Chemical incidents/accidents and vulnerabilities can cause devastating effects and this study examined the impact in chemical storage warehouses. The objective of this study was to systematically apprehend the risk factors by identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risk to determine a conducive, safe, and confident working environment. Despite the negative impact of chemicals, and the increase of accident data in reports of DOSH, BOMBA and SOCSO, the actual numbers of incidents/accidents, health, and spillage statistics contributed by chemical storage warehouses are unclear. This study investigated this occurrence and simultaneously examined to identify how chemical vulnerabilities are managed, and the effectiveness of risk models employed since there is scarce academic research that has explored this issue. The qualitative methodology employing the phenomenology approach was engaged, utilising face- toface interviews as the major data collection method. Twelve participants from chemical warehouses (CW) and manufacturers with chemical storage (MCS) in the northern region states of Malaysia were selected employing purposive sampling and the Snow Balling technique. The findings reveal that CW and MCS contributions are minimal and do not contribute significantly towards the incidents/accidents volume as reported. The level of awareness and alertness towards chemical vulnerabilities examined also suggest a high level. Apparently, 75% of organizations employ 11 different effective risk models in managing risk factor, and 8 new models employed were identified. The overall indication is that the MCS sector is intact and in comparison, to the CW sector which is more vulnerable with 83% accidents recorded, and 43% organizations in the CW sector engage in less effective methods. The study recommends more training, collaborations, knowledge- sharing, and risk model adoption to move forward

    Get PDF
Given the telecommunication industry's increasing competitiveness and customer demand for lower cost and higher quality service, telecommunication companies must increase operational efficiency in order for their supply chain management to function optimally. In response to the demand for knowledge, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between supply chain management practice and supply chain performance, as well as whether or not this relationship is mediated by logistical integration. The present study was conducted among 361 respondents from 21 Malaysian telecommunication firms in Malaysia by applying a structural equation modeling with SmartPLS. Findings revealed that from the three factors of supply chain management, customer relationship and information-sharing associated with supply chain performance, the relationship between strategic supplier partnership and supply chain performance was not supported. Logistics integration mediated the relationship between information- sharing and supply chain performance but failed to mediate the effect of the logistics integration relationship in the relationship between strategic supplier partnership and supply chain performance. The study confirmed that applying the underpinning theory's Resource-Based View could be a promising framework for improving supply chain performance in the telecommunications industry. The study established that by sharing information with suppliers and creating customer relationships, supply chain performance may be improved through logistics integration. The study has implications for practitioners in the decision-making process of SCM procedures, particularly in the telecommunications industry

Animals and products traceability are the most important tools in food safety and disease management. Nowadays people’s concerns about food safety are extremely high and food security has become the main national agenda. Disease in animals and contaminated animals’ products are losses which become a threat to food safety. As a mature and rapidly growth industry, poultry traceability is important for farm production and trade purposes as well as disease outbreak management, public health and sustainable farming with concern on impact towards environment. In this industry, traceability elements of animals’ identification, premise registration and movements should be a part of daily husbandry practice. This study was conducted to evaluate the level of poultry farmers knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of traceability in Kedah. In a cross-sectional survey, a total of 62 farmers from different management backgrounds completed a questionnaire which aimed to evaluate their KAP domains of traceability. The results showed that 43.5% of poultry farmers have a high satisfactory knowledge of traceability elements and the national traceability system that has been introduced. Although the level of knowledge is moderate, the number of good attitude farmers to be compliant with traceability is high (71%) with 46.7% of population practicing good traceability. Attitude variables were also found to have a relationship towards best practices. Therefore, results from KAP study of poultry farmers reveal the level of knowledge, attitude and practice on upstream players of supply chain, suggesting the need of traceability training and education on systematic traceability system to ensure the national food safety and food security. The authority should strengthen the implementation of national traceability system for all the players involved along the food chain including at farm level for the benefits of local consumption as well as international trade in sustainable approach

    Get PDF
Solar energy is one of the renewable energies, and it is a very important energy as it can replace fossil fuels to reduce environmental pollution. Resource utilization efficiency is increasingly critical. This has impacted the environment and caused the reduction of existing energy resources. Therefore, solar energy is an alternative energy that can replace other non-renewable energy especially electricity because the use of electric power in Malaysia is experiencing a considerable increase in every year so that the available energy cannot accommodate daily use. The objective of this study is to measure the level of public acceptance and awareness of the use of solar energy as one of the energies to be used in Malaysia. The primary data was used and obtained through the circulation of questionnaires from 200 respondents in Alor Star, Kedah. The logit model was applied in analyzing data received from the questionnaires. The results show that factors such as household income and level of education are significant to the acceptance and awareness of the use of solar energy as individuals with high household income and high levels of education tend to accept solar energy consumption. In conclusion, solar energy is positively associated with public acceptance against the use of solar energy. When the use of solar energy as one of the materials to generate electricity increases, the general acceptance of solar energy use increases. This study will benefit the government to create a new policy that encourages all communities to use solar energy as one of the energies that can replace electricity in the future

