Understanding Artful Behavior as a Human Proclivity: Clues from a Pre-Kindergarten Classroom
Get PDFConcurrent to the present reduction of arts education in mainstream American schools, many evolutionary-minded scholars are asserting that artistic behavior contributes significantly to cognition, has been advantageous for our survival, and satisfies psychological needs that are biologically embedded. Supported by long-term and wide-spread art making among the human species and the spontaneous artful behaviors of children, this cross-disciplinary study explores the possibility that artful behaviors represent an inherent part of human nature. Based on an ethological understanding of art (that is, as a behavior rather than an object), this research uses an interpretivist lens and phenomenological design with the ultimate goal of exploring how such proclivities might inform educational policy and practice. Data collection methods include a combination of observation, participant observation, and teacher interviews in a state-funded pre-kindergarten classroom

The balance of strong business practices and community support created a thriving Buford, even at the height of the Great Depression

Experiences of Collective Trauma and Political Activism: A Study of Women 'Agents of Memory' in Post-Soviet Lithuania
Get PDFThis is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in Journal of Baltic Studies, 2010, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/01629778.2010.498191.The article presents an examination into the role of women as loci of social memory regarding historical trauma in post-Communist Lithuania. Introductory comments are given discussing the social interconnectedness of gender, meta-narrative and nationalism within Balkan states such as Lithuania. Case examples are listed of personal accounts of women experiencing deportation and politically resisting the actions in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Details are given analyzing both the circumstances of the accounts as well as the social-historical role the women played within them
