Grizzly Shelves: Campus-Sourced Collection Development (Georgia Libraries Conference, October 6, 2023)
Presentation at Georgia Libraries Conference, October 6, 2023.Presentation by Amy Eklund (Head of Resource Management, Daniel J. Kaufman Library) at Georgia Libraries Conference, October 6, 2023. Describes a faculty and student-driven collection development initiative, an effort to revitalize engagement with library collections. In fall 2022, Georgia Gwinnett College’s Kaufman Library implemented the Grizzly Shelves collection of print and electronic titles selected for students by GGC faculty and by Registered Student Organizations’ leadership. Modeling similar initiatives at Arizona State University and Southeast Missouri State University, the presenter solicited lists from each college department and registered student organizations of their “top” books and videos, emphasizing the selection of titles that “students need to see and use when they walk out of classrooms and into the library” and that “will encourage marginalized and at-risk students to engage in learning”. The goals of the collection include encouraging all students to engage in learning and supplemental reading, improving equity in education through relevant, engaging, and inclusive collections centered on students’ needs, and revitalizing use of print and electronic collections. The project’s phases and outcomes were examined, and the presenter shared successes, challenges, and future goals
