    Get PDF
The recent Covid-19 pandemic has introduced unprecedented changes in the higher education institute (HEI) sector, including a full transition to online teaching and learning (OTL), and changes in working environment and arrangement of the academicians. In midst of the changes, the question of whether these changes would influence employee engagement (EE) among academic staff arises. Underpinned by Kahn’s theory of engagement, this study aimed to study the influence of Big Five personality (BFP), perceived organizational support (POS), and job satisfaction (JS) on employee engagement level of academic staff. A total of 296 academic staff from two universities in the northern region of Malaysia had participated in the online questionnaire consisted of 9-item Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9), 28-item adapted version of Big Five Inventory-44 (BFI-44), 8-item shortened version of perceived organizational support (SPOS) survey and 7-item general satisfaction measure. The data was run through SmartPLS 3.0 and was analyzed by bootstrapping analysis utilizing the partial least square-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method to test the hypotheses. The results showed that, out of the five BFP domains, only extraversion and neurotic personalities significantly influence EE level, while conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness to experience do not significantly influences EE. The other two independent variables, POS and JS, were also found to influence EE significantly. Out of all the independent variables, in terms of their relationship with EE, only conscientiousness and openness to experience personalities were found to demonstrate different results compared to most findings in past similar studies conducted pre-pandemic. Finally, this study also discusses implication for management level and suggested some recommendations for future studies

Lately, the issue of unemployment is much debated and received attention in most countries including countries in ASEAN. It is one of the key factors that is considered critical for the growth and economic recession of a country. Most earlier researchers conducted a large number of studies on unemployment concerns, but they did not place a high priority on conceptual analysis and empirical evidence. They only focus on economic elements such as inflation, gross domestic product (GDP), and capital formation as an independent variable. Therefore, this study combines economic elements such as inflation, gross domestic product (GDP), and capital formation and individual factors namely employability skills and English proficiency towards unemployment especially during the Covid-19 Pandemic crisis among ASEAN countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. This study uses secondary data or panel data from three major platforms namely the World Bank, World Economic Indicators and Macro Trends covering 10 ASEAN member states from the period of 2000 to 2019. This study uses five major analysis techniques namely Descriptive Analysis, Correlation Analysis, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) Panel Regression, Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL), and Panel Cointegration. There are two theoretical foundations for this study which is the theory of Phillips curve and the Okun’s law. Secondary data is used to meet the objectives of the study. According to the findings, inflation and GDP have negative correlations with unemployment; as unemployment rises, inflation and GDP fall, and vice versa. In addition, GDP and inflation are found to have significant value below 0.05 or 5%. As a consequence, the researcher is sure that the findings are consistent with all past research studies. This research study will give ideas and knowledge, particularly to ASEAN member nations, on current challenges, and urgent action in terms of fiscal and monetary policy may be made to improve the ASEAN member countries' economies

    Get PDF
The government of Malaysia has intended to transform Malaysia into a digital era by 2020, as stated in the Financial Blueprint 2011. Growth in electronic payments and mobile banking are significantly increasing, but private researchers have mentioned that Malaysia is not ready to meet this goal by 2020 due to a lack of security and data privacy. The objective of this paper is to determine the factors influencing readiness level of Malaysia in adopting digital payments and going cashless. Key variables like usage, awareness, trend analysis and descriptive comparison between cash and cashless economy are being used as core parameters in this study. Regression analysis was conducted to generate the outcomes. The results indicated that Malaysia was 20% cashless in 2018. Hence, the country is still far from meeting its aim of wanting to be operating in full cashless mode by 2020. It has been deduced that Malaysia may potentially need an estimated amount of 10 years or more to be able to operate fully in cashless mode and completely utilise digital payments as routine paying methods. Furthermore, sufficient strategic moves and action plans to boost digital payments and awareness in assisting transformation towards digitalisation are required in Malaysia. Also, involvement from all parties, including profitable and non-profitable organisations from every economic sector will assist towards realising this digital transformation

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the effect of macroeconomic indicators namely towards the Malaysian government bond yield for a period from year 2008 until 2018. Design/Methodology/Approach – This study used static panel regression which includes pooled Ordinary Least Square (OLS) model to analyse the effect of five macroeconomic indicators namely, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), Consumer Price Index (CPI), Government Debt (GD), Short-Term Interest Rate (STIR) and Exchange Rate (FX) on Malaysian government bond yield. Findings – The finding supports the expected hypotheses that FX and GD are significant to explain Malaysia government bond yield. However, FDI, CPI and STIR have weak and no influences on government bond yield respectively which contradicted from the other researchers’ finding. Therefore, to ensure there are no theoretical problem occur, the diagnostic checking then is carried out to latent the unearth econometrics defect. Originality/value – This is an original study based on compilation of data from secondary sources. The findings will provide invaluable information on the determining the factors that may contribute to the movement in bond yield to financial regulatory policymakers, participation in bond market, institutional players and researchers. Further future study on bond market should incorporate the Islamic and conventional types of bonds as well as government and corporate bonds to understand the behaviour of different types of bond. In addition, future research should also consider other factors that could affect bond yield spread such as money supply. Extending this study to other market and incorporate other macroeconomic variablesis worth pursuing for additional literature