    Get PDF
Problem Statement: Mobile wallet was introduced in Malaysia back in 2004 however it remains silent and unnoticed by bank customers’ and Malaysians. It was reintroduced in 2014, but the engagement is still low as users’ knowledge towards the use of digital is low and it led to less confidence in using digital payment through mobile wallet as well as electronic payment. In the effort of moving forward toward a cashless society by encouraging Malaysians to use mobile wallet, it is crucial to investigate elements that influence the intention to adopt mobile wallet in Malaysia’s Klang Valley. Methodology: Theory of Reason Action (TRA), Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) have been used to investigate the intention to adopt mobile wallet. There were 330 questionnaires received from the respondents however only 324 questionnaires being used as 6 questionnaires were eliminated from analysis due to incomplete questionnaire and cannot be modified by respondents after submission. Data collected from the questionnaires were analysed using Descriptive Analysis, Reliability Test and Inferential Analysis. Pearson’s Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression are the common methodologies of inferential analysis. Findings: There is no question being removed from the questionnaire as all variables met the Cronbach’s Alpha threshold. Besides, Pearson’s Correlation result proved that all independent variables have a positive moderate relationship with dependent variable. However, only perceived usefulness and perceived risk have the significant relationship towards the intention to adopt mobile wallet in Malaysia based on the Multiple Linear Regression analysis. Implication: The government, financial institution, and Fintech players should launch various programmes and/or campaigns to increase consumers’ awareness on mobile wallet. The parties should not overlook this as an opportunity to better understand what consumers need and want from this research in order to improve the market’s adoption of mobile wallets. In addition, it is crucial for retailers to have a good knowledge in using contactless payment terminal to cater the needs of customers who are compatible. Future researchers are encouraged to use this research as a reference to further understand consumers’ behavior in adopting mobile wallet in Malaysia

The Impact Of Corruption, Country Governance Indicators And Loan Portfolio Concentration On Nonperforming Loans Of Three Selected South Asian Countries

    No full text
The 2008 global financial crisis (GFC) has triggered a rise in nonperforming loans (NPLs) of banks around the globe, including the South Asian region. The significant increase in NPLs is worrying as it may undermine banks’ ability to grant credit and support the economic recovery of a country. The increasing trend of NPL rates and limited studies in related literature assessing NPLs in the South Asian region have motivated this study, which examines the external and internal factors that may influence the NPLs. Specifically, this study investigates the impact of control of corruption (COC), country governance (CG), and loan portfolio concentration (LPC) on nonperforming loans (NPLs) in three selected South Asian countries (Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh) for the period 2000-2017. Employing Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) dynamic panel data analysis on a sample of 81 conventional banks, the result reveals that COC has a significant and negative association with NPLs, indicating that weak control of corruption would lead to an increase in NPLs in the sample countries. As for CG, the results indicate a negative and significant relationship, suggesting that better country governance would reduce the NPLs. Using Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI) for LPC, the results also show a significant negative relationship. This implies that an increase in loan portfolio concentration would decrease banks’ NPLs due to better monitoring efficiency and proper screening of loan applications. These findings provide insights to the policymakers in making strategic decisions regarding NPLs with regards to control of corruption, country governance, and loan portfolio concentration indicators

The effect of board equity ownership towards the relationships between corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and company’s performance of oil palm companies in Indonesia

    Get PDF
For the last few decades, the Indonesian Oil Palm industry has contributed to economic development by reflecting on the percentage contribution to the Gross Domestic Product. However, most of those companies had a history of poor financial performance. Poor performance has been linked to inefficient corporate governance mechanisms, corporate social responsibility, and board equity ownership. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effects of corporate governance mechanisms, corporate social responsibility, and the moderation effect of board ownership equity between the specified linkages. A quantitative research design approach was chosen, with a questionnaire developed for primary data collection via a survey of 281 Indonesian oil palm companies’ board of directors from three regions using the stratified random sampling technique. The partial least square regression was applied to analyze the relationship between the variables. The findings show that the dimension of corporate governance, such as independent director, female director, and board process, has significant positive effects on company performance. Likewise, environmental responsibility and community responsibility as dimensions of corporate social responsibility significantly positively affect company performance. Based on the results of the moderation effects, board ownership equity strengthens the relationship between corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, and company performance. The findings have several implications for the company’s owner, including raising awareness among family businesses about the importance of an independent director as a board member, re-evaluating the size of the board, expanding the list of corporate social responsibility activities that are tax-deductible, creating a solid risk management policy, and encouraging companies to allow board members to have at least 5% of the total company share, as recommended in the Law No. 40 of 2007 on the Regulation of Limited Liability Companies
