With socio-economic growth in this era, the use of hazardous chemicals chlorine has increased proportionally with the increasing population and demand for potable water worldwide. Chlorine gas leakage frequently happens causing dispersion that poses life threat and can lead to many health problems among the people living near the potential source of leakage. This research aimed to assess the awareness of emergency response in the event of chlorine gas dispersion for trained residents living near the water treatment plant. A qualitative study was conducted at residences near the plant subjected to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Control of Industrial Major Accident Hazards) Regulation 1996. The sampling method employed in this study is purposive, targeting individuals who have participated in the Information to Public (ITP) program. Five interviews were conducted, each assessing six factors; demographic characteristics, hazard knowledge, attitudes to risk, previous emergency experience, exposure towards awareness degrees, and ability to respond. Demographic aims to identify the characteristics of the person being interviewed. Meanwhile hazard knowledge is to determine the basic awareness regarding the chlorine gas. Attitudes to risk is to understand the cognitive and interpretive of the interviewees. Previous experience of emergencies objective is to explore the feeling of people related emergency response. Besides, the exposure towards awareness degrees aims to discover what would they do to increase the awareness. Finally, ability to respond is test their basic preparedness of emergency response. The findings show that the majority of respondents demonstrated a positive awareness by indicating their knowledge towards emergency response of chlorine gas dispersion. It is essential to assess their awareness to prevent and mitigate the effects of major accidents involving chlorine which can cause harm to the near community. Large quantified surveys can be performed in the future to truly represent the population and reduce systematic sampling error

Safety is a serious matter that should not be taken lightly because it involves the soul and should be given priority at all times for every work performed. It is mostly felt in the military where Paratroopers are exposed sustained risk in their daily operations. This study was conducted to identify the level of safety behavior, to identify the influence of Work Safety Scale (WSS) factors on safety behavior, and to investigate whether supervisor/officer safety priority can moderate the influence of job safety perception towards safety behavior among Paratroopers in the Eight Battalion Para of Royal Ranger Regiment. Quantitative method using survey questionnaires were conducted among 599 Paratroopers in the rank groups of both Officers and Other Ranks. The finding of the study had proven that safety behaviors of the Paratroopers were influenced greatly by job safety, coworker safety, officer safety, and management safety practices held in the organisation. Besides, the findings of the study support the Situational Strength Theory that shows the negative association between job safety and safety behavior were significantly weaker among Paratroopers who were managed by immediate officers with high safety priority compared to those whose immediate officers reported low safety priority. Thus, enhancing officer safety priority should be explicitly targeted in safety programs and interventions to ensure that Paratroopers can be optimally healthy and safe. This study is perhaps provides a stepping stone for future theorizing and research into the roles of subordinates and immediate officers’ safety-related behaviors and attitudes in the WSS factors–safety behavior link

Perception towards Islamic ethics practices and Zakat in business : a study among online sellers

    Get PDF
Online business today has become a trend in society. This is because business conducted online brings many benefits compared to business conducted face-to-face. In online business, uncertainty, and the insecurity of customers to purchase the marketed goods is a high challenge where the customer only depends entirely on the product in the form of an image before reaching the customer. In an online business, the customer's trust is completely depended on the merchant because the marketed product only exists in the form of an image before reaching the customers. However, in this regard, there are some irresponsible traders by oppressing their customers by spreading false facts about the products offered just to make a profit. The increase of Muslim traders provides a great opportunity to develop the Muslim economy while contributing to the national income. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine Islamic ethical practices that influence online sellers while conducting business. The study also investigated the online seller’s perception of the zakat business. The qualitative methods by using interview techniques are carried out with the support of questionnaires to obtain information and their perceptions. The results of the study found that the average respondent applies Islamic ethical practices in their business, however, there is some unclear level of understanding about zakat in business. Therefore, in this research, I hoped that this study can contribute and open the eyes of many parties about the importance of applying Islamic business concepts in business and life as well as zakat on business which should be a guideline for Muslim traders

The issue of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) is not new. It brings various adverse effects such as social and health problems. The aim of this study is to explore the understanding and challenges in the approach towards the LGBT community, which falls under the Asnaf al-Riqab. The function of the Zakat Institutions in understanding this issue is important to the extent that the institutions can play a vital role in helping the recovery of this community. The study used a qualitative research approach in which data were collected through an in-depth interview with Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP) officer. Based on the findings, there are three main points to describe the issue of LGBT nowadays: the crisis of identity, psychology, and the change in human nature. It is also found that the assistance given for the recovery of LGBT is through Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) programs, MAIWP specific assistance scheme, and through support by the government. Zakat institutions and others may find these findings to be useful in terms of giving mental health support. However, the challenges include difficulty in understanding the community and identifying them because they come from a higher income group, as well as differences in opinion of the necessary law and human rights. This study also suggests some education and awareness efforts to protect them from exploitation and discriminatio

The effect of corporate governance on voluntary delisting in China: The moderating role of top management team demographic characteristics