The successful adoption of new technologies helps governments achieve efficiency in their implementation and delivery of public services to the citizens. As one of the MSC Malaysia Flagship Applications, the Online Tax System or e-filing has gained its popularity since it was launched in 2006. However, the current trend shows that the percentage of taxpayers using e-filing has been decreasing in the past 5 years. Earlier empirical research on e-filing usage examined the factors that affect the behavioral intention to use e-filing, not the actual behavior. The objective of this research was to fill the gap by studying the causes that affect the continuous intention to use the e-filing system. The quantitative research was applied in this study, and individual taxpayers in Malaysia were selected. The integrated model of technology acceptance of the De Lone & McLean IS Success Model, the Technology Acceptance Model, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and a structured questionnaire survey were used to collect data from the respondents. The results of this research were obtained via convenience sampling of 406 respondents. The Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied as the statistical technique and analysis of data was conducted using the Smart PLS3. The outcomes are in line with the technology acceptance theories that recommend that system quality, information quality, trust, technology knowledge and attitude factors were precarious to the determinants of the continuous intention to use e-filing system. The results will provide direction for government organizations that are involved with the delivery of e-services, to be aware of the factors that contribute towards the future maintenance of the e-government services. In addition, the results have significant implications for the system designers and policy-makers to identify the key quality criteria for the e-filing website that are valued by citizens and making the service successful

A corporate name is an identity and a medium of communication between the public and a company. It is also likely that corporate name change serves as a signal to convey favourable information about the management's strategy on the company's future direction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of corporate name change announcements on the Malaysian stock market price. The study employs Market Model Event Study methodology. The sample period taken for the study is January 2015 to August 2021. A sample of 65 companies listed in Bursa Malaysia is selected as clean data to analyse the market's reaction to the announcements. An event window 120 days was identified as the window before the event date. At the same time, an event window of 60 days was identified after the event. The event date (t=0) refers to the first available official announcement available on the Bursa Malaysia website regarding the name change made by the company. The findings of this study indicate that corporate name changes have no impact on shareholder wealth. Investors in Malaysia are generally selective in accepting news on the corporate name change. It seems like only those perceived to benefit them in the future are accepted enthusiastically

This study seeks to investigate the global determinants of Malaysia government bond yield using monthly data from 2008 to 2019. This study employs the Johansen cointegration test and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) to test the existence of long-run and short-run equilibrium within Malaysia government bond yield using the VIX index as a proxy for investor sentiment, USDMYR representing Malaysia currency, oil price and gold price. The results of the study suggest that investor sentiment and gold price have significant relationships with the Malaysia government bond yield in the long run while oil price, currency, investor sentiment and gold price have a short-run relationship with Malaysia government bond. However, only VIX index and oil price granger casual Malaysia government bond yield in the short run. This research will help explain the domestic bond market yield movement using more frequent daily data point like VIX index, currency, oil price and gold price compared to macroeconomic data like GDP or other Malaysia’s fiscal data which are only available on a monthly or quarterly basis. This research will also add to the literature study on the determinants of the Malaysia Government bond which allow regulators to design policies in improving the efficiency of the bond market in Malaysi

    Get PDF
A Product Disclosure Sheet (PDS) is an important document that contains key information on financial products provided by Islamic banks to facilitate customers to compare products and make informed decisions. However, the PDS is less effective due poor quality with incomplete disclosure. In fact, empirical studies on PDS quality are limited. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of information quality and resource quality on the PDS quality of Islamic banks in Malaysia. Specifically, the objectives of the study were to examine the influence of information quality and resource quality on PDS quality, and the moderating effect of information technology on that relationship. This study used quantitative methods and was based on information asymmetry and task-technology fit theories. A total of 754 questionnaires were collected via the convenience sampling technique. Data was analysed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling technique. The findings reveal that information quality (t=12.384, p=0.000) and resource quality (t=5.068, p=0.000) have significantly positive relationships with PDS quality. However, information technology does not moderate the relationship between information quality (t=1.869, p=0.073) and resource quality (t=1.807, p=0.060) and PDS quality. This study contributes to the body of knowledge on PDS quality and aspects of Islamic finance principles in order to prevent ambiguity (gharar). In terms of practical contributions, this study recommends reform practices for Islamic banks to improve the preparation and presentation of quality PDS to customers. It also contributes guidance to Bank Negara Malaysia as a policy-maker to leverage these findings to improve the existing policies, guidelines, and practices of providing quality PDS and conducting audits and supervision regularly to enhance the quality of PDS
