Social and Emotional Effects of Distance Learning on Elementary School Students During and After COVID-19
Currently, there is a major shift in the modality of instructions as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, it has affected the way education is viewed and the relationship between schooling and the lifestyle of the students. By reflecting on the last couple of years since COVID-19 to the present, many students are still hindered due to the effects of the world going around them, starting from school lockdown to the return of face-to-face instructions. This senior capstone examines the social and emotional effects of distance learning on elementary school students through the use of a literature review, class observations of first grades through fifth grades, and interviews with six teachers in two school districts. The result findings indicate that students found it hard to adapt to the modality of distance learning due to their disconnection from their peers and teachers and back again to in-person instructions
Super STEM Women: Empowering Women to Seek Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Fields
The focus issue addressed in this Capstone Project is improving women in STEMs experience in higher education. This is important because improving women in STEMs experience will lead to more women in the male dominated STEM fields. An argument is made that it is important to provide more women in STEM fields for better representation in order to encourage young girls to pursue higher education in STEM. The primary stakeholder perspectives chosen were women who are currently majoring in STEM at a four year University because they have direct experience being in STEM classes. Three action options emerged from an analysis of the data and explored as ways to address the issue presented. Mandating educators and teachers assistants to complete gender and racial bias awareness training is argued to be the most effective way to achieve the goal of improving women in STEMs experience in higher education to increase the amount of women in STEM fields in the future
Development of the Ames Global Hyperspectral Synthetic Data Set: Surface Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function
This study introduces the Ames Global Hyperspectral Synthetic Data set (AGHSD), in particular the surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) product, to support the NASA Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) mission development. The data set is generated based on the corresponding multispectral BRDF products from NASA\u27s MODIS satellite sensor. Based on theories of radiative transfer in vegetation canopies, we derive a simple but robust relationship that indicates that the hyperspectral surface BRDF can be accurately approximated as a weighted sum of the soil surface reflectance, the leaf single albedo, and the canopy scattering coefficient, where the weights or coefficients are spectrally invariant and thus readily estimated from the multispectral MODIS products. We validate the algorithm with simulations by a Monte Carlo Ray Tracing model and find the results highly consistent with the theoretic derivation. Using reflectance spectra of soil and vegetation derived from existing spectral libraries, we apply the algorithm to generate the AGHSD BRDF product at 1 km and 8-day resolutions for the year of 2019. The data set is biogeochemically and biogeophysically coherent and consistent, and serves the goal to support the SBG community in developing sciences and applications for the future global imaging spectroscopy mission
Assessing the Carmel River’s Biotic Conditions After River Reroute and Dam Removal Using the California Stream Condition Index
Dam removals are becoming necessary as the costs of maintenance, safety, and environmental concerns persist. However, understanding how a river responds ecologically to dam removal in places like California is understudied. In 2015, the San Clemente Dam was removed from the Carmel River, California. The dam removal project included permanently rerouting the Carmel River to prevent most of the accumulated sediment from flowing downstream. We quantified the changes in biotic conditions using the California Stream Condition Index in 2018 and 2022. We found that the condition of the Carmel River directly downstream of the former San Clemente Dam remained relatively stable over the study period, whereas conditions directly upstream in the reroute channel were more impaired. This study provides insight into how a river can change ecologically after dam removal using a unique sediment management technique in the central coast region of California
Fall Collection Drive for Homeless Individuals in Monterey County
Monterey County has a high rate of homeless individuals. CSUMB Community Health Engagement (CHE) in Salinas, CA, provides various services and resources to homeless individuals to help meet their basic needs. A collection drive was a resourceful project implemented to allocate items to be donated to homeless individuals during CHE\u27s outreach efforts through different encampments. The intern\u27s implementation methods used various methods to spread the word about the event, including creating a flyer, using media, and networking. The expected outcome was to have people donate various items to give back to homeless individuals during CHE\u27s outreach efforts or tabling events. The donation drive had a small turnout but was still successful, as more than thirty items were donated to help homeless individuals meet their basic needs. The agency\u27s continued outreach efforts will continue to be an essential factor in providing homeless individuals with services and resources in the future
Addressing Monterey County Cold Cases Through Volunteerism
The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office recently implemented a cold case task force in 2020 to address the 600 unsolved homicides and 150 missing persons cases within Monterey County. This initiative is made up of countywide resources and various law enforcement agencies to bring justice to the families of Monterey county impacted by local cold cases. Violent crimes, especially those that remain unsolved, threaten the stability of wellbeing and health in communities, leading to larger public health issues. Employment mobility within the criminal justice system, lack of funding for dedicated cold case personnel, insufficient investigative efforts, and institutional biases all amount to large groves of cases going cold. Volunteering with the cold case task force illuminated the agency\u27s continuous need for local volunteers to sort through DNA hit alerts from CHOP and begin preliminary investigative work. Within the CHOP DNA bank, over 200 DNA hits were addressed and further organized for task force investigators. Addressing those hits did not yet yield a formal investigation as the task force is working through other cases, but it is recommended that this agency continue recruiting a steady stream of volunteers for this project. As this is not a locally funded endeavor, the achieved federal grants do not accommodate financial compensation. Focusing on bringing on volunteers from college campuses, the criminal justice field, and different career paths provides a reinvigorated perspective in the hopes of closing every cold violent crime case in the county