    No full text
Limited literature investigates voluntary delisting issues in the context of China, even though China is the second-largest economy in the world. This study aims to investigate the influence of internal corporate governance(i.e., board size, board independence, CEO duality, institutional ownership, insider ownership) and external corporate governance (i.e., lead security trader, external auditor) on voluntary delisting. It also investigates the moderating effect of the top management team (TMT) demographic characteristics (i.e., TMT average age, TMT average education level, TMT political background) on the relationship between internal corporate governance and voluntary delisting. The study employed the Agency theory as the underpinning theory with two supporting theories: CBA theory and Upper Echelons theory. The data is collected from China’s New Third Board Market. It is an out-to-counter stock market that has had a large number of delisting firms recently. The sample includes 1045 delisted firms as a test group and 1388 remaining listed firms as the control group over the year from 2014 to 2019. Logistic regression and hierarchical regression analysis are used to achieve the research objectives. The findings show that board independence, institutional ownership, and insider ownership are significantly and negatively related to voluntary delisting. However, CEO duality, lead security trader, and external auditor are significantly and positively associated with voluntary delisting. Thus, good corporate governance could mitigate the likelihood of a firm voluntarily delisting. Furthermore, the results show that TMT demographic characteristics affect the relationship between internal corporate governance and voluntary delisting. Therefore, the contribution of this study includes expanding the application of the Upper Echelons theory in delisting literature, providing new evidence for the delisting empirical research, and offering suggestions for regulators of China’s capital market, investors, and the NTBM-listed firms’ management

Influence of behavioral, governance and investment factors on investment intention in renewable energy in Nigeria: the moderating effect of tax incentives

    No full text
Nigeria has been battling with insufficient electricity generation. Deploying renewable energy by stimulating private investment is among the options to address this challenge. However, it has been lacking in the country. Therefore, this study expands the theory of planned behavior by integrating governance and investment factors to understand the investment intention of conventional energy stakeholders towards renewable energy for electricity generation in Nigeria. Also, testing the moderating effect of tax incentives. The study deployed mixed method approach by collecting quantitative data using questionnaire and qualitative data from interviews. The quantitative data was analyzed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) while the qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The quantitative result reveal that attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control influenced investment intention. Governance factors: political stability, government effectiveness, regulatory quality and rule of law also influenced investment intention. Investment factors: perceived returns and tax incentives influenced investment intention while perceived risks has significant but negative impact. Furthermore, tax incentives moderated the relationships between subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, rule of law, perceived risks and returns and investment intention. The qualitative results give insights for why some of the variables specifically, voice and accountability, control of corruption and perceived risks are insignificant. It also highlights additional variables that could possibly influence investment intention. The study contributes to the literature by extending the theory of planned behavior in the context of renewable energy investment, while the methodological contribution centered on deployment of mixed method in the context. The policy implications require the development of a viable implementation strategy for the comprehensive renewable energy framework and policies to attract and maintain investors in the renewable energy sector. Practically, there is a need to deploy renewable energy for electricity generation to achieve the SDGs’ energy targets and climate goals

    Get PDF
In the past few years, the issue of e-waste has caught the attention of many due to its massive growth in volume. During the outbreak of Covid-19, more electronic devices such as laptops and printers were provided to employees so they could work remotely. Indirectly, this may cause the volume of e-waste generated to increase more than what has been expected. This study aims to address the issue of e-waste reporting in Malaysian public listed companies by examining the influence of board characteristics (size, independence, frequency of meetings, and gender diversity) and sustainability steering committees on the reporting of e-waste. E-waste has become a growing concern in Malaysia. There is a need for companies to be transparent in their reporting on e-waste management practices. Specifically, this study observed the extent and quality of e-waste disclosure. It also examined the level of e-waste disclosure between industries. Subsequently, this study also investigated if board characteristics and sustainability steering committee had any impact on e-waste disclosure. The sample consisted of all companies from Bursa Malaysia's main market. The findings indicated that the quality of disclosure appeared to be roughly in the middle of non-disclosure and general qualitative disclosure. According to this study, companies in technology and telecommunications sectors disclosed e-waste information more comprehensively and of higher quality than companies in other sectors. This study also revealed that board meeting frequency was the only board characteristic that significantly enhanced e-waste disclosure. In addition, there was a significant and positive relationship between the existence of a sustainability steering committee and e-waste disclosure. The findings of this study contribute to the aspirations in achieving environmental sustainability and sustainable development goals

Counterfeiting is a prevalent phenomenon in the global market and has become a significant concern worldwide. This problem affects many industries and poses a significant threat to consumers' health and safety, damaging businesses' reputations and harming the economy. Despite efforts to combat the problem, the growth of counterfeit trade is still rampant. The purpose of this study is to examine consumer attitudes towards counterfeit product. This research focuses on counterfeit fashion and accessories, which topped the counterfeited product ranking worldwide. Guided by the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), the objective of this research was to investigate the significance of the relationship between religiosity, ethical concern, novelty seeking, purchase intention, and the mediating effects of attitude towards counterfeit products. This study involved 250 respondents from the state of Terengganu, Malaysia, and was analyzed using SPSS 25 and PROCESS. A total of 10 hypotheses were developed, and two were not supported. The results showed that ethical concern has a significant negative relationship with purchase intention, and novelty seeking has a significant positive relationship with purchase intention. Besides, ethical concern has a significant negative relationship with attitude towards counterfeit products, and novelty seeking has a significant positive relationship with attitude towards counterfeit products. However, the religiosity relationship with purchase intention and attitudes towards counterfeit products are rejected as they show a significant positive relationship. Attitude toward counterfeit products was found to be significant as a predictor of purchase intention and as a mediator between all the independent variables on intention to purchase counterfeit products. The study answered all the research questions and fulfilled its objectives, thus supporting the idea of TRA on consumer purchase intention towards counterfeit products
