession have developed during the infancy stage. However, the professionalisation stalled in the 1980s. The idea of caring society and Vision 2020 stimulated the expansion of social work education after the 1990s, and the drive for professionalism received greater attention from the government post millennium, which encapsulated the second stage of professionalisation. Despite all these progresses, this study found that social work in Malaysia has yet to establish itself as a professional occupation. This study proposes for greater synergy between the MASW, DSW and social work education, and underlines the importance of legislation and policy in shaping the profession and its practices. This study contributes to the field of professionalisation research and serves a reference for comparative study of social work in the global contex

Classification of the effectiveness of ICT integration in teaching and learning using data mining based on AHP methods

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a medium that people rely on daily to receive information via a specific application. The Ministry of Education in Malaysia has widely integrated ICT into the education system since 1990s. However, ICT is still not fully implemented due to some obstacles such as lack of sufficient training, time, ICT resources and infrastructure. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to analyze and rank the factors that impede the integration of ICT in urban and rural secondary schools using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach, as well as to determine the significant difference between factors in urban and rural areas by using t-test analysis. In conjunction with the outputs, several predictive models are then developed to classify the students’ academic performance in urban and rural areas using Data Mining techniques. The respondents for this study are secondary school teachers in the Malaysian state of Kedah. For the first phase, 51 teachers were chosen to complete the questionnaire. A total of 238 teachers were chosen for the second phase. The hypothesis testing showed that there is no significant difference between the factors in both areas. The top three factors are workload (13.46%), lack of accessibility and network connection (13.25%), and lack of support assistance (12.09%). The result gained was used to develop several predictive models and the best model was selected for classifying the students’ academic performance. The Decision Tree (cross-validation) outperformed the other models with a misclassification rate of 32.98% (urban) and 16% (rural). The developed predictive model can be used by Ministry of Education or policymaker to plan national educational policies whilst implement a better strategy for educational development based on government policies and the Education Act

The importance of public participation in governmental decision-making and policy development has gained widespread acceptance and increasingly attracted the interest of academicians, researchers, and policymakers. However, the traditional public participatory method may have limitations that could limit its effectiveness in encouraging public participation. Therefore, the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in public participation platforms has been proposed as a way to overcome these limitations. This approach, known as e-participation, can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the public participation process. Nonetheless, there is still debate surrounding the extent of public participation in local governments through online platforms. The current study has revealed a scarcity of case-based evidence and comprehensive empirical evaluations of e-participation practices in Malaysia. Moreover, little is known about e-participation, especially within the context of local governments. The aim of this study is to evaluate the implementation of e-participation in local governments in Malaysia using a logic model, with reference to Alor Setar City Council as a case study. Qualitative techniques were employed to conduct semi-structured interviews involving the public and local authorities. The obtained data were analysed using ATLAS.ti, a computer-assisted software for qualitative data analysis. The findings show that the level of implementation of e-participation at the Alor Setar City Council was deemed fair, with opportunities for improvement. Despite adequate awareness among the public and facilities for e-participation, their experience in using the e-participation platform was significantly lacking. There are several challenges associated with the effective implementation of e-participation, including the lack of support and involvement from local authority staff, insufficient promotion of e-participation activities, as well as inadequate collaboration between local governments and the public. The lack of monitoring and evaluation of the e-participation system had also hindered its effective implementation. Based on the modified logic model, this study provides various recommendations for the successful implementation of e-participation