Tech Support Workshops for Seniors: Bridging the Digital Divide
Unequal access to technology for seniors makes already-existing inequalities worse by preventing seniors from taking advantage of opportunities. A key element of Loaves, Fishes & Computers program is the digital literacy department, which assists seniors in overcoming any technological barriers. Seniors can get one-on-one help with any questions they may have about any technology device they possess. Additionally, they collaborate with other organizations to offer tools that might support the well-being of elders. For example, low-cost wifi resources. By offering workshops tailored to the needs of seniors, my project aims to contribute to ending the digital divide. I researched various subjects that would be beneficial and interesting. Since artificial intelligence is still relatively new, we created a presentation on it. The purpose of this workshop was to provide knowledge that participants could use to overcome any challenges and improve their daily lives. It is recommended that the organization keeps developing workshops that assist with everyday problems
Life Review Workbook
The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) & Hospice is a not for profit organization that provides a wide range of home health care services in the Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz and South Santa Clara counties. VNA & Hospice is a specialized sort of care for people facing a terminal disease, their families, and caregivers. VNA Volunteers, who volunteer their time to help others, are an important part of the agency\u27s staff. Caregiver burnout is often the result of devoting considerable time and energy when caring for a loved one that is in hospice, and not allowing oneself to rest. The purpose of this project is to provide hospice patient’s, caregivers, and families a life review workbook. The intern was responsible for creating the life review workbook. The workbooks are done in both English and Spanish and available in a physical copy form for families. VNA & Hospice should utilize the life review workbook for current and future patient families
Habitat-Mediated Efficacy of 360 Degree Diver-Operated Video For Quantitative Surveys of California Reef Fishes
Temperate rocky reefs feature a mosaic of complex macrohabitat features which host a variety of demersal fish species. Giant kelp forests add considerable vertical structure to rocky reefs, including macrohabitats extending from the reef to the upper water column. Much of what we know about temperate communities derives from shallow SCUBA surveys in which divers record observations using underwater visual census (UVC) techniques. Increasingly, these communities are being studied with video techniques first utilized in deeper water. While UVC provides immediate data on fish communities and requires no additional technology either for data collection or post-processing, imagery captures the fine-scale associations between fish specific habitat features that elude UVC techniques. While traditional video cameras constrain the field of view available to a UVC diver, 360˚ cameras record everything in all directions, eliminating the need to selectively survey one direction underwater. However, questions remain as to how data derived from 360˚ video transects compare to the more well-established UVC transects, particularly in complex environments. My primary research objective was to examine the trade-offs associated with 360˚ video and UVC when quantifying attributes of the demersal fish community across multiple sites and macrohabitat types. I performed SCUBA dives at four sites around the Monterey Peninsula in central California. Pairing UVC and 360˚ video, I recorded fish counts along 30 meter demersal transects. Richness, diversity, abundance, and density of fishes from UVC and 360˚ video were compared statistically with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Results indicate that within fish-habitat guilds, counts of species were similar between methods at all macrohabitats and at most sites. 360˚ video and UVC produced similar results with respect to species richness and diversity. At every scale, UVC density was always significantly greater than 360˚ video density. Count per meter independent of volume was greater when measured from 360˚ video for all fish combined, but this result was less clear when fish were separated into habitat guilds. Both methods were plotted similarly and revealed comparable site-specific trends in community structure when ordinated via nMDS. These results suggest that despite higher research costs and some data caveats, 360˚ video transects can be incorporated into temperate subtidal reef monitoring without compromising data quality. 360˚ video techniques can supplement traditional survey methods within nearshore environments to monitor shallow marine protected areas and fisheries resources
Benefits of Parental Involvement in Their Kindergartners\u27s Education
The purpose of this senior capstone research project is to examine the benefits of parental involvement in kindergarten students’ education. Parental involvement is a big part of a student\u27s educational performance. There are many reasons why parents cannot always be as involved or participate in their children’s education. However, there are different ways that teachers and school officials could involve parents. Through the use of a literature review, teacher interview, paraeducator interview, intervention teacher survey, anonymous parental involvement survey, and personal experience in South Monterey County, the results indicated that there are several factors that prevented parent involvement in their kindergarten students’ education included poverty, language barrier, and their work schedule conflict that attributed to the low parental involvement in school
